NY chicken lover!!!!

Yep, lost one of my EE hens. Got run over in the road. I only had 2 EE hens and this was the better layer of the two of course. Got her from the girl in Morrisville. Thankfully hubby was the one to discover her in the road, it was downpouring when I got home so didn't see her. He said there wasn't much left, been run over a few times. Sadly, there are people around here that aim to hit animals too.

And now I only have one blue egg layer. All the new chicks are brown, olive or dark brown egg layers.

I've got some EE chicks you want to trade for an Olive egger? Or you could bring me some horse manure.

I am sorry for your loss just the same.

That's why I'm afraid to let my chickens free range when I'm not around to supervise...otherwise I like them in their fenced in area.
I don't know where you're located but I have 5 EE chicks about a month old and like Rancher would be willing to trade for an olive or dark brown egg layer.

I just moved the ducks to the coop... with the chickens. Hopefully they become wonderful friends. The ducklings are laying on a nest on the floor. The chickens are all on the top roost looking at them like "what are you things doing in our home?"
The 3 week old Pekins are actually nearly as large as the 10 week old chickens. The Swedish duck and the Rouen are tiny and huddle behind the Pekins.
I have to work tonight, I hope I come home to them braiding eachother's hair and painting eachother's toenails.

Seems that I can't win lately. I left the birds IN the coop yesterday and they ate one of the new chicks. I let them OUT today and my Sumantra roo is missing. Not happy camper here.
so sorry to hear I hope that you at least find your roo.

Yippee.... The 4 week olds were out in the PlayPen yesterdaaaay!!! They were soaking up the sunshine and zipping around like crazy!
Today they were cooped up due to the fact they don't know enuff to get out of the rain, or go up to bed, or to let me catch them to put them to bed!! Uhhg..... That Lil Roo'let is Soooo Fast.... jeesh.

Yes they are fast. "Speak softly and carry a big stick" Literally. I used a long piece of 1x2 to herd my chicks into the coop the first few nights (was that just a year ago? OMG) It extended my reach and I enabled me to get them headed the right direction...once you get the first one to go in the rest will usually follow, except that last one....that one I would pin down with the stick and then grab it and throw it in the coop. (sounds worse than it was, I promise)

No such luck. He didn't show up. Sad to think that he died defending his girls.... There is still hope that he is hiding under the coop, but he didn't show up tonight.

Cute set up! My Silkies didn't know enough to get out of the rain either. I ended up blow drying most of them when I got home from work. Silly chickens!

Hi Everyone,
I'm in the process of uploading some updated pics (they're about 6wks old now) of the lavender chicks to their album. If anyone wants to take a peek and/or a guess of what they may be, I know it's still early, none of them have nothing really developing yet as far as a comb goes. But I didn't know what other characteristics people might go by to help with gender. Thanks!
Wow they are gorgeous. Congratulations! 6 weeks is kind of early to tell. I won't even take a stab at it until 12+ weeks (or until l hear crowing!) I have two whites that look identical in their development and one started crowing at 9-10 weeks. The other hasn't uttered a sound yet. They are 4 months old now. I have a splash boy the same age and he "pretends" to crow. Goes through the motions but nothing comes out. These boys all had a much more upright stance than the girls and started getting the streamers down the back of their necks along with little tiny wattles.

Are you planning on selling any of them?
