NY chicken lover!!!!

Stonykill, I love your kitties.

Here is what became my new duckling hutch:
without the children.
We disassembled an old rabbit hutch for hardware cloth. We put 1/2 inch hardware cloth on all the windows, and a door of the rabbit hutch (hinged, and attached to the hardware cloth of the window by a bungee cord).
Put in some hay and five ducklings and this is where they will spend the night tonight.
It's going to be below freezing again tonight. My husband says we "have to" do something about the windows for the winter. The shutters on the two sides provide some protection, After hearing about the massive "ventilation" some of you have, I don't know if I really need to do anything about the front and back? Any thoughts?

plastic concerns me more than the ventilation. Maybe it is just me but I just don't like plastic

Another crazy day, but so far all is well with the new girls. It has been one week today that I got 4 pullets from Rancher. Thursday will be one week I got Marq's birds. I still have the younger pullets separated from the much larger ones. I brought the young ones in last night & tonight in their cage to our unheated walk-out basement. Just figured it was way too cold too fast to leave them outside in the coop. Anyway, I'll sleep better knowing they are inside. Big girls will be all right, I'm sure.

The bigger gals taught themselves the literal ins and outs of the coop and pen after only being shown the door once. They are so cute, you can almost see them thinking. It's amazing how they have a set routine already and come inside on their own around 7:15 each night.

The Marans head is still the ring leader, which I assumed would be the case. She used the roosting poles immediately, while the Del and 2 Columbian Rocks slept on the floor together for several nights. Last night they all joined "Helen" up on the highest roosting pole. There was obvious excitement among them as if they couldn't believe they'd done it!

The younger pullets are incredibly lovable, but boy can they eat!

Featherz: I'm really sorry about your pullet.

for a few of the weasels I used a pump pellet gun. Anything larger than a weasel gets the .22 or larger caliber. All a pump bb gun will do to a possom is ...well nothing. A pellet gun on a possum, MIGHT I stress MIGHT mortally wound it. You need the right tool for the job at hand.
Thanks Stoney................................. I have a S&W .38................... was hoping a pellet gun would do the job.
Nothing definite yet on a gathering. Sonew is having a chickenstock at her house this year. That is a definite, but not this thread's gathering. (I am sure it will be a great time however. If she is close to you it would be worth going to. The Sharkie chickenstocks are reported to be wonderful gatherings)

We are still trying to get a gathering going for those of us on this thread. (Hoping some go to Sonew's chickenstock and brings back ideas for us to use. (I got a lot of my ideas from reading threads about other gatherings in the past)

When we finally have a host/ess I will put a link to the thread regarding the gathering in my signature line. A bunch of us did that last 2 years so everyone could find the new thread and the information was all gathered in one thread for newbies who wanted to attend. (Sure saved a lot of reading/scanning time if you didn't read this thread for a few days. We sure are a chatty bunch, so separate thread for gathering seems to work quite well)
Thanks Cass, I'l be on the look out for the thread.

I would throw a blanket over it tonight ...I think it might be too cold for the winter ..have you ever touched plastic that has been outside ...? YOOuuch
it may absorb the cold rather than insulate them against it .

I have a colleague who has acquired six pullets (three red sexlinks and three black Americaunas, or more likely Easter Eggers), and know someone else who now has six Rhode Island Red pullets. Morehens is spreading - soon we'll take over the world!
