NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi all, just a quick question.

Just heard the egg song and went out to get the egg. When I got there, it isn't even warm still - is it unusual for a hen to sing that long after laying, or should I be checking the yard for a secret layer? To my knowledge I have one BCM laying, she just started.

Here's another thought... I often get nice dark brown eggs, and sometimes, just regular store shade of brown. (one day dark, next light, next dark again even) Would this be likely from the same hen (pullet really)? She has laid less than a dozen eggs total (even assuming they are all hers) the other thing is that I have gotten a couple eggs with soft shell (both were light brown) in between ones with good shells. Same question, would it be likely that would be all from the same hen?
Sounds like you have 2 hens laying. In my experience once a hen decides on a color, she sticks with that color...until her body changes it, but once changed it stays, not switching back and forth every other day.

The "egg song" means "come look at me" and is used to brag about laying an egg or the fact they are THINKING about laying an egg....however it is used to say "come look at me cuz I can't see you." too. So finding a cold egg after hearing the egg song isn't unusual. Some chickens don't sing it. Others sing it to hear their own voices, I swear. And sometimes the rooster sings it to round up the flock. (Mean Marge sings it to mess with her friends heads, I swear)

Macedon is about 2 1/2 hours drive and I also went to MVCC and I work there now
hahahah that's awesome!!

Um ask stony and rancher they are experienced and would know. Macedon is about all I know. I'm still learning where a lot of farms are but I did find a lot of farms in NY so I know there has to be someone reputable near you.

Thanks for your responses :)
Quote: Yes, they have oyster shells, I'm not positive of their age as the guy I got them from wasn't sure either, just that they weren't from October last year hatch, so I estimate they were late summer or fall of last year. The combs have turned red and grown since I got them so I watched that happen, and have been waiting on eggs until just recently.

It seems like if it were two of them, I would have a two egg day at some point... (They are always laid in the nest box) So maybe it was a second hen singing the day before song lol. That is what my first girl did. Sang (with the roo joining in a lovely duet

the day before her first egg.) I have never had the Marans before, so wasn't sure about the color. I do read that the color will change as she goes thru her laying cycle (the darkness will), Thought maybe since she was brand new at it that it may have an effect also. Maybe Marquisella will see this and have an idea how the color thing works :)

Hey Everyone,
Those who have ducks, how long did you leave the heat lamp on them when they were ducklings?? (Well, if the weather is extremely warm like it is today) Mine are outside as you may remember and I do have the heat lamp in there with them, but since it's been warm I've been leaving it off during the day and putting it on at night. Well this morning I woke up and went outside to turn it off and I feel like they were roasting in there. Today it's 80 out and it's not supposed to get below 60 overnight. Do I leave it on?? They're just getting so big, and with the weather being so warm I can't see them actually needing it. But I don't know, I'm new to ducks and this is why I ask.

We brought them out into the kiddie pool today and one them hopped right out and darted off into the yard. I didn't think I was going to be able to catch it! They are 10x as fast as they were last week!

Sounds like you have more than one layer, time for egg hunting. From what I have read on egg color, it starts out dark at the beginning of an egg cycle, lightens slightly as they go on. Will darken after a period of rest, such as molt/winter. But it won't change daily. I had a few of those soft eggs too, still find one once in awhile.
I didn't think mine were laying yet last year, never heard egg song or seen squatting. I then found a clutch of 60 eggs. So much for that magical first egg.... Lol

Welcome to the thread..You have a nice variety ! How many do you have ?
They must be less than 5 months old ?
Thank you. I have 18, week old chicks and 4 that are about 3 weeks old plus I have 16 more chicks coming next Tuesday I do now also have few Laying hens and a Rooster that I got yesterday from Tabitha from here. I can't wait until all the babies get big. Next project I want to try is getting an incubator and hatching some eggs and Husband wants some duck and pheasants.
