I havent seen the chickens eat my mint or spearmint ..I think the smell bothers them ..
Same with Basil ? they stay away from my tenants garden that has the herbs
Congrats on your retirement ....More time to chill with the chickensLife of Pi is a good movie. About the mint, lovely smell. I have chocolate mint in the flower bed and it grows onto the patio. Once in a while I step on a leaf and this delicious smell surrounds me. Don't know about the mice and rats, but plant it just for the pleasure of the scent. It makes a nice flavoring, too.
Years ago I had mint and chives planted along the house under my bedroom window. The daughter thought it was weeds and grass and wacked it to neaten up; the stench was unbearable.![]()
This is my first week of retirement and I can't get used to not having to rush. Kind of scary not having a paycheck for the first time in 40 years.
Loving all your pictures of broodies. Fluffy the strange little bantam mix started brooding in the favorite nest box and got ousted by one of the silkies. Now one of the cuckoo marans kicked the silkie out and decided to set on the same eggs. I wonder if anything will hatch and if they will squabble over the chicks if they do.
Quote: Didnt notice the duck at 1st ...till rancher pointed it out .
Mixed up the birds tonight at 0 dark o'clock. Cleaned out the sand from the small side and added wood shavings. Then waited for dark. Moved the 4 birds from that side to the large side. Picked up the co-parenting pair's box and moved it to the small side. Now just have to wait for the ducks and chicks to hatch. Due to hatch on Thursday. I am hoping that my hen likes ducklings as much as Stony's does.
Right now I have the smallest chick I have ever seen in my life. It is 3 days old and can still fit through the hole in the chicken wire. I know I don't own any Quail, but maybe a wild male mated with one of my bantams? Cuz this chick is very very small and FAST. It took me almost 5 minutes to catch it last night. Tonight I caught the momma and threw her into the run and she clucked them close to the mesh side of the run and I caught all three in one hand.
It's supposed to rain tomorrow. I wish I had gotten the rest of my seeds in the ground this weekend. Oh well.
Quote: I wasnt sure when To look at the eggs ..I will go through them again in a few days & toss the blanks ..Ill let you know how many are growing also .
What day were these layed ? friday 17 or sat 18 ? they look like 12 day eggs I have found when I searched for candled eggs
my RIR's are fantastic broody's.Morning all! Another dreary and humid day. I am not looking forward to the heat and humidity that is supposed to arrive tomorrow. Makes work more difficult.
I have one broody in the terrorist coop and boy is she cranky! I open the door to get eggs and she is all puffed up and growing and screaming at me. Fortunately she hasnt gone for me and lets me take the eggs but she acts like she is going to rip me apart. I usually just give her some nice pets and tell her what a good girl she is. One of my young silkie girls is also going broody. She is not sitting yet but when I open the door to get eggs, she spreads her wings and puffs up and screams. I am hoping she starts sitting so she can hatch some eggs from that pen. Time will tell I guess.
I have the tots back in downstairs. I will try introducing them again to the divas coop this weekend at night. They are getting big and need to be out in the coop. My problem hen is Betty. She is lowest in rank in that coop and is just horrible to the tots. Wont let them eat and goes after them constantly. If I yank her out for a couple days, do you think the transition would go better? The other girls didnt really bother with them except for a peck if they tried to push into the food action. I dont dare put the tots in with the terrorists as several of those hens have shown very aggressive moves towards the tots when they were out in the puppy pen. I suspect they would kill them.
Moved my silkie tots to another cage as the rir tots just walk on them when they are together. Nothing intentional as they were all raised together but now they are so big it just happens. The silkies are supposed to go to a new home on friday. I have discovered that Rosey the rir tot is really Uncle Bill. Comb is turning red red and he is going to be a very big boy. I am still thinking 2 pullets and 2 roos, based on the combs.
Off to the pharm today. Might be a two fan day. There is never any air in our little hole in the store. Have a good day all.
