NY chicken lover!!!!

hello to everyone-
hope everyone gets their problems fixed. in this day in age it seems neighbors are not nice anymore and no one sticks together for the greater good. I hope the united states doesn't stick their nose any further into Syria---it wont be good. we need to take care of our citizens and ourselves, become more a sustainable country. having chickens and ducks and other livestock is everyone on this websites way of becoming more sustainable. we do what we can, right????
signing off tonite as depressed as one can get about our country--d.

Right and that's why I'm just gonna see what happens first. If I like the outcome, THEN I'll get into certain colors and what not. I have no idea what I would get from breeding a lavender roo to a black hen and a white hen that are both frizzles, I'm sure some kind of funky color. But again if I like the quality of the bird, I'll get on track with breeding the right colors together. I also need to get my hatching down to a science! Just threw out my last three eggs. Done hatching for the year. No movement just blobs in there. So upset. Not sure what could have gone wrong so early on. I've never seen eggs like this. They always form good veins, show movement, and if anything something went wrong later on in the hatch. But not this early.

Oh and that sucks about your eggs. Hopefully your next hatch will be better. I still haven't gotten my hatches down to a science. I don't know that you really can either. I will have eggs and hatch 19/20 and then have some a week later where I get 4/ 20 then lose have them day.

Your just getting done hatching and I'm just starting again!!

Rancher--so sorry to hear about your barred rocks. I hope its nothing serious.

Breella--good luck with your challenge. Its disgusting that nobody minds their own business any more. Live and let live is my motto.I hope you win.

Hey Hen...hows the pharm biz? Happy Flu Season!

to be clear, it's not RockS, just the rooster. His comb is pale so it may be an internal thing. Cancer does come to chickens too. Everyone else seems fine, though I didn't have a closer look at the hen. She does get up and come running for scratch though. I've been withholding it so they eat more pellets, but it is strange that they don't seem to eat much. I will keep an eye on things.

It's never to late to get them!

I believe this is what BYC members call "enabling".....!

For everyone saying it sounds fishy, I think it is. Basically his words to me were that his SUPERIORS wanted an answer from me today. Yes, because every other backyard first timer that bought straight runs and everyone who had hatches over the summer isn't also trying to get rid of their roosters at the same time.

There is a childish part of me that wants to put a sign on my lawn that says "SAVE MY COCK" However I am trying to deal with this in the best, most mature way that I can. Our property is just under half an acre. There is a woman on the road between Rancher and I that has maybe 2-3 acres who has goats, there is a woman right on 290 that has three horses on a property not much bigger than ours. I know, he's just a rooster. If I had come to the conclusion of sending him to freezer camp myself (he is getting to be a VERY nice size) it wouldn't bother me much. It's knowing that it's someone else's idea of suburbia that would be driving it right now that makes me so mad! Amazing that just 100 years ago our government was paying for adverts for families to have backyard chickens.

There is something shady going on. When I called Town Planning back in Feb/March I was told I was zoned RA, the town map I just pulled up has me listed as Residential 3... This is just such crap. I want to move so bad and I don't have the means to.

Brella, I'm sorry you're dealing with that. My town has been giving one family a hard time. Just saw the article today. I hope they leaveme alone. I love my rooster crowing.

So I tried to comment but they want to access my profile and that ain't happening.

My comment was that codes have never been an issue because no one wanted to keep Back Yard chickens til now. Back Yard chicken keeping is on the increase and perhaps those who bought houses thinking they were safe from the crow of a rooster should have checked things out first.

Perhaps it's they who should have checked the zoning first.

Funny we lived in the city of Syracuse and when I complained about the yelling neighbors and their foul language I got told there is no law against yelling. This by the Syracuse, Police.

Breella , the cop who you spoke to is probably NOT and expert on codes and ordinances. He could very well be acting out of ignorance.

Do your homework and bring your paperwork. They won't take your word for it.

Well the mangey fox came back today again ..chickens all still in the run were making a danger noise...I look out the back door ...
there it is sneaking at the edge of our lawn ...in the field .
We will not have to worry about it again .. Im sure there are other predators still ...I wish I could get a dog ..for protection ...till then I guess I get the job of watching out !
