NY chicken lover!!!!

Yeah, it's been buggy lately for sure. The little pussy willow I planted in the pen seems to attract Japanese beetles. My favorite thing is to take them off the leaves and feed them to the girls. They seem to enjoy the crunch! Maybe they're like potato chips?

Have you named him yet ? He is like 1/2 black & 1/2 blue ...LOL

I haven't named him yet....he's so huge! I want him to have big bold name, something strong sounding. I'll get better pics when he's allowed out of the pen I'm keeping him in for now. Can't really see the beautiful splash of colors on his back in this pic with it being so dark from the tarp.

Lynzi - Splash is part of the blue breeding.  When breeding for Blue, you have chances of Blue, Black or Splash (BBS)  The quad of Orpingtons from Annie (HappyHen) had a Black Roo, Black Hen, Blue Hen (Luna my broody) and Splash Roo.  Tab and Trav kept the splash for a breeding project.  My black boy Ron was a big, handsome and kind fellow.  I gave him to someone, who then passed him on to another person that needed him for their black Orp flock.
ScratchCradle has a really good article on chicken genomes, which may be a good read for you if getting into breeding projects.

This won't really be a "project" for colors, I wasn't even really searching for a roo at all, just skimming thru the farm and garden section of Syracuse on CL and this ad caught my eye. When I saw the splash roo I fell in love with his coloring and figured I'd give it a try again with having a roo since this girl claimed them to be so friendly. Not really breeding for anything in particular as I have a buff and lavender orp. Not sure what colors would come from them but happy they'll be pure bred orps. :-)

My transplanted zucchini and yellow squash died shortly after transplant.

How the heck can you kill zucchini? Anyways, I replanted seeds and just picked my first zuke and yellow squash this weekend. For the first time ever, we dusted and fertilized the garden. Worry-free Sevin and the Miracle Grow Shake N Feed stuff. Hubby was tired of losing plants every year to bugs and having a poor crop. We don't do Organic, but do try to avoid chemical warfare. But rather have something to harvest and eat this year.

I had a Rose of Sharon die! Those blasted things keep multiplying and I keep pulling the little buggers up..

So I was out there. Got lots of cukes and there are some peppers. Tomatoes don't look as good as previous years , though I think I got them in late. I have some peas but I think a rabbit got some and they're not producing much. The bed they're in never seems to do well, though I did add some manure and soil.

I've been spraying and dusting the squash with seven cuz last year I got squat. The only thing that did grow is a pumpkin that I didn't plant.

I weed whacked the whole back garden and put some Miracle grow on and watered it even though it sprinkled some. I don't know that it will get much rain.

Well take care and thank for the encouragement,

Rancher

Maybe it was cruel to tie it to the tree? Probably it would have been a crime of passion if he had shot it with a feathers in its mouth?

Yeah that's what probably got him in trouble. I'm sure if he shot it in the act, it would have been a different story. You have a right to defend your livestock, but to catch the dog and then tie it up before you shoot it just doesn't sound right.

Great pic
Quote: I got my veggies in the earliest ever- the beginning of May. But the the month of torrential rains after put most of them under water......they finally dried out the beginning of July. I lost some zucchini plants and the rest of the vine plants are slwly starting to grow and get blooms. My tomatoes are far behind in growth from last year. I have 3 plants that are 3 inches tall dead on the top with one large tomato on each. The other tomatoes just started growing in height the last couple weeks. My peppers are all 2 or 3 inches tall that did have fruit the size of quarter that of course rotted

Bad year for peppers. The only things that did well were the pumpkins I didn't plant, potatoes and the sunflowers. I am hopeful to get a few cukes, watermelons and a zuke or 2. Peas, snake gourds and other sunflowers didn't grow at all. My kale, turnip greens & beet greens & swiss chard did really well though and I started them with seed. I am on my 3rd cutting already on them.

Rancher I have hundreds of them from when they reseed themselves & I dont do a thing to the garden (not even water it) They are next to the shed, I just transplanted some oday to put in the hens forage area so they will have natural shade. I could make a hedgerow with them with all the seedlings

Pharm ~ I'm so sorry to hear about Mean Marge. Even worse not knowing what caused her to pass.

CountryBoy ~ Cute lil' chick ya got there!

ke5hde ~ Those are cute lil barnies (or almost barnies). One of them seems to have some nice coloring, no? Stinks when you purchase chicks and they're not what you expected them to be. I learned that lesson last year when I was impatient with finding good quality silkies and ended up with what looked more like hatchery stock.
