Where I live the regulations state the coop has to be 10 ft from my property line and 25' from neighbors house and can't be in the front yard. Now I lucked out because my lot is an acre and my house is sort of in the front corner of the acre though the front of my house is about 40 ft from the road. That gives me most of my back yard and a whole side yard to range my girls. Nothing in the rules says how far my electric netting has to be from the property line but my neighbors don't mind the hens so its all good. Of course it also says only 6 hens.......hope they don't stop by to count lol
No regulations on how far it has to be from my house, I don't think they care about that since their yours. More about the cranky neighbors some people have who don't like the smell? Tho I use deep litter method and there is no smell......heck my garbage tote is the worse smelling thing in my yard after I clean up after the dogs & clean litter boxes the hens don't even smell that bad after a year of DL

x2, my garbage smells wayyyy worse Thant coops. If anything my duck house/run smells the most out of any animal in my property but that's because they're run turns to mud the quickest and they spill their water all over the place. But the chickens? No smell there....

Plenty of apple peelings for chickens and horses making everyone happy. 

Yum. I got another 3 quarts and 1 pint of peach pie filling today. And 18 half-pints of pears canned up. Tomorrow, the rest of the peaches.

Anyway to tell if a chicken is in pain . ?
I have one of my 4 month old pullets ..who I think broke her leg at some point ..She kind of hop runs ...swings the leg ...more when she walks
When I feel the knee joint on one side it feels bigger . She doesnt mind if I touch it ..She is a little slower than the rest of the flock ...she does keep up ..with her hop run if she needs too .
I dont know how to tell if it hurts ...or if it is healed . I thought it was at 1st ...a growing spurt ..
I have been making sure she gets enough to eat ..

All finished with my platform for my silkie coop! I ended up going with 2 wheels to put under one end and since I have all this wood left over from other projects I used that for legs on the other end to keep it stationed and not rolling around around. Now if I can only find a level spot in my yard for it! LOL I was thinking of moving this to up against the house, along side my laundry room windows where I used to keep the rabbit cages in winter. Only because it has some overhang from the roof to keep snow off of it. Is that bad to keep it up against the house like that? I've read before that some towns have ordinances for chicken keeping that require you to keep your chickens a certain amount of distance away from your house. This part of my house is the furthest in the back, not like it's near my front door, side door, basement hatchway, etc. Is something that is ok to do?

1) Heavens - a coop might be a eye sore & stink - And they might have to actually see it !

I'm up entirely too early for a rainy Sunday.
Yesterday we split the bantam/duck pen in 2. Bantams on one side, ducks on the other. Today when the rain slows down we'll put the netting over the top. The cochins and silkies don't seem to mind but the ducks are not liking it at all, even though they have the water side of it.
It's still a little weird not seeing as many of my big girls anymore. I know once the barnies grow up, that'll change though.
Broom Hilda and the babies are doing great and I have 5 more eggs in the incubator.
I guess it's time to find some coffee and get this day started.

7 out of 11 chicks so far.

Life lesson, just because 11 eggs fit in there, does not mean that all the chicks can stand once hatched. I had to open the bator to remove some chicks. One of the 7 hatched with a foot that was closed, balled and looked bad. I went to work, waited and it's toes are flat now but it's main joint is still large. I may need to bandage it flat tomorrow but I am hoping that nature continues to take it's course with it.

This breeding is from my Dark Brahma Roo over my various females. All three from Frenchie, the Barred Rock hen I got from Lynzi look like baby barred rocks, identical markings on all three, with feathered feet. The long leghorn egg that hatched so far looks like a leghorn with bare feet. Of the three Red Sex Link eggs that hatched so far one is white/yellow with feathered feet, the other two are dark and look more like my Dark Brahma did when I brought him home.










I'm debating which chicks I should put outside with Pearl. She wants babies so bad. She's still sitting on some duds that I need to remove before they explode.

they are adorable, I have one with foot problems, I couldn't fix it, she is hopping around on one leg and trys to keep up with everyone but.....(sigh) she is so darn cute and lovable......

Yesterday I was looking at places to brush hog when I stop being sore from the last time I overdid it, and found a wild grape vine with nice grapes on it. So I dragged out the step ladder and picked a peck box of them. Of course the best ones were in the woods and higher than I could reach...but I made jelly with them! The girls got to have some of what I picked, they were unsure at first, but became enthusiastic after tasting. I wonder if I'll get blue eggs today? My hands, fingernails and the counters are all blue...and there is lots of stuff for the compost!

Ke5hde - Looks like the sun is starting to pop thru whil you finish up the work on your pen!

Glass - Nice find on the grapes! I still wish I had a way to get to some of these apple trees in my woods. Even if I got up there though, I'd probably be too short to reach them. The trees are pretty high. Grapes would be a nice find here, I feel like I'd be able to do more with those here than the apples. My kids LOVE grapes!

Hopefully the sun stays out so I can finish cleaning up what I started yesterday.

Howdy all. My netbook is acting up so I haven't been able to respond. I am on my tablet now. Anyways, update on Gladys. She is healing up well and her comb is black and drying up. I will let it continue that way. Nobody bothers her and she is happy in her ladies group. Things seem better with Bill left in the run while everyone else is out. Seems. To be cooling his jets a bit. I went in the coop this morning and caught him and carried him around while I was busy letting everyone out. He behaved himself when I walked inti the big run and put him down. I will continue working with him like this so he understands that I am the supreme ruler of his world and good rooster behaviour is mandatory. I now have two broody silkies. Ahrg. Have a good day

Well it's been a week since I set these 9 eggs. Just checked them, 6 have nothing going on in them.

So that leaves me with only 3. Not sure if I should let these go and hope again that at least 2 hatch, although even if 1 hatched I think I could still get away with placing it in with the two other chicks that just hatched. IDK. It's starting to get later and later in the year. Not sure if I should save another batch of eggs so just wait till spring and see what happens with these 3 eggs.
