NY chicken lover!!!!

Well, little one eyed pullet didn't make it. She passed away last night. I guess the wound must have been just too severe for her to pull through, poor thing. Ah well, at least I know I tried.

so sorry - and yes - most of the time your aid works.

Momma chickie looks all white and fluffy from her hinney wash yesterday ... laid a nice egg today .... I'm checking her - just a little soil in the vent area again ? Not built up .... but will keep an eye on her. The actual vent seems totally clean - so maybe she is not squatting right and getting it on her feathers ? Yuck.

Thanks so much for your help.

I think she's just having really runny poop and it keeps dripping down into her feathers. Give her some yogurt and I bet it'll clear up :)

who cares??? In the 21st century we have this thing called "voice mail". Really futuristic stuff. Your voice gets recorded ....and saved for them to listen to

. Then they can return the call if they feel like it at their convenience . Amazing futuristic stuff

I don't even have VM! My house number just changed AGAIN for at least the 13th time in the last 5 years. I'm done setting up VMs. LOL If you need to get a hold of me, everyone who knows me knows the best way to reach me is thru text...How's that for futuristic.

Just remember that the next time YOU call someone and THEY don't answer.

Thats OK...I'm usually just calling so I can say I returned their call.

Pyxis ~ So sorry to hear about your hen!

I must say, the big coop I'm using for the hens now, that is soon to be the duck house isn't holding up as well I thought it was. Last week I fixed the nest box lid, today I fixed the coop door because two of the panels came off the door. Had to replace the screws with new/better ones. Instead of weighing it down with roof shingles before winter I think I'm just going to use one of the blue tarps I have since they are both not being used now. It''ll be lighter on the coop and keep it dry from the snow. I can even use my staple gun to staple if down if I want to and this way I wont have to worry about it blowing off in the wind or sliding off.

Can I ask what everyone and their brother is coming down to Lafayette for this weekend? I've gotten off my exit twice now and had to wait in a huge line of cars. Is it really just for the apple orchards? The Apple Festival doesn't start for another two weeks so it's not that.

Yup, it's apple picking time. I try not to go to the orchards on the weekends, but they don't have fritters at other times. But they do have caramel apples, and I may need one of them soon. Like Monday.

So sorry your pullet didn't make it. But yes, you did all you could.

Went to the Haudenosaunee Wooden Stick Expo. It was nice, lacrosse played on sacred ground, next to Onondaga Lake where the Iroquois Confederacy came to be...native dancers, lots of arts, fine stick makers...and there was food. The Expo marks 1000 years that the six nations "buried the hatchet." real history.

Did I mention I bought a Granny Smith tree? Do I need to plant another or will this Semi Dwarf be okay by it's self?

What I really came here for was to offer that one of our trees appears to be dead. I'm quite certain it's an Ash. I'm feeling really bad since it was a beautiful tree and near the front of our property. It's quite big, 40 - 50'. I have no idea how we will get it cut down. It's near the road.

We had trimmed some lower branches since they were hanging down onto DW's car.

It's the second tree we've had die completely in one season. The other I think may have been an Elm and is near the chicken coop. Why couldn't the blasted Buckthorns die?

Rancher, if your tree is close enough to the road or power lines, sometimes those guys will just cut it down for you. As far as cross pollination goes, I like to look at the stark Bro. Catalog, they tell you what you need to get.to pollinate something else, which starts a domino reaction so you need about 20 trees. Now I'm curious, maybe I can google. I have heard that crab apples are universal pollinators...and I frequently see single trees in the orchards flowering early, or a different color...
