NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning Everyone,
Back to the grind for me...not for very much longer thank god!

Pharm ~ Thanks for the verification on my blue silkie chick.

Rancher ~ Yea, after joining this thread and reading all the info about bringing other birds into your flock, I knew I would eventually want to start hatching my own. I've been lucky so far with finding trustworthy people to get other birds from to start off with. So now that I have what I need to get my own lines going, I've decided to finally start hatching. Since this first hatch was a small one I was very happy to get a lighter blue, a blue splash and a darker blue - but was disappointed when I realized that last dark blue chick only had 4 toes. I'll be keeping it around though.

Featherz ~ Have you ever been to the Yankee Candle Factory/Butterfly Exhibit in Mass?? They're right near each other, we took the kids there the first year we moved to Albany. Made a day trip out of it meeting the parents from CT there. You could always stop at Lee outlets on the way home for a little shopping and of course I would definitely make a stop at Coccadotts Cakeshop for some cupcakes if it were my birthday and I was still living in the Albany area.

Ants have taken over the cauliflower & endive sections of our garden. We've tried vinegar and constarch (even w/a little cinnamon) with little to no luck. Any suggestions?

Funny you should mention ants. I've got them going into my pots with eggplant plants. Iv'e been putting poison in a cap next to them. The chickens don't go here as they are in my drive.

You might try the ant traps since the poison is inside and the chickens won't have access. I intend to put some around my eggplants.

So you are putting poison next to something you will eat ? But you wouldnt let the chickens near it ?

Is it AP cider vinegar ? bugs love that stuff
Try digging them up ? or covering them with leaves straw
Or
Heres some things to try :
Cornmeal : its too big they cant digest it
marigold plants - natural insecticide
Drown them with water or try boiling water
Ammonia
For ants in our house I use Ammonia or windex ( any brand ) I spray the inside bottom of the door to discourage them from coming in
Cayenne Pepper or Some hot sauce
All I can think of now ...

I keep meaning to ask everyone if they're having major ant problems this summer. Those teeny tiny ones are EVERYWHERE! The chicken coops, tin cans I keep their food in, in the rabbit food, in my house, in my potted plants! UGH, and this morning I went up to my office to work and they were on my desk! I JUST cleaned that area up there so it's not even like there was food left out or anything. So annoying! And if I spray, they just move on to the next available spot.

Well I just candled the orp mix eggs. Out of 15, 6 are still good. 3 were not fertile, and 6 stopped developing. These last 6 still have a good movement and development going on. I have another broody - my son's hen. She's in there sitting on 2 eggs that I mustn't have gotten around to collecting. Those will be taken out today. I don't need anymore chicks outside for now. I booted Stella from the brooder box. As much as I wanted her to raise these chicks all on her own, I could never get in there to change water, replace food, clean shavings, etc. She'd always peck at me. I also want these chicks to be used to us and we weren't able to hold them with her in there. Then the lone chick hatched and I thought I'd be able to move her out there with the other chicks and Stella but Stella didn't seem to like that too much. It's like she knew it didn't belong and kept pecking at it. So I grabbed her and kept all the chicks outside in the brooder box. I had brought the two that I'm keeping inside to keep with this blue chick but they were just too loud. Cheeping over and over because I'm sure they were looking for the others. I felt bad so I placed them back and removed Stella. She's back in with the other's and free ranging during the day with them.

Still no eggs from the silkies. No teenagers crowing either. They'll be 15wks old this week. Still no comb development, no rooster like behavior. I know for sure which one I want to keep. Just trying to decide if I should keep one more or sell two.

Ants have really stinky feet ....so everyone else can follow their trail . so you probably have little ant trails all over your house
I would recommend mopping floors with ammonia & water (Can add a drop of dish soap if you like bubbly water ) to get rid of their trails .
If you have never used ammonia ...Have lots of windows open ...Draw your hot water 1st ...then add the ammonia ..
As it is very bad to breathe if you add your ammonia 1st .
Make sure you do the inside bottom of the outside doors to prevent them from coming in in the 1st place
