NY chicken lover!!!!

I know exactly how it spiraled into a debate. Everyone here got all hyper-offended and defensive over what it is we personally do for our chickens because we all love our chickens and want to do what is best for them. Nobody here is operating a factory farm I am certain. THAT is something I would care about in how another chooses to raise THEIR birds.
I am confident that we each do the very best we can based on our resources (of land/time/guard animals/guns/building supplies/zoning/carpentry skills/etc.) to make sure our chickens are happy, healthy, and safe. If I lived in town, I couldn't rely on my dog and guns, so I would be here asking advice on the most secure run ever. If I didn't have my dog, I would be trying to figure out some kind of fencing.

Sorry, I just find it all funny.

The mad march of broodies continues.. It's almost as if they know I am downsizing and feel the need to make more!

And to make matters worse, I now have a broody LEGHORN.. Yikes! She's as sweet as can be, but she's been in that nest for three days so I am calling it.

I didn't even know leghorns went broody. Is that common? I thought they'd bred the broodiness out of the breed entirely.


Looked in the marans coop and there is another chick.

Had a post on CL for marans chicks $5 ea. Someone asked to see a pic of the eggs.

For $5? really?

I can't even find someone selling Birchens. I e-mailed to members of the Marans club and only one person responded to tell me they don't have any for sale. I don't know how Green Fire is getting $49 per chick.

I would say yes. I have 3 BR's that are pullets and they look the same

I noticed my BR roo dancing

with a hen. Next eggs under a broody will be BR's.

I had one go broody last year. She sits on the nest long this year. Just a matter of time. Not normal at all but you can't breed out instinct. Just because it is written does not mean it is true

Jlaw---seems to me that on the incubator page there is one there made out of a small fridge and they explained what they did to make it. Try looking there.

Featherz--I feel your pain. Looks like I have some wannabe broodies starting in.

So after much thought, I think I have a way and a plan on how to incorporate the tots into the diva coop without the divas being able to kill them. The tots will be 8 weeks old on the 26th. I have a puppy pen that will probably fit inside the divas coop so the girls can look but not touch. This way they all get used to each other and then I can let them out together. I am hoping that works. My silkie tots will go into Legolas coop. They seemed okay on the first meeting so I will try it this weekend. If it all works, I get my basement back!

Started another blanket Keeps the hands busy.

I have had my ducklings in a playpen in the yard for the past two weeks or so, the chickens and the ducks can get more used to eachother before they are all together in the same yard. The past two days a couple chickens have been flying into the playpen to figure out what is so fun inside there that the ducklings are always hanging out there.

I'm sure nobody intended to offend anyone, and rancher was pointing out a different attitude you have - it does not show less love for your chickens, just a degree of freedom that some (mostly those with fewer birds) are not comfortable with allowing due to their situations or resources (some that I pointed out). It's similar to making a rooster into dinner. Nobody (here) believes you have any less love and respect for those birds... though some definitely would "NEVER" eat a bird they consider a pet. I can't fathom Lynzi taking one of those freak alien silkies and putting it into a pot. I think they are just winged Shih Tzu puppies.

My broody BO, who was sitting on eight worthless mutt eggs for five days (I candled a couple last night out of curiosity, and the four I looked at were ALL clears - ugh!) is now on twelve of Brahmapapa's eggs, nine Brahmas and three Wyandottes.

Stony and I don't always disagree but when we do it's don't mean we aren't friends. You can learn a lot when someone disagrees with you.

I don't hold grudges and I don't carry baggage of past offenses. I don't think folks mean offense, we just don't know how to write and say what we mean with tact. IMO.

Life is too short.
