NY chicken lover!!!!

I will have to check out our Country Maxx. It's a couple more miles down the road, but layer feed at TSC is $15 and change. The Purina Flock Raiser was $18 and change (both for 50# bags)! And I have 25 or 27 pullets that I'm feeding but aren't laying yet. A 50# bag lasts me 4 days, give or take.

a friend advised pellets cuz there is less waste. Of course grower only comes in crumbles. Too keep in mind % of protein is reflected in that price.

Agway is cheaper but only 18% in grower. Dumor is 20%.

Country max has "Egg Producer" which has more protein than the "Egg Layer". Also heritage breeds require more protein than hybrids. EE's are hybrids BTW, so a lower protein feed should be good for them.

I am using the "Egg layer" right now but will up to "Egg Producer" come winter time.

Now if I could just do something about these broody hens. Two more today.

Well, as of this morning my broody had three chicks. We'll see tonight when I close up shop how many she's up to. Finally a dry, sunny, warm day! The chickens were loving it.

Nutty - Ugh that duck egg must have smelled awful Glad to hear the others are doing well! Out of curiosity, is it the easter/olive eggers on lockdown?

So now I'm stumped. Is it OK to give higher protein to those that do NOT need it? I have both hybrids and heritage breeds.
What do others feed with mixed flocks?

Well, she had 11 eggs, so technically up to eleven! I hadn't candled them all though so we'll see how she does

My big girls were initiated into cannibalism today. They had a little leftover grilled chicken which I shredded into bits. The Columbian Rocks went wild for it, which I figured they would, as they are like my miniature voracious dinosaurs!

(The cooked carrots and bits of asparagus were not a big hit, however!)

Anyone else have a dog that is terrified of thunder, fireworks, etc. My younger pit-cross is just beside himself scared. He is hiding under my son's bed now. We turn on an empty humidifier just to make a little white noise, but he can hear the big bangs of the fireworks anyway. I feel sorry for him, but nothing we do helps.

(Saw those "thunder shirts" for dogs in a catalog; I can't believe they would work...)

When I was a kid, our terrier used to go bananas. But my labs and lab-mixes never cared, including my pit-lab cross now. But Merlin, who is mostly pit, is terrified. You gotta wonder why it affects some and not others. Temperament, I guess. It actually seems to get worse as Merlin gets older; you think he'd make the connection that nothing bad ever happens, but then I guess his fear is bad enough to make an impact on how he handles future storms, fireworks, etc.

My 2 are terrified of fireworks. One of my neighbors kids were lighting them off at 7 tonight. I was so mad. They laughed as poor Bear starting barking non stop. And lily came running to me crying trying to get in the garden with me

I put them in the house since I was trying to plant a few herbs, thankfully they stopped. I guess the mom heard me complaining about scaring the dogs & hens.

I do put a thunder shirt on bear when fireworks are set off. It really does help. He still will bark but its less and no heavy breathing or panting with his shirt on. I didn't put it on him tonight tho since it was 85 & horribly humid. Just kept working with him to settle down. Thankfully a thunderstorm rolled in so hopefully they won't be back out to set more off
