NY chicken lover!!!!

Some of the yolk has since broken away and its in a different carton part so i'm hoping it will be fine. It's chirping up a storm as of now.
I have had some of mine hatch with some of the yolk attached actually one of them today did. It eventually comes off on its own just leave it be. I just made sure after it was dry to put in brooder with food and water.

Thanks nutty after seeing your response I checked my other thread and someone posted

"Are you talking about the slimy string shown in the pic? That is "egg gunk" and perfectly normal. Nothing to worry about. "

I am a worry sport my son gets his emotions from me so I was up set over this before it even was a problem.

Yup, should be ok! :) And congrats on the new baby chick! :)

Morning all. Ran the gauntlet of mosquitoes to let the cheeps out. Got eaten alive anyways. Not going to be a good day for those of us with breathing problems. My lungs are in rebellion so advair here I come. Very long day at work today.

Tab--take care and get some rest.

Jlaw---if you are really set on barred rocks, then make the investment and buy from good quality lines. Trying to breed from poor or average to get good birds is difficult. I know, I tried. I finally bit the bullet and bought hatching eggs from reputable breeders. The difference was immediately clear when the chicks hatched out. I am in the process of replacing my existing terrorist flock with heritage breed rir;s. I figure it will be a two year project as the tater tots are only 14 weeks old at this point. I did the same thing with my silkies...bought quality lines from quality breeders. If you start with a good foundation, then you can build off that. Just my opinion of course.

Forgot to mention that dh put a ramp in the silkie coop/run so the babies can follow momma out into the larger pen. What a guy!

Love vet wrap for so many uses.

Found it cheapest on Jeffers equine site. I stock up whenever they have a sale. Used it on my dogs, horses, me ...... it just conforms to all those spots that are hard to cover and stays where you put it. Easy to cut off too.

P - 10 peepers! That is so cool ! What kind are they and do you want to sell any - there is someone who has 3 adult hens and can take one more ... but hen only where they live. They want to start out with a young one to play with - so these may not work since I don't think they are sex linked ???? Never hurts to ask.

Hmm I'm just curious because I have a BO roo and a Sebright roo that grew up together and are now just a bit over a year old and they seem to be getting a bit more aggressive with each other lately so I'm hoping it wont get out of hand...they had been okay, the sebright always submits and runs away from the BO but the BO seems to be going after him a little more lately.

Woke up to the chick being completely out! Can't believe I was able to pull that off! When I took that egg out of the coop I just kept saying why am I risking this, I'm gonna end up killing it...Sooooooo happy it hatched!!

JLaw - congrats on your first hatched chick! Sounds like everything is normal with it. If you guys woke up to it and never watched the whole thing from start to finish, you probably never would have seen the yolk, just pieces of it. So everything sounds like its going well!

My two GLW boys were brothers and always together. They were fine last year, of course had the big Black Orp roo as leader. Even after the Orp roo was gone, they got along fine. But when the hens picked up laying again this spring, tension grew between them with the one becoming the dominant bully. If something was happening, they would work together, but otherwise bully would chase the other off. Once the bully started getting in my little girl's face, he was eliminated. Now I have the calmer GLW roo and he has been a good boy. The EE boy is still in the Eglu, not so much because of roo fights but more he would advance on the younger birds and possibly hurt them with his weight.

Well, a bird I was given by a friend seems to have bumblefoot, so I did the surgery. And I found no plugs, despite the redness and swelling. Plus I'm all paranoid that I'll somehow contract the staph or the chicks that live in the workshop where I did the surgery will get it. And I'm worried that I cut the hen up for no reason since I found no plugs, or that I managed to introduce new bacteria to her foot since a workshop isn't exactly a sterile environment. I did find some little chunks of yellow cheesy stuff, and those are out, but no big plugs like you can see on the 'how to' thread. Oh well, I know I did what I could for her. Maybe I'll try the Tricide Neo approach if her feet still don't heal up.

Anyway, happy Fourth of July! And in better news, Penny had her ten chicks out in the run today, and they were just adorable.
I am treating a hen for bumble foot as well. Soaked & tried to cut the plug out 3 days in a row. The heat/humidity is so high that I decided to give her a few days off from poking & prodding. I am using a sugar & iodine poultice to try and heal it. I am hoping after a few days to work in I will see improvement when I soak her again Sunday. The vet wrap works great but I also put duct tape pieces on the vet wrap since we are getting rain daily. Her booties are holding up well in the rain & mud.

I purchased a biopsy punch online to see if that helps with getting the scab & core out. The exacto knife works but chicken foot pads are tough. Someone on another thread used one & said it was much easier
