NY chicken lover!!!!

nice range of chicks there nutty. I'm also thinking of a bator. I some how sold my wife on letting me spend up to 200 on one or to make one. but i dont think i want to make one after building my coop lol. Was looking at a Hova Bator Low Voltage Genesis Egg Incubator 1588 online but still up in the air. They seem to be sold out everywhere so i'm guessing its an ok bator. Still researching them more before i buy one though.

So my new rooster is crowing wife says it woke our daughter up this morning at 6 am. I dont think it did because our room is right next to her room on front side of house and i could barely hear the crowing when i woke up later in day. I think she's just looking for an out for not haveing a roo. But i say he stays just learn to sleep through it lol.

Welcome Nutty! I know exactly where you are as I grew up in Boonville. Small world. Used to ride my bike with my friend from our house to ava and back all summer long. Thats quite a mix you have going there. I am jealous of all the land you have to build coops! I need that much for all the different breeds I want! lol
I grew up in West Leyden graduated from Adirondack in 1991. I am a country girl at heart and love the land cause that means I can have all my animals and no one can complain besides all my neighbors have farm animals themselves.

I haven't sold the hubby on the bator yet but I haven't tried either, all I have to do is tell him could be worse could be another puppy, we have 4 dogs, and he will agree to it. Kids can sleep through a bomb going off she will get used to it. LOL

i sold mine on it saying i could sell ee's for 3 a piece and can hatch like 15+. So within a few months could make money back then all profit. I didn't tell her we could be stuck with all 15+ though lol.

Thanks for your responses :)
Yes, they have oyster shells, I'm not positive of their age as the guy I got them from wasn't sure either, just that they weren't from October last year hatch, so I estimate they were late summer or fall of last year. The combs have turned red and grown since I got them so I watched that happen, and have been waiting on eggs until just recently.
Oh okay then I wasn't sure of the ages so definitely two laying hens. Rock on mine sings a little song when she is done sometimes, it's funny to watch her cuz she peaces out like she has to drop a deuce when it's time to lay an egg OMG it cracks me up. And it is more of phase she has than a song.

I am new to all this and love my 3 girls already. they are funny for sure. the other day 2 got under the door and escaped captive area and I was over on the side working the new coop tractor and they walked over to me and 1 tapped me on the leg and looked up like to say hahaha we got out on you here we are out in the free rang mom. It was so cute I just let them go for awhile they stayed close and even scored a worm. no one will ever tell me that chickens are dumb or do not have personality

Sorry if I missed your entrance.

I'm guessing that if this is the only egg with this much veining it's the only egg that is fertile? Or does it happen that some eggs take longer to get to this stage than others? They are on day 5 in the Bator.

Surprisingly this was the first egg that Pearl laid for me the first day I got her from Lynzi.

Hi all, just a quick question.

Just heard the egg song and went out to get the egg. When I got there, it isn't even warm still - is it unusual for a hen to sing that long after laying, or should I be checking the yard for a secret layer? To my knowledge I have one BCM laying, she just started.

Here's another thought... I often get nice dark brown eggs, and sometimes, just regular store shade of brown. (one day dark, next light, next dark again even) Would this be likely from the same hen (pullet really)? She has laid less than a dozen eggs total (even assuming they are all hers) the other thing is that I have gotten a couple eggs with soft shell (both were light brown) in between ones with good shells. Same question, would it be likely that would be all from the same hen?

Can't really say, but my marans don't lay the same shade every time. Right now I logged on to say I have a Del that is laying a chalky white egg. Not sure why either.

You soft shell may be due to a low calcium problem. I like to toss some oyster shell dust into the feed on occasion.

For however I offered this blue EE, as a roo too, thank you for not taking me up on the offer cuz I think he's a she.
