Well, plans of working on the hoop coop today went out the window. Instead I got some nice food poisoning from some bologna that we bought not even two days ago, so it was either sold to us bad or the place we got it from stores it improperly. Not a fun day. At least I have my silkie chicks to cheer me up.

I hope you feel better soon. Food poisoning is no fun.

I have a number of vines. One hangning down into the yard. Another way up high, that I tried to pull down and broke a a bunch of fruit. They grow up high into the trees.

DW and I did go and pick raspberries and red currants today. I've got quite a few recipes to make up. Did I mention yesterdays jam came our really well. Blueberry/ rasp.

I picked raspberries, blackberries and blueberries off my bushes tonight. I want to make jam also. Haven't done that in years. We traveled to Maine last summer and bought Blueberry jam or preserves and it was delicious. Might try the blueberries with the others.

How long does it usually take for a hen to start laying again after she's done being broody or has hatched out chicks and is no longer raising them?

In my experience, Once she has kicked them loose to fend for themselves they can start laying as soon as the next day (Momma) or 2 weeks (Idiot Mom). So basically whenever she wants to. LOL

Is there some kind of cone I can buy for a self mutilating chicken? Frenchie has started to pick at her chest and around the healing back. I ordered a saddle for er back but unsure what to do about her chest.

Is she laying eggs? Does she spend a lot of time in the nest box? She may be broody. They pull their own chest feathers out when they are broody. Usually they "feather their nest" with them and the bare skin is warmer against the eggs (and more humid). She may just be too hot to heal so she is pulling feathers. Are you sure she has no kind of feather bugs?

Since feather plucking is done on purpose by broody hens and they survive, I wouldn't worry about it. Have you increased her protein? I give my chickens canned soft cat food when they need extra protein. Ironically the chicken kind is their favorite. LOL

Love coming home from the grocery store to find the ladies making a mess of the storage bench on our porch! I don't even know what's up there that they could possibly be interested in!

Seems like your girls are always up to something around the house!!!

Bought and tried a cookie at the Farmers market. It had potato chips in it. YUK! I ate half and gave the other half to my SIL.

I hope that you feel better soon! How are the chicks doing? The hoop coop is so much fun to make hope you can start soon. How are you going to do yours? I choose to use cattle panels to make the frame.

They're doing good. Such pretty little things! After having silkies from show lines/breeder lines I don't think I'll ever go back to hatchery silkies. There's just no comparing the quality.

And yep, cattle panels! I picked them up Saturday with the intent to start Sunday, but that didn't happen. Stupid bologna.

Sally, I'm completely confused.  I'm in the Fingerlakes area also (Canandaigua) so you can't be too far from me.  We have more ground water than we know what to do with.  I don't know of anyone's streams that aren't running well.  Do you keep getting missed by the rain? 

Remember those days of rain, rain, rain? We've had very little since then and when it does rain it comes in torrential downpours and just runs off. It poured last night for about an hour and the creek doesn't look any different than the pic. A lot of the storms just give us sprinkles. *sigh*

Help !
I have a hen that's crop is large, About the size of an apple. It is really really soft, almost likes its full of fluid. She's lethargic, although a bit better this moning. I just found this last evening. Any suggestions ?? She's not eating or drinking.
