NY chicken lover!!!!

Rancher, I'd love some of your chicks, I could use about 4.
Ginny, still thinking of Buckeyes, if you will have extra.

My thoughts on having a flock is to add some each year so there are always young hens that will lay. But I may have to eventually plan for a retirement home...I mean for the older hens, not me, of course...

And on the subject of sinus infections, they seem to be related to irritations, or allergies, and those sensitivities can change during the course of ones life. For instance I had my first sinus infection in my 30s, and went to my dentist because of the pain. Twenty years later I decided to get allergy testing done and found lots of low grade allergies. Three years later, not getting sinus infections, all other symptoms are better...and two of my allergies were dust and feathers...but the myth growing up was that I was the one with no allergies. Go figure. So much changes in the body during pregnancies, responses to irritants can be one. So listen to your body, and it seems that as I get older, it has more complaints, but is still functional.

So off to spinning, Pilates and outdoor work. Have a great day everyone!

Oh, yes, I do remember that now that you mention it! Thanks. :)

I'm still considering a morph of all my ideas, haha -- that is leaving part of the ceiling open for good ventilation, but put a smaller piece of chicken wire across the section I'm leaving open to prevent the girls from roosting and making a mess in the rafters. I figure a smaller piece of chicken wire expanse would be easier to keep clean of webs and such. We'll see what my idea du jour is next! All ideas welcome!

I made some coop progress today. I need to stop at Home Depot tomorrow and pick up some L brackets to finish up the divider wall. Then it's figuring out where I want food/water nest boxes and roosts. THEN I can work on the run! I wanted to get the coop finished so I can at least move the big ones outside in the next few weeks.

Breella, sounds like you and I are in a similar crunch to get the job done! We even had matching colds this week. Hope yours is better. Only difference is, aside from your being much younger, I'm sure (!!) is that you've got your birds already, and I'm still chickenless .... well, sort of.... Rancher and Marquisella are being good enough to hold my pullets. (

I'm getting there ... thanks for your patience!)

Yeah, I had planned to wait, but they had this adorable bantam cochin and bantam silkie-- and that stupid six chicks law so I went all in.

Morning all ,

I think I need to clarify my earlier comments.

The impulse buying comment had to do with being in TSC and CM which I visit often. I saw folks buying chicks with no where to keep them YET. The "oh there so cute" types and "Please they're only $$$".

I don't deny my concern for the welfare of those poor chicks or any chickens. They are cheap to buy and then like puppies they grow up. I have friends who have voiced concerns come vacation time and who will care for them.

My other comments were personal and not meant or directed to anyone. Folks here are my friends and they're advice has been helpful many times. My personal concern is that I do not become a "collector" like folks do with cats. We've all seen and heard the horror stories. Though I think finding homes or stew pots is easier with chickens than cats.

Unfortunately hatching chicks is like Forest Gumps box of chocolates, you don't know what you will get. I was surprised many of the EE's came out black, when the mothers are red and blue and the father is lavender.

I will post pics of the chicks I have up for adoption and if you want them that's okay. BYC friends get first dibs.

So please don't misinterpret the musing of an old man, It looks like the weather may be nice so it's outside to work in the garden. I do hope it warms up, summer here in NY is just too short

Aww, you know we love you rancher!!! :)

I don't like getting overloaded with chickens either - it CAN get out of control. Thankfully I keep space concerns in mind and have never crowded chickens in too small a space but I still have too many chickens.. Would like to let my broodies have chicks, but can't until I make room.

One good thing about chickens, if I HAD to I am positive I could have every single chicken off the property in 24 hours by posting a 'free chickens' ad on craigslist. I'd hate to have to do that, but I guarantee I'd have takers. Not so much for cats/dogs/etc. No one wants a 'used' kitty cat so once you've got them, they are yours for the most part..

TSC chick days seem to be really short. I wonder why they don't run them for a month or so longer? They started when it was still well below freezing here and now that it's warming up and people are moving outside the chick days are over..

Our Poultry Club, Fingerlakes Feather club holds a show every 1st Sunday in June. Its a one day show, held at the Poultry Bldg. at the NY State Fairgrounds.
If anyone is interested in getting a show brochure, please email me & I will send you one. If you want it sent via email, then send me your email address.
Its a great way to meet each other.

I wish it was easy with cats! My mother in law got into cat rescue several years ago and ended up with 65 something cats (mostly kittens at the time) in her house! It got to the point where I HATE cats (I used to love them very much) now a days it takes a very special cat to get my attention.

I have hens on eggs and one that just hatched 5 Birchen Maran chicks that are up for grabs. I have other hens sitting on eggs too. I don't believe I will be using this incubator next year, barring some catastrophe. I do wish I could get some fertile BR eggs from my flock. They came from MO and are nice dual heritage birds. I only kept the one roo and I think he is not doing his job.

I have a friend who bought 12 chicks from TSC and something got in and took them all.

Well take care and if you need chicks check with me before you buy. I've still got five hens on eggs. Any new bird goes broody she's done for.

Perhaps she can contact the Central New York Cat Coalition. They can help with getting cats spayed or neutered. You can find representative at the Pet Smart pet stores. They're very helpful. They also operate a catch, spay/neuter release program for feral cats.
