NY chicken lover!!!!

Quote: Think of it this way ...if you put first put green gumballs & then blue gumballs in a gumball machine ..you put a quarter in ...out comes a RANDOM selection of gumballs
some green some blue or all green & or all blue ...theoretically you could still get a green gumball last ..even though you put those in 1st ...As they probably all shift when some are taken out . So for up to 4 weeks or more either Roo could be ferilizing the eggs
Clear as mud, right?

Clear to Me ....
That brings me to a question that I have. A while ago I had chicks hatch that I'm sure were of an EE roo. The hen hadn't been with the EE in over a month. Only a couple times did I see her with the BCM. So, could she have gone through the sperm from the BCM and she dip into some of the EE's sperm was still alive and well and able to fertilize an egg even though it was well over a month? After reading Marquisella's comment, I'm more confident that it happened that way. I had sold the EE roo and it was not on the property for well over a month before I even collected eggs.
Yes ...it is possible ...As no one know how the sperm gets chosen . to fertilize the individual egg .

I have thought of going to the fair 2 days ...
The 25th a sunday ...And another day during the week .
If we can settle on another day ...we can meet others who cant make it Sunday
Only Tuesday is out ...as they change animals / clean the pens those days
My Sis usually goes with us ...And I think she would be bored talking chickens ...( she has none )

Hey Rancher ! Breella ! ( prettty Eggs ) Lynzi ! are you going to the fair ?

Jlaw I think I am going to show some silkies too next year. I have a gorgeous Lavender pair that are show quality and a Porcelain Pair too.
I think we are going with buff. They was wanting white but i figured would be harder to keep the feet looking clean with white. I was googleing buff silkie hatching eggs and came across someone on here SundownWaterfowl that sells them or was. The website they had and info they gave was outdated so i guess i have to get with them.

Afternoon all. Must be crabby day because all of my customers were very crabby today. I felt like I should have been handing out xanax to mellow them out. Aparently a wait time of 20 minutes is too long and really means come back in five and ask if its ready. Now, Im good but I do have my limits.

My rir boys are finding their voices and like to proclaim themselves. Still sound funny though. The girls are trying to stay out of their way. Those tater tots are a handful and I cant wait to see what they are like all grown up. So far Roger and Bill havent really had any skirmishes. They are being raised together and I am hoping that they will continue the status quo so I can keep both of them.

I see Jlaw that you are interested in showing silkies. I dont show but my stock is from show/breeder lines. I have blues and blue/splash. Pm me if you are interested in pics or eggs. I also have a contact in PA who has buffs and she does a LOT of showing. Her birds are beautiful. I have one pen of her silkies I hatched out.

Speaking of silkies, Eowyn is back on eggs again. I swear that girl just wants to hatch and raise, hatch and raise. The babies are looking really good and have the whole package going for them. I cant wait to see them fully grown out.

Off to to womanly things.

Hello everyone,
Just got back from the zoo a little bit ago with my friend our kids. I think that's the most crowded I've ever seen it. Usually when we go its empty. I think my kids are getting sick of the zoo considering how fast they walked thru it. Didn't really care to stop and take time to look at anything. :-/

Candled my eggs one last time since lockdown is tomorrow. I think I lost one along the way somewhere. I see movement in all but one. Which is pretty good actually since I'm only hatching 6. I'd be happy if the rest all hatched. I am dying to see what I get from this hatch! Right now I'm working on getting my humidity up to 60+%. I have paper towels in the water dish and I just placed a sponge in there to help get it higher. I'm at 59%.

Gramma I do plan on going to the fair I just don't know which day yet. Waiting to see what day DH wants to bring the kids so I can plan my trip with my friend so we can go kid free and take our time in the chicken/rabbit exhibits.

This is how it goes...sperm can live in a hen up to 6 weeks. Yes, I've had it happen... The male deposits sperm in, whatever its called, I don't remember its name right now.. Its like a "well". The sperm used to fertilize eggs is drawn off from the top of the "well". So, it is possible that the 2nd roo that bred the hen, would have his sperm drawn off before the previous roos sperm. That is why, most people say, if a hen was bred by an unwanted roo, put her in right a way with the correct roo, and hopefully, the 2nd roos sperm will be used and not the 1st roos sperm. Of course, waiting 3 weeks is the minimum wait time so the 2nd roos sperm is built up. But, it is possible that they could mix somewhat, and then its anyone's guess which sperm will fertilize the next eggs. Clear as mud, right?

This seems like a really good explanation. I know it definitely can get mixed, too, because when my favorite hen was killed by a dog, I grabbed the last three eggs she had laid and tossed them in the incubator. Two hatched, and they had different fathers - one my buff orp, one my welsummer. They could have only been laid with a maximum of a one day gap. They could have also been consecutive.

Wow. All this talk of fertilization made my head hurt. I guess what I got out of it was keep them separate for about a month just to be sure.
Breella congrats on the new egg.
All 3 of my guinea hens have laid an egg this week. All 3 look different so I just have to figure out who's laying what egg.
JLaw my wife had TSC silkies once, the difference is amazing. I think she would get rid of me before she let the silkies go she has now :)
Lynzi be careful you don't get it too high and drown them. I candled last night finally and tossed 1 of 9 out. It was clear. My hatch day is next Friday and Danielle is already getting excited to see what color silkies she gets.
After finding the pig in the bantam pen again today I decided it was time to invisible fence it. Problem solved, no more pig under the fence and I can leave the door to the coop open without him getting into everything :-D

What would be considered too high? I read it should be between 60-70% days 18-21. Should I make sure it's not higher than 65?
