NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi all! I'm also so very sick of thr rain but we've been fortunate on no flooding. My pant legs do get wet as I slop slop along though. Funny you have been talking about raising kids in today's world. I gave up working to help out watching my grandchildren so that the 5 yr old could go to a Christian School. There are also twin 3 yr olds that I watch all day. Last week was the last day of school for the 5 yr old. I have been called stupid, a jerk, been karate chopped, slapped, kicked. Nothing works for discipline. I see the same behavior showing in the twins as well. My son and DIL are going to have HUGE problems very shortly. They just saw the 5 yr old's dr and will be tested for ADHD or ODD ( a new one to me). It scares me for the next generation or 2 as I've been seeing the change every generation since mine. Stony - A moose? I would have never thought it! How cool. The only one I've ever seen was in Yellowstone, 20 some years ago. If you ever get a pic............

So sorry you're dealing with that the good news is that you realize it's a problem. Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a nasty thing to deal with. As I mentioned before I work a lot with juvenile mental health courts and a lot of the kids that show up in the system are diagnosed with ODD and later it becomes CD (conduct disorder). Either way I would get them seeing some sort of psychiatrist or psychologist. It could easily be the early signs of bipolar disorder (or it could just be a 5 year old phase). The good thing is unlike a lot of the parents and grandparents we see you actually are getting help now instead of waiting until it gets way out of hand when they are older.

Pharm, so sorry about your daughter's heart break. Like others have said "better now, than later after children are born". Speaking personally I should have called off my wedding, but was too chicken, due to deposits being non-refundable. After raising 3 children and a lot of unhappiness in my life, I got single. Best thing I ever did. A wise man once said "It will all work out in the end, and if it hasn't worked out, it isn't the end yet".

Leg is killing me today. I think I've developed an allergy to sunshine...my body is in shock being warm and dry while outside.

Momma hen tried to get her ducklings to come out of the coop today. They didn't move toward the door so she jumped out and ran around doing chicken things. Then she went back in and gave them a good talking to. Perhaps they will join her outside tomorrow.

I'm beginning to think my ducks are terrified of me and only me. Every time I walk over to their pen, they go nuts and hop into their coop. My husband is out there mowing on the John Deer, right up next to their pen and they don't even flinch! What's up with that!?!?

And did I mention its driving me crazy I can't look at these eggs now they're in "lockdown"?? I'm going nuts over here. I hope something happens with them tomorrow. I'm getting anxious. Tomorrow will be day 21 and I know they can go a little longer but still. Wish I knew if there was at least movement still going on inside of them.

Stonykill, what a neat thing to see a moose on your property, I had no idea they could be found that often over where you are (Columbia County, right?). I guess they are moving down from Vermont. I'd love to see some here in the Catskills. We had one here once about 10 years ago but that was an anomaly.

A friend at work today told me his chicken coop had been torn apart by a blackbear last night, he lives in Stone Ridge (Ulster County) about 20 miles south of where I live. (We have a LOT of bears here in Phoenicia too). Fortunately his 5 hens were fine, the bear was after the feeder. He now has to figure out the best way to rebuild his run and part of the house, and he said he is no longer going to leave the feeder in the coop at night, it has to go in his house or garage every evening from now on until the bears hibernate in December. He is also considering electric poultry netting, I'll have to read up on that.

Anyone have this issue? It is something I'm worried about as I'm doing final plans for finishing my coop and run this year. I have bears come through my yard and front porch all the time, but they stay away from my fenced-in backyard where my dog's smell must deter them. My coop is within the fenced yard. I guess I'll need to use a feeder that will be easy to bring in the garage each night.

they are very uncommon here in Col county. But we are pretty close to VT. For the last few years there have been sightings inthis area. I really hope being she is here now she is having lil ones here

Rancher I always love pics of your hoop coops, how did you hang your water buckets? I made one for my large coop but not sure how to hang it.

I tie them to the metal of the cattle panel or you can attach them with a hook screwed into the 2x3 cross bar. This pic shows the rope I used and on the other end is a 99 cent clip so I can easily remove the feeder if need be but also the waters since this is the inside of the run. I do not keep waters inside the coops.

Try putting some witch hazel on some gauze and letting it sit on that leg it will take some of the soreness and bruising away.


This rain is terrible.


Really interested in those coops and how you made them plus how quickly do your chickens adapt to the nipple waterers I want to try them even though I change their water at least twice a day and have it sitting up on a block they still make it cruddy and the babies are even worse.

My hens and rooster stayed in the coop all day even though the door was open and the run is covered they said enough is enough too .

Because the nipples are red they peck at them and learn that there is water there. They will go for the other type waterers if available but will use the nipple ones if there is no choice. I show them how to use them as chicks by holding them and pushing on the nipple a few time. Chickens are only dumb about some things. Not this.

So sorry Pharm Your poor daughter..but as you mentioned it's definitally better now than after the wedding. Good for her deciding to move south and find a job she can advance it! Making something good from a bad situation.

Well now I hope you don't mind if I interject. I would rather have gone through what you are going through than what I just went through with mine, who is struggling and can't see a way out of the mess.

Hug our daughter for me. Things will get better in time.

Well my first full day and I am tired. I've never been to the casino so you should have seen me trying to show new folks how to use the slots. I can't explain it well enough but I'm glad the day is over. I don't gamble myself but it is a job.

I will say this, it's sad that folks who can't remember on minute to the next a allowed to go to these places. Fortunately I was there to keep an eye on things and no one lost a lot of money, though I can't interfere.

Next Tues. it's organizing and dropping off at the Drs appts. Looks like a lot too.

On the chicken front two more Del chicks born. A third found dead in the nest with the EE, looks like it got squished. All clean and dry but other hens get in to lay their eggs and I think that's what happened. Sadly the Del hen who started it all has failed to hatch one chick.


I got home late so may pull all eggs and put them under her leaving Buckwheat and the Ee with one chick each. I don't need anymore.

The BR's didn't lay one egg today which may be due to the rainy weather or some disturbance in the force. I'm not at all happy with this lot. I've two new roo chicks so perhaps they may bring in a better line of laying, but still keep the bulk.
