NY chicken lover!!!!

We all do goofy things like that ....Glad she is okay .
Your chickens dont free range ? Are you right in the city ?

We thought that we might try free range one day because the digs are rather calm when the chickens are behind the fence. Guess not anymore. I am in the Freemont area of Manlius and my property is zoned Agri.

Sounds like no harm was done!  Good thing your lab was being good.  My MIL & FIL had a lab that would go get the chickens out from the swamp when they got out (on command).  She would bring them back in a loose hold in her mouth... never hurt them.
I'm left asking why your MIL's dog wasn't leashed???  Or is this on the same property?

I live on her property, we share the use of the yard which is where my coop/run is and where the dogs roam. I am trying to teach my Lab to bring them in by herding them to the ramp into the coop. He spends time in the run with me and the chickens almost daily.

I've picked my first beans this week and I have harvested broccoli. My tomatoes are runty looking though. I don't think they liked all the rain. The next couple days are supposed to be dry here which is good.

Rancher, the Jostaberry cuttings I put in last year have been eaten bad by beetles since I haven't been able to free range as much this year. The currents haven't been touched but produced quite a bit this year. Not enough for jam yet, but enough to pick and enjoy. I haven never fertilized the gooseberries, I live on a drumlin, poor soil, but they are well drained.

Sorry for the bad pic, but I didn't want to get scolded

A friend is raising them with her young ones, I'll get them back when they're old enough to go in with the big girls.

Thought I would share my BCM, George, & newly found voice this morning. He tried a couple weeks ago & it was really bad. This morning he was crowing up a storm. Hopefully since its not loud the neighbors dont hear him

He needs to go back to Sue this week since he started crowing. I am not allowed to have roosters but no one was the wiser since he didnt crow, I am going to miss him. My first Roo and he is so much fun to watch. I am going to miss him

He's a handsome young fella...too bad he can't stay. Your birds look very content!

Morning all. Another dreary day today with more rain expected. Because it has been hot, humid and lots of rain, I decided to treat the coops again as a preventative against mites. I sprayed down the two big coops with permeth and then added generous helpings of de to the litter and also permeth powder to everything. I have not seen anything on the cheeps nor any signs yet of anything on the coops but after the nightmare of last fall of trying to get rid of mites for a month, I figure an ounce of prevention is much better. I have been checking everyone frequently as I know how fast things can appear.

Is this particular weather (wet, hot, humid) favorable for mites? I dusted with DE again when I cleaned the coop to the bottom a week or so ago. I wondered if I should do the pen, as well. I do mix the DE with the sand in the girls' favorite dusting spot. (Of course, "dusting" is not a very accurate term during this wet weather!) Wish every day could be more like today...what a pleasure!

I am an idiot. I went from the outdoor run to inside the coop to care for the chicken with the wing injuries that I got from Lynzi. I didn't close the fence gate begins me all the way. Annie my Red sex link got out. (She is ok right now) my black lab was good, he tried to herd her the way I have been teaching him. Well my mother in laws dogs tear *** across the yard and start trying to kill her. Her only saving grace was my silly black lab who got her first and pinned her down ( he does this with cats too, no pressure, just a hold) so I could grab her. I was able to get her into the run and she went straight into the coop. I checked on her, no wounds. Just some hurt pride on my part. I can't believe I left the gate open.

Oh, you must have been a wreck during that episode. A bit of adrenaline still kicking around from that experience, I'm sure. So glad it turned out OK. I am the Queen of Forgetfulness, so I'm sure not judging!

The big girls have apparently decided that the tots are not going anywhere and don't chase them nearly as much as they used to. I have actually seen the tots within 5 feet of the big girls. But they still like to make sure the tots dont forget they are in charge......as you can see when the one hen takes 2 steps towards George

Its been 6 weeks now since I got the tots & 2 weeks since the tots were moved in with the big girls. I am very pleased with how smooth it went. Though Edie is still their favorite target. I think I its because she is white

That's great that it is going smoothly for you.

Mine do not mix well at all. Now with the Brabanter having an eye problem, I definitely don't want her to get stressed any further. The little ones run right to me or the pen gate when I try to mix my birds. The day will come, but not yet. Part of the problem is we go away for long weekends and there's no way I'm leaving them mixed and alone at this stage.

Bree - I can't speak for anyone else but I've left doors open through the night and didn't latch them well only to find the birds in the yard in the AM.

TOB - I am sorry for your trouble mixing the girls. I have had a few problems and am right now.

I've moved all the birds out of the back room, w/ the intent not to use it for chickens again, and put them in with the EE's where they have yet to go into the coop on their own at night. Last night there they were in a pile near the back room door wet with the rain. I had little trouble picking them up and moving them to the coop. AGAIN!.

I tried to put the blue EE hen in with the Marans but she got beat up by one of the younger roos and jumped the fence back to the yard. I am still trying to get the young Marans roos into the Marans coop too. Every night I pick them up and move them and every morning when I let them out the jump the fence back to the other side. I am undaunted.

Looks like I have another frizzle.

The chick is barred, but so far just showing it's frizzle. If it's head spot is any indication it's a roo. The del patterned frizzle is looking really frizzed. My plan is to develop some frizzled EE's and Marans. or at least some crosses just for fun.

Spent the better part of today cleaning and bagging currants and gooseberries. I measured or weighed them and marked the bags according to the recipe they will be used for then put them in the freezer. Next to get the raspberries.
