Well - I am not against shooting a pest animal ---

but we ALL have forgotten to close a gate or check the wear on a tie out or whatever .... so I always give ONE free pass - and make sure the owner knows. After all, the owner could be mortified and go to extra lengths to have it not happen again.

BUT if they just don't care or respect my things - then I go for a permanent solution.

No, it was our 1 year old laying hen. Your little girl is still in the Eglu, tried to integrate her once and the 4 young boys beat on her, so will try moving the coop this weekend and switch them. Her into the flock, 4 rowdy boys into solitary.

This isn't the first time we have had their dogs running across our property. The dogs run free, no fence or leash. Unlikely vaccinated. When first building our horse barn, one of their other young dogs chewed through a Dewalt power charger cord ($80) and the adhesive-backed foam strips that get tucked under the steel roofing/walls (about another $50, at least). All we got was a "sorry, he is just a pup. If he is bothering you, go ahead and chase him with the whip. We'll try to keep him tied up." That was a black Aussie. Then there was a red merle Aussie running through our pasture last summer, stalking the horses. Chicken killer is a yellow Aussie. They have one older-than-dirt looking tri-color Aussie, that one stays home.

I believe she is a Delaware. They are very nosy and friendly. They are usually the first to come and inspect things.

Last night found multiple piles of black/white feathers, one by the back deck and another 2-3 alongside the garage. Called the girls for treats and one of the Anconas are missing. Those are NOT easy birds to catch, very alert and fast. The Amish finally mowed our field yesterday, so I suspected one of their stupid dogs followed down and found a snack. No body or blood to be found anywhere, just feathers. But had no proof it was their dog.
Well, this morning as we are getting into the car to leave for work, hear a ruckus with the chickens. Walk out of the garage to have the EE hen go streaking past the garage with that danged Amish dog, a yellow Australian Shepard, chasing full speed after her. So glad it is Friday so I had my sneakers on, cause I went running after that dog screaming like a banshee. And all my husband could yell behind me was to be nice and not say anything mean to the Amish!

Well my lungs gave out halfway up the hill (a runner I am not), but got up there and let the woman know that came out of the barn that she either ties up the dog or kills it, because it killed one of my chickens yesterday and was after them again this morning.

Hubby pulls up in the car and tries to smooth things over. Ugh, sometimes I could just slap him. So now I am at work, exhausted and a sore throat from the busy work week and this morning's adventure. Hoping it is a quiet day today, Im ready for a nap.

I'm with you and would have probably reacted the exact same way from the get-go. Sorry about your Ancona...that's really a shame. I'm glad you interceded and saved the 2nd hen. Your hunch was probably right and it was the dog the 1st time around, too. Hope you can work something out with your Amish neighbors. They need to respect your property and keep their dog restrained.

My throat is sore, too, but I think I have managed to catch a summer cold. Go figure...

Just found a big nasty cicada on my tree out back! Funny my son found the molt of one earlier and I'm like, Wow, that looks like a cicada molt. I'm up at the coops now and I found the bug! Lol

Just started hearing their summer chatter day before yesterday. Right on schedule...!

Hi guys! I asked you this last year and you had great suggestions, so am asking again this year. What to do for my birthday, which is tomorrow! So far I have a) mystic aquarium (really far) or b) Vermont teddy bear factory and shelburne museum. In that vein, any other suggestions? Already been to howe caverns and ausable, don't want to do great escape. Did lake george cruise last year.  No movies I want to see that are out right now. Think of something your 14 year old daughter would find fun, no wine tastings or fancy dinners. Must allow jeans.

As for chicken stuff. need to rehome more birdies, trying to decide who should go. If anyone near me needs laying hens, reasonably young 1ish years old to 1.5 and not hatchery birds, let me know what you are looking for!! =) My fridge is jam packed full of eggs and I'm trying to do school and work, so need to have less time spent on birdie maintenance. Sides, I have county boy birds here and they are so cute I don't need anything else !

I rarely use the incubator. This year it has only been used to hatch eggs broody's had to leave to raise chicks. So 8 days ago I put 6 eggs in the bator. Had no idea how long they had been sat on. They were extra's under the broody. Laid late. With the hot temps I was having trouble not having the temp go crazy so I finally just left it at 95 degree's. I never turned them. This afternoon 3 of the 6 hatched.

My point. People fret way too much over incubating. Eggs are amazing. Doesn't take much to hatch them.
