poor poor birds you went and cut they're tails off. No wonder the first one is trying to hide in the shadow the second one is confused and the third one is trying to hide in the bushes

Well i placed eggs in bator last mon/tues. I candled today just to see what i could see. Out of 42 eggs so farm i have 1-2 blood rings 18 with veins i can clearly see and 8 that are iffy not sure if cause they was tuesday or fridge eggs or just slower. The rest look like duds. The wife wasnt too happy when i was candling the eggs and had so many veins. I wasnt happy i had so few veins.

I'm back....upset and happy at the same time. Love the ducks, they're beautiful. However I think they are both drakes. Wth!?! Guess I'm just not destined to have ducks! I read that magpie ducks and drakes are identical as far as appearance goes. I separated them when I got home to see if one would quack and call out to the other and neither of them did. This guy was kinda out there. He told me the blue was the female and the male was the black. He then says "you know, let me just double check that they are in fact male and female." So he takes one over to the fence and I'm thinking Oh, maybe this guy knows how to vent sex them or something? Nope, he takes this metal stick with a string tied to it, hangs it over the back of the duck, waits for it to move a certain way and says "yup, this is a female!" I'm standing there like you have GOT to be kidding me! So he's sexing these things by an old wives tale!?! I was like ok fine, great, thanks a lot and left. I do want one of them so worse case is I rehome one. Another thing I'm kinda upset about is (and I didn't see this on them until I got home) is it looks like they're wing feathers were trimmed. They look awful and I'm wondering how to fix this?? Is there a way at all that they can grow back from this??? Pics below...

Other than them both being drakes and the wing issue I do love them. Just wish one would be giving me eggs.

Man you're having rotten luck! Although if they're a year old like he says the males should have drake feathers, unless they're molting. A little curly feather at the base of the tail. Only males get them.

Neither of these boys have the curly feathers. I heard some never get those. I'm going solely by their quacks at this point.

Oh yeah. but sadly this will be the last batch i hatch for awhile at least till the turkeys get served on the table i dont have room for much unless i sell some of the baby chicks. But this late in year i think i'll have to give them away if i hatch them any more.


Well we call my grandfather inlaw and see if he wants to eat the silkies and cochins since i couldnt get anyone to take them. He says yes and then an hour or so later i check e-mail and someone wants them. So i just gave the people the chicks i hatched out since the chickens are spoken for. So now i will be close to having room for all these eggs if they hatch out.

Don't feel bad for me, I do it to myself! LOL you would think I would learn by now. Unfortunately, when I want something, I want it right then and there and I do everything in my power to get it! Sometimes I'm very happy that I rushed into it and got what it was I was searching for, sometimes it comes back to haunt me. This is just one of those instances. :-/


More drama with the ducks today...I decided to let them out of the pen and be with the other ducks after I trimmed all the pointed "pins" off their wings. As soon as I let them out, the took off running down the hill, in the front yard, into the road and headed South down my road! I have never seen ducks run so fast unless something was chasing them. It's like they were thinking, Quick! Lets get out of here and back to our home! So I ran down the road across the street from them, crossed the street when I got ahead of them, and came towards them so they'd turn around and head back towards the house. Well that worked until about halfway back to my house, they took a sharp right and went right into the woods! Then my female duck started quacking and calling for everyone, they met up in the woods and now MY TWO were following them and letting them take charge! They have to come back into the yard. They're finally at the edge of the woods but haven't come back into the yard yet. I'm hoping my two are at least smart enough to come back to their pen tonight. If the other two wanna risk sleeping in the woods then so be it! I give up!

Oh no! Hope they come back!

Sorry Rancher I can't take a roo off your hands my neighbors would kill me. Though I'm not sure how they would know when they leave the music blasting 24/7 LOL

Thanks sunny I love the afro on Rhea too I tried to get a better pick of her cheek tuffs as well. She is a beautiful brabanter I'm surprised because her sister didn't fill out or grow and passed some time ago.

I'm Want my Crazy sunflowers to bloom they are so close I feel like they are going to stop on me LOL There were planted early April before that nasty snow storm hit LOL but they are tough!

I live in Rochester does anyone know of a good butcher that I could buy 1/2 a cow or a whole one if that is how it's done? I don't remember the breed but my dad got us one that we picked out years ago and they had dreadlock looking hair. I was so scared when I walked in cuz the bulls were so aggressive and ramming the stalls but I finely picked one.

If you can come down to Canandaigua, there's a farm called Beddient on the east side of the lake. Grass fed steer, and I know two different people that have ordered from them and said the beef is out of this world. I believe they have a web site... search beddient farm in canandaigua.

I did it! I got them all locked up for the night! WooHoo!!! They finally came out of the woods, looking for my two KCs, I steered them toward the coop, got them in, too them out and moved them to the Orp's run while I waited for my KCs to get in their pen. Moved the newbies in with my KCs after. I am so glad this day if over! Off to the feed store tomorrow to stock up on feeds for all the animals!
