I did overnights Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so I am still awake. So, I went down to check the baby duckehs. I brought my phone down for light. I don't know why I never thought of this before - it turns out that my flashlight app is perfect for candling eggs. It's a small-diameter, easily handled, cool light source, and works like a charm.

All but three Khaki Campbell eggs were clear - the drake hasn't hit his stride, which is fine, as he's only 5 1/2 months old. They could be crossbreeds with Rouen daddies, actually. I also have a few more Rouens on the way. I'll be putting up notices at Agway and TSC soon enough! I need to do that with a few turkeys, actually.

I did research that. I checked ours and the kid's beds and turned up nothing. Bedbugs also typically bite 3 bites in a row... dubbed breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not the case here. But the paranoia of bedbugs is there!

Every time I go somewhere(hotel) I leave my suitcase on the porch for a while. Not that is does anything but make me feel I have done something. Glad to hear that it is not bedbugs....

Morning Everyone,
Moved the silkie chicks out of the brooder and into the silkie coop yesterday, everyone seems to be doing fine and they look like they're having a blast running around in the pen below. I'm sure they didn't roost in the coop last night. For some reason my lavender pair don't always go up there at night. Well of all nights they chose last night and of course the chicks stayed down in the run too. Doesn't really matter, either way they are still locked up. Just odd that they do that. And now these chicks will follow in their footsteps I'm sure. Whatever....

Started digging a large hole yesterday out near my stream that trickles down from the mountain. I eventually want to get rid of that pool because it's just too small now for the ducks. They still use it but they can't actually swim in it. I'm sure their feet touch the bottom of it too. It doesn't take long to fill this pool with the little bit of water that comes down out of this pipe and just runs off into the woods. Someone on another thread posted a picture of this their ducks in this beautiful crystal clear pond. Well it turns out the water stays so clear because it is the run off from a spring (which I'm sure is the case with mine as well because it's runs all year round, event thru winter, never freezes) So this gave me the idea to do mine this way. I hope it works. Only problem is I'm having hard time directing the water elsewhere while I dig, so I'm digging thru water and mud, it clears up, I see how deep it is, I start digging again. It looks nice though. When I'm done I plan on placing some rocks at the bottom to keep it from getting so muddy looking every time the ducks get in there and splash around. Should help a little.


Oh and thanks for all the info on that hatchery! It was just one that I came across yesterday in my search and had never heard of them before. Looks like I'll be staying clear from that place! I think any hatchery is going to be ridiculous in price for the small order I want.

once I make room by filling the freezer we might be able to talk. I would love more khaki girls and turkeys.

OMG, I swear I think my silkie rooster has to go! I love him but man, he does not shut up! His crowing has gotten more and more obnoxious over the last few weeks. All day long too!

Oh and thanks for all the info on that hatchery! It was just one that I came across yesterday in my search and had never heard of them before. Looks like I'll be staying clear from that place! I think any hatchery is going to be ridiculous in price for the small order I want.

A friend of mine got a few chickens from a farm that is in Cortland. I think that it was 10 in total that we bought. I wasn't able to go, but he picked out 4 nice hens for me. Well it was supposed to be hens ( I think that the speckeld sussex is a roo). Anyway my friend deals with them all the time and it is supposed to be a great palce. I was told that they are trying to get out of chickens and they are going to concentrate on their other birds. I don't know the name of the farm, but if you or anyone is interested I will try to get the information.

I'd like to know the name of the farm in Cortland. I think Cortland is 1 1/2 hr away. My daughter went to college there many years ago but I can't remember how far. I won't be getting anything new until spring. I have a gorgeous Barred Rock Roo, an Amber Sex Link Roo and a couple Black Copper Marans Roo's I like to get rid of, all pure. The Sex Link is the only hatchery bird, the others are several generation breeder's. I've gotten rid of 6 hens and a roo, going this week end. Yea! Hopefully, this coming spring I can find Chocolate and Sweetgrass poults to attaching eggs.

Hi Everyone, I live in Central NY just south east of Syracuse near Cazenovia. I have 11 chickens with plans to add in the spring more chickens, possibly bantams and ducks, with possibly goats and horses to follow in the following years. I'm a new chicken owner but I'm now an addict. I wish that I had enough time to read all the posts, but my computer isn't fast enough. I hope that all are welcome?

I've only had my 7 birds since spring, so I'm a newbie at this, too...though I don't feel quite as green as I was back then. You learn as you go!
