NY chicken lover!!!!

My BYC flock, if you could spare a moment to send up a prayer or good wishes to my family, I'd appreciate it tremendously. My 22-year-old nephew was killed in an accident on Sunday. My sister and brother-in-law, my other nephews, my family, and all his friends and loved ones are devastated - I'm asking all my friends to pray for us or send good thoughts our way, as the support is so greatly needed and appreciated.

A tiny bright spot in the darkness of the past few days - last night, all four duck eggs under my hen hatched into beautiful baby Rouens. They're for my youngest nephew, who at five years old has lost the big brother who was such a huge part of his life. Such a simple thing, yet so meaningful in times like these.

I know from experience that it hurts, and that hurt is never going to go away. However in time your sister and the family will once again be able to see the good and the happiness in the world. I lost a cousin in a house fire a few years ago. I hope that caring for the ducks will help the youngest through this tough time.

Henicillin, My heart skipped a beat when I read your note. I have lost two nieces to freak car accidents and my heart goes out to your family. Sending prayers and warm wishes. Tina

Sorry about everyones losses chickens and family. My prayers are with you.

Ok those that use the water nipples. Do you use them in winter time? If so how do you keep them from freezing? The only thing I could think of was changing the container out a few times through the day seems the nipple would freeze shut if you didn't.

Well I finally got my butt into gear and finished last wall of the little coop. So no more chicks in the house. Have to clean/break down brooder tomorrow and build one in my mud room. Wife is glad to finally get this one out of the house. She's been very understanding and helpful with my chicken obsession so far seeing she don't want any chickens. The chicks I moved out to small coop was laying on floor when I got home tonight going to build some more roosts and hope they get off the ground I already have 4 birds that refuse to roost at all I don't want any more.

Well candled again all the ones that didn't have veins 2 days ago and no others have developed any veins that I can tell. There are some that seem darker at top so wondering if maybe shell is just thicker and I cant see them because it don't look like the thinner ones look where yolk is small these are dark across the top half of egg it seems. Thinking of leaving those in till day 23 and just taking the ones I can clearly see that are duds out in next day or two. Figure at worst they help hold temp steady.

Lynzi I hope get a good severance package.

Grammachick definitely will not be going back there

Cass I think she was a sadist I went in there first time with good range of motion with no pain and they were all surprised not even a week out of surgery gave me some range of motion exercises to do at home second appt. 9 days post op I went in there with perfect range of motion actually was better than the arm that hadn’t had surgery and still no pain arm still slightly weak therapist said to me it is not normal to not have pain when I get done strengthening you today you will have pain let me tell you I have pain and the new shoulder is grinding and popping with limited movement. I did already speak to my lawyer so will see what doctor has to say needs to be done.
Tab unfortunately my initial assumption was right she was sick I went out there and she was dead this morning still warm so put eggs in bator. I did open her crop which was always full and she had a large mass in there. Kinda sad as she was my favorite hen.

Pharm so sorry about the hen.

Rancher Congrats on the grandbaby I think boys are easier.

Henicillin prays going up for you and your family.

Woke up to my splash maran being dead and 3 new chicks in the bator went for an CT Scan and came home to a starving scrawny little puppy in my yard eating some chicken crumbles I had dumped poor little thing was starving to death took it to my vet who gave it some fluids as it was also dehydrated gave her some puppy shots and a small amount of food which she sucked right down took it to dog control as I knew whose dog it was and she went to their house told them that unless they relinquished all rights to the dog they would be brought up on charges and they were more than glad to relinquish all rights to the puppy actually they gave her 4 other puppies as they just can't take care of them. So needless to say this puppy is now officially my new dog.
Get done with the puppy business and look in the bator to see 5 little cochins had hatched. So for today I got 8 new chicks. Still have a few more cochin eggs in the bator so will see if they hatch I hope so .

Grats on new puppy sucks it wasn't taken care of before you got it. I really hate when people don't take care of what they breed. The animal control officer should have made them give up the parents or have one spayed or neutered. I'm sorry but if you cant take care of them at least prevent them from being able to reproduce. If it was a random dog that got they're dog knocked up they could have taken the pups to a shelter and say they was abandoned so the pups wouldn't be starved and hopefully adopted right away.

Then again i'm the guy that breaks from all animals and dodges ones that are already hit. Worst time I braked for was a skunk. I locked the breaks right up. That bugger sprayed my car. And to top it off I blew a break line so had to drive the rest of way home down shifting my automatic car. I wasn't too happy lol.

