Plum is Beautiful .
I think the key to roosters is like you said... dont let them get to big for their britches ...for too long .
I think direct eye contact helps ..also if you raised them...*~*

Thank you. That's what we've all been trying to do, I think. We had a really great service where we all shared stories and comforted each other, and one of her other friends found a notebook from our high school days where we had written notes back and forth to each other, which will be great to have. I'm meeting him soon to get that. And chickens sure are a comfort! I spent most of the day today outside watching them and playing with my gosling, who very nicely put up with me hugging her.

Pyxis,

I am sorry to hear you've lost a dear friend. Mine is battling breast cancer now. The world is often a very unfair place. I hope that by thinking of good times shared with your friend it will help you cope with the loss. Try to see the good in every day.

Your chickens are adorable, of course. They will help you to SMILE. Any chicken in a little diaper most certainly brings a chuckle.

Another gorgeous morning here, filled with gentle light and birdsong. Enjoy the day everyone!

PS: I am off to get pine shavings today to fill the coop over a dusting of DE. Any tips on the best type of pine shavings to get? I'm feeling those butterflies that come with any new experience and am so close to getting these birds....I want to do things right. Thanks for any tips!

I use pine shavings in a brown bag(bale) from the feed store. I have also used shavings from when my husband planes pine boards down.
I like pine shavings. They work very well for me. No need to feel anxious as long as they are dry and free of mold you will be fine.

I use Nobel shavings. I get them for $4.50 a bag 3.5 compressed cubic feet or something like that. I use them for the horse stalls too.

Ginny--I'm feeling ok, just am tired most of the time.

Pyxis--Sorry about your best friend. Your plum looks a lot like my partridge wyandotte/buff brahma bantam cross.

I have 4 hours to myself this morning. I think I'm going to go plant some of my garden- radishes and chard.

Get kiln dried shavings. The bigger the pieces the better. I don't like the shavings from TSC. They are tiny pieces that turn to dust in no time. And are more expensive than a local mill. I think the kind I get has a Beaver on the package....have to check.
