Thank goodness my hens like rain. They were out at 6 am and still out now at 8 pm. I love my automatic door.....makes life easier. I can't wait till the tots can move in with the big girls. But I give the tots credit they were out in the rain today walking thru puddles that were past their knees lol

I really need to build an ark. Lol

Jlaw the best investment I made was electric netting and automatic pop door, I don't have to worry about the chickens except to feed them and collect eggs once a day :)

That's what mine looked like today! LOL and what are you feeding them, fajitas??? I would have taken those leftovers! ;-)

Quesedias.......I had made dinner when my dad called Togo out to eat so I had leftovers from eating with him & I will never eat all that food so the girls got a couple, its very amusing to watch the one run around with a whole piece as her sisters followed her lol.

That's what I meant! Oops! Was thinking quesadillas but fajitas (my dinner tonight) came out LOL looks like they enjoyed their takeout, or yours rather LOL

They love leftovers hence he reason they are such big girls lol actually they rarely get them. They get what they forage for and a little FF at night for a bedtime snack :)

Two more things.

A. My girls got leftover Tortia stuff and leftover short cakes DW made. We ran out of strawberries and whip cream.

II. Candled the rest of the BR eggs and left the poor three girls with no eggs. None were good. The liquid moving around so I knew they were bad. Last nights check yielded all bad eggs too. I cracked them to check and one was a very bad stinky egg.

C. I candled some in the Del coop too and some were bad but many were good. Buckwheat and the Del hen are doing okay. I would put some EE or Marans eggs in with the BR hens but I really don't need more of them. Perhaps the BR's will go back to laying. Next up is the SLW hens. I am not hopeful of getting BR chicks.

Most importantly, I have a friend in MO, Kathyinmo who's son passed away. No details but please keep her in prayer. My BR's came from her.

The newest Mille Fleur breeding rooster Max. He was shipped in yesterday from South Dakota to make up for some of the birds going to the sale this weekend. What do you all think?

So I'm not sure if I mentioned but I took the run I made off the duck house and replaced it (for now) with a wire pen that I had bought the rabbits last summer. Figured this would give them more room to run around, plus I can move it around easily to different spots around their coop so they're not marking up one part of the lawn every day.

Loved this idea and it's been working out great! Until today.....Today of all days! it's pouring rain out there and one of them escapes! Not that it went far, but I wanted to catch it and place it back in the pen. Well imagine my son and I out in the pouring rain trying to catch a single duck who is running around our yard so quickly we can't catch him. I decided it would be better to get the others in the coop, shut the door, and then leave one panel open to the pen so it would run back into it. Got him (or her) in, closed the pen back up, couldn't really tell where it excaped thru but thought it was all set. Nope! He escapes again! This time I'm on my own, I go out there with this little kid umbrella, this time he's running ALL over the yard - across the driveway, under the porch, thru my patio, I'm sure the umbrella was freaking him out but it was down pouring out there. I wasn't about to soaked AGAIN chasing this little bugger down. Finally got him, locked them up in the coop. They've had enough time outside anyway!

Maybe the rain washed a section of dirt away ...so it could escape .
Sounds like you all got your exercise ..can you bribe ducks with food ? Like you can with chickens ? Like a trail of bread crumbs .

When I checked up on the hatching peeps this evening, I found to my complete annoyance that the cardboard barrier I had put up to keep chicklets safe was down, probably pulled off by another nosy hen trying to get up into the broody's business. Mrs. Beasley had three peepers under her, all Brahmas and all hiding up in her feathers. I then noticed a fourth little white fuzzball Brahma on the floor. It must have been pushed out of the nest. I picked it up, assuming it was dead, but noted that it was limp, not stiff. Then, it moved a little bit. So, I brought it inside and sat with it on the couch, warming it up in my hands. Much to my delight, it was soon peeping, then alert, then trying to climb up into my hand and making contented sleepy peeps. So, now it's back with Mrs. B and its siblings behind a much better barrier.

Given that Mrs. B was a complete dingbat for this hatch, if I end up with only four I'm good with it. She's an experienced broody and is fantastic with her chicks, but a bit thick in the head when sitting. Granted, I would have liked all twelve to hatch, but four works when the poor eggies were occasionally knocked on the floor, left to cool because their stupid mother saw one egg in a nest and figured it was hers, and so on. Meanwhile, my Faverolle continues to sit on her duck eggs and growl at all comers (except me). She has development in all of them, so maybe I'll have a few more ducks. Duckehs are an addiction.

As for the turkeys, they're wild little monsters, especially the Bronzes. Unlike some of my brooder-raised chickens and ducks, they show absolutely no fear of humans - instead, they mob you if you put your hand in their brooder. They're more likely to be in your way than cowering from you. The hobbled baby is improving nicely, and is starting to get the hang of using its leg and walking somewhat upright instead of using its wing as a crutch. I'll reset the rubber-band hobbles tomorrow for it. It's eating and drinking normally, and trying to get into scuffles - it's just hampered by that spraddled leg right now. They'll go into the pen tomorrow so they have room, as they're active as anything. I really like them!