I agree that she should have made them give up parents they are pure pitts and they thought they were going to make a fortune off the pups which of course didn't happen and what they forget is those pups require lots of food and vet care. I am sure they will be doing it again but at least I did get this one saved. Pitts are not my usual type of dog I prefer little dogs but this one sitting there trying to eat chicken crumble off the ground that was all wet and yucky just won me over I felt so bad for her I could count her ribs from my driveway. A little while here she will fatten right up and be roly poly just like a puppy should. Now she is just waiting for the hubby to pick out a name for her he has named all the dogs so keeping with the tradition he gets to name her

Quote: I think it is possible they are straight leghorns ? I thought they were amber links Pure white ..No other color

Gramma I'm not sure where did you get the teens from? Usually 5 - 6 months but I can imagine there is a bird or two out there laying early.

Chick I bought 6 amber links that were suppose to be white with amber speckles all over well only one get it the rest are pure white. They are 18wks, no eggs yet but my barred rock decided to lay in there best box in their coop silly girl.

Lynzi good luck with you job. My son has been playing outside all sweaty and dirty. When we went to the farm to get feed you couldn't stop him. It was so humid but worth to support local growers.
I got them from TSC..they were in a amber link bin also

Quote: I excepted 5 months ..but 4 months seems too early
good luck with your job .

Gramma,
What breed of chickens are your teens? I have white ones from TSC that were sold as tetra tints, but they are ALL pure white, except for one that has a small amount of brown on her wings. I have 15 of them, if I'm remembering correctly. I lost track counting, but they are 12 to 14 weeks, definitely no older than 14 weeks. My one roo has been crowing already for 2 weeks. The pullets are still making baby cheep sounds, but their combs are beginning to darken a little. But that darn young roo is already crowing, dancing and mating with the older hens. I'll bet the pullets won't be too much longer to mature. Some breeds just mature quickly... that's what they are bred to do!

Good idea with ice in the water to help keep them cool (Gramma?). ( Yes that was me )I don't know why I didn't think of that. I may try freezing some yogurt also for a treat. That would be funny to watch.
supposed to be amber links ..they are pure white .
if I think of it I put in a solid ice block that I froze ...should do that now ..I have a fan in their run today ..Tomorrow too probably
Here are the young ladies

I noticed one of their vents was weird looking today when I put them to bed ...Probably the one that laid a egg ...I think she has a slightly prolapsed vent .
it says somewhat Common in early layers .
Soak her bum in warm water , push back in , apply honey or witch hazel or prep H once daily

Loved my pit. Sadly I didn't do a good job raising her. I didn't socialize her right. She didn't attack people but she would bark and run away. If you was African American, or wearing a hat, or a male she would bark and run. She would put her self between my kids and anyone who came in though and would stay by them. If the people she barked at wasn't scared and told her to just go lay down she would. But soo many of my wifes family is scared of pits she would keep barking at them. Even after we told them to just tell her to lay down. We put her down early due to my daughter. Jasmine had bad allergies and my daughter would pull on her ears all the time. Jas would go away and get on couches but my daughter learned to pull up and walk so there was no escape for this poor dog. I know every animal has its breaking point and it seemed like jas was at about hers she started growling at wife which she never did. So we sadly put her down was hardest thing I've ever done. I just wish I did a better job of getting her around other people so we could have rehomed her but everyone said they would put her down if we took her there so rather than they do it I took her to vet and held her as she was put down. It's been 3 years and wife and I still miss her and compare all our dogs to her.

Afternoon all. I am a horrible chicken momma.
th.gif
I took my sick hen out of the cage and gave her a bath because she stinks so bad. I found that she has a puncture wound of some sort on her lower abdomen and it must be infected as it has a mass of worms in it.
sickbyc.gif
They came out while I was bathing her.
ep.gif
It was gross. I feel bad because I should have checked her more closely but I couldnt see it until I bathed her.
barnie.gif
While she seems okay, I cannot believe that this isnt recoverable. I will have dh put her down tonight. I am an idiot and should have know better. I do believe now that it is NOT coryza but is the pox my silkies have.

All my other silkies look good, even Eowyn, my broody momma. I do have a chick that is going downhill and I am not sure if it the heat or something else. I whipped out the rooster booster today and gave everyone chicken powerade in their waterers. Hopefully this helps. I thank all of you for your support, thoughts and prayers. This has been a rollercoaster ride.

well thats good news & bad news ..At least you know now... we cant always fix everything ...Even if we want to !
