NY chicken lover!!!!

Wookiee is dead. My mother in laws gods be ****** evil dog killed her. Pulled her through inch size bars to get her outside and then ravaged her. I cane out just in time to hold her while she died. The dog needs to go. I can't stand living in this woman's house. Had she gotten this dog before I got my first chickens I would have never gotten them. I don't feel safe around the dog, I would not trust him with small children, cats or small dogs. I will snap his neck with my bare hands if I ever see him even think of going near my coop again.

Breela, sorry to hear about your chicken. I think I could snap it's neck if it killed one of my birds....

Can you separate the roo for a while until they are bigger??
This hen is about same size of my roo. I just don't think the people who had her before me let her move too much so weaker legs. I have her alone in the 4x8 coop may give her a friend if she seems too lonely I have a cochin that is younger than her may be easy around her.

I'm so sorry. That must have been absolutely heartbreaking. I'd take the dog myself on the spot. (What kind of dog is this???)

I think I heard 6 inches is deep enough ...

Beautiful Coop & Run . A Deluxe chicken Hotel !
Are those metal roofs ? expensive I will bet !
We are putting a new roof on the Coop & run ...& enlarging both ...a little ..on a budget
.I love that I wont have to worry about snow crushing the run this year it will have a real roof !
My husband says we have too many chickens ..I told him the Roos arent staying ..LOL

I saw a FOX today ...the wild birds were making a ruckus in the woods ..I thought maybe my cat was in there ..
So I made my usual perimeter sweep ..I see a red animal in the clearing ....thought it was my tenants cat ..cleaning itself ..
Looked a little closer ..No it was a fox ...I ran back to the house ...but we couldnt locate it when we went back out ..
UGGGH Missed Opportunity !

JLAW - using the roosts I wouldn't think a 1ft drop should be a problem for any chicken.
Most chickies have a ramp for exiting...is she full grown ?

We was wrestling some and he planted his hand on the bee < - it was probably alive till this happened ..They sleep at night if inside
I hope he is okay ..

My hubby didn't want to spend all this summer finishing a run like he did last year doing the shack!! Soooo.... We spent the money now so we won't have to worry about doing it all over again down the road.
I worry so much being so close to the creek and state land beyond our property. Being protected land there are aaaaaall kinds of animals back there!!! We've seen two types of Fox on our property, and thank goodness for the ravens they alarm everyone if anything is amiss!!!!!

Broody fever here too.. two of my chickens finally gave up in one coop (they were sharing the nest box and one nearly ate the other's head bald out of snuggling together and broody boredom.. But in my other coop, I have four all sitting on top of each other. Argh!
Lots of broodies here to. Have a broody guinea in the ditch that attacks you, my best lemon blue hen has a clutch of eggs under a shed but can't get to her, 3 broody comets, and 2 broody bantam cochins. So I'm hatching hatching hatching except my LF Cochins stopped laying and I don't have enough hatched from them to move forward with the project!!

Wow, in one day there are lots of things going on, between stolen signs, lice infestations, fox sightings and (so sorry, Breella) another dog-ravaged chicken. NOT a particularly good day for several folks.

Here things are fairly well. The Brabanter, Gertie's, eye is looking better, though not normal. Encouraging is that she seems perkier and more active and the eye is kept open a little more each day. Fingers crossed.

What's really worrying me is this week ahead of brutal heat and humidity...originally supposed to break on Wed. or Thurs., now not until Saturday, supposedly. I just cannot stand it. The coop gets so hot!

Rancher, the frizzles are simply adorable! I must resist for now, however! I feel I have my hands full with the 2 separate flocks for now. Throw in a hubby, 2 kids, my 85-year old mom, 2 dogs and a horse, and I'm a busy lady.

Take care, everyone! Let's hope for a good day across the board tomorrow.

Breella - sent you a Pm, but again, I'm so sorry to hear of your Chicken!!! Hope something gets done about that dog!

I appreciate you telling me. I was planning on treating everyone with Ivomectin anyway, just means I need to do it rather than want to do it. I wonder if maybe it is part of what is wrong with Frenchies feathers. Maybe it wasn't just overbreeding, maybe she was trying to preen them off herself. The BRs could be patient zero. I will try the Dawn also. I can't imagine trying to bathe Duane.

As for Wookiee, I am devastated. I did my best to reinforce the coop run before dark. I will be working on that some more tomorrow. I am going to ask my mother in law to pay for more of the small hole mesh to run around the bottom. I wouldn't need it if it wasn't for her dog. My dog is wonderful. A little excitable but he hasn't killed anything, not cat, chicken, not even my lizard. My dog even saved Annie the other day. I wish he had been outside this afternoon. :(

I need to relax before I get myself worked up again.

Sorry about your loss. Maybe have her pay for an electric fence around coops/runs? Have you let her know you don't feel safe around the dog?

Well I looked the silkies over and they are fine. No bugs. So I guess the DE is helping them. Managed to spray the big girls and Duncan with some dawn/water today. I plan on looking them over tomorrow morning before letting them out of the coop. It'll be easier to take them out individually than to catch them once their out free ranging. I'll check the chicks over tomorrow too, give them another bath if needed. But they were clear as day after that bath today. Phew! They only had a few on them thank god! They're still small enough to see if I got rid of them all so that's good at least. Alright I feel gross after all this talk and now I'm all heeby jeeby'ed out!

He is some kind of Pit mix. I have nothing personal against pits and pit mixes, when raised right they can be wonderful dogs, I owned a pit mix myself for many years.. This dog however has an unknown past. My mother in law adopted him. She will not crate him, she will not chain him... :( she doesn't think she has to work with him. She thinks that he will just be a good dog because her older dog is a good dog. Not all dogs are naturally good, most need training and work.
