NY chicken lover!!!!

Sigh. Sigh. Sigh.

The TWO grade schools lost power for 3 hours on Monday. One of the schools is thinking of throwing the eggs OUT. I am really upset. (software won't let the word I want to say get through) I am out the money for 8 dozen eggs, if I sold them, and now it looks like I might not get any chicks because the teachers are ready to give up on the hatch. Not happy here. Not happy at all.

Sigh.

(it is close to hatch date, why won't they just follow through and let nature take it's course? )

Oh no!!! Can you take them and see if they hatch?!? That just stinks!

One of the draw backs of e-mail is sometimes you can't get to them soon enough. With the phone you might get to them faster.

Why would they do that?!?! Worst case, nothing hatches..but you and I know that three hours with no power probably won't kill those eggs.. =(

Cass I really hope they don't throw out those eggs, I don't know much yet about hatching eggs but I would think 3 hours wouldn't make that much difference, 3 DAYS ok, but three hours?? Also, I would think they would contact the person who gave them the eggs in the first place to hear their thoughts before making a decision like that.

Cheeka beautiful egg basket!!!

I don't know. I DO know that one of the teacher's is a burn out case and just doesn't want to "do it". 2 of the others want the eggs to hatch so they might stick with it....but one teacher candled the egg and said "one of them just was full of black". Sigh. Ahh, that's that CHICK silly woman, don't give up on it. And these eggs are hard to candle, not a white one among them, so she is trying to candle through olive and blue and brown eggs. I sent an email to the coordinator at one of the schools just about begging him to have the teachers follow through, that the eggs will hatch if properly cared for, just a little later than originally thought due to slightly lower temp at one point. (There are 5-6 teachers involved in this venture.)

Anyone got a 'bator they can lend me, if we don't get the chicks we need to fill out our flocks? Sigh.

I just can't figure people out and my head is too sore to even try. Sighing very loudly.

Cass, I am sorry.

I think if I'd spend more time building a broody coop I would never have to use an incubator. I've got 5 hens on eggs and 1 with chicks. Only thing is other hens keep getting in there and laying right next to the broody hen adding more eggs.

If this darn weather would cooperate. It takes me days to get anything done. I hate being old. I've been trying to dig a post hole. One stinkin hole and it takes me days. There was a huge hunk of cement in the way as the former owner filled this yard in with hard fill. Broken pieces of cement and rocks and tarvia. What a pain.

Well Cass I hope things turn out okay.

Rancher

Perhaps you can make an incubator. I don't know that they don't seem to do a better job than store bought.

I hear you there rancher my yard is about the same if it aint some sort of cement or rocks it's clay. my place was a family owned cow farm of some sorts i know they had cows chickens a slaughter house and a butcher shop on our property along with a trailer or two houseing in different parts of the yard. I tryed to burry my dog and was a pain to find a spot really ****** me off. on top of it i couldnt burry her but like maybe knee deep due to water filling hole.

Oh and rancher i was laughing my butt off over you tradeing chickens for the kid goat. When i first saw the pic of baby goat i even thought of posting " might want to take that down or rancher will trade chicks for it."

hope it works out for you cass i hope they keep trying at least.

cheeka thats a nice basket of eggs i want that many colors later in my flock.
