NY chicken lover!!!!

GRRRR stupid hens this is not what I like to see. after buying nest boxes and building some out of litter tubs. May have to make some a little bigger I guess.
I see it now ! they like the private one ...is it because you now have turkeys in with them ?
also are your nest boxes private like this ?

Anyone in the area have BBS orps for sale (chicks or started pullets)? I purchased 8 chicks over the summer, looks like most of them are roos~!

My luck!

Welcome! I plan on trying a go at another hatch from my Splash roo and buff orp hen. Not sure what colors I'll get from that pairing but if I end up with any blues or blacks you're more than welcome to some. I planned on trying to hatch and raise thru winter to have pullets available in the early spring. By then I will definitely know who I would like to keep in my own flock and who I would like to rehome.

It's been over a year since I had orpington chicks and was doing some research today as to how early you can usually tell if they are hens or roos. Most people said by the time they reach 4-6wks you should be able to tell. Mine is going to be 6wks tomorrow. Pullet?? Or will I have to wait a little while longer?

nope sorry.

Yes this is what they do, I think everyone's suggestions are good just see what works for you! Good luck. I must say cute pic though LOL.
Good Afternoon All!
Well so far since having the poultry netting the only bird that likes to fly out is my Buff Orp. The others stay in and seem to enjoy it. I've been placing my rabbits in there with them, one a day otherwise they'll fight. Yesterday I placed my angora in there to run around and get some exercise, went out there later in the evening to find it missing. He obviously found a spot near the bottom and went under it. He's much too big to fit thru the holes of the fence. Found him hopping around down on the side of the yard, couldn't catch him of course and it was getting late. He stayed out all night and I was able to catch him this morning. Not sure what's keeping the predators out of my yard but he's lucky he wasn't eaten. I'm beginning to think there's a creature in the woods keeping all the predators out because I just can't get over how I've had a duck out all night, two rabbits now, the coop door left open night by accident, and not a single thing has gotten to them. Of course it'll happen now that I've said it.

4 of the baby bunnies go to their new homes this weekend. Chicks are getting big and almost ready to go in with the silkies. Then when the Orp chick is a little bigger I'll try placing it in with the bigger girls. I may even wait until it's full grown though knowing how much bigger Gru is than the hens. I would really hate for something to happen to this chick. I'm pretty sure it's going to look more like an orpington than BR, and it's looking blue now, not black. I've seen pictures online of blue orpington chicks and they look just like this little one did when it hatched. So I'm going with blue for the orp and the silkie chick is definitely black.

So far from the way the feathers fall I say pullet but as we know 4months is usually a good time to tell. Her comb and wattle look like my young orpinton though she is 3 months. Tell you what though she is beautiful!!!!

So your Buff is flying over the net LOL there is always one who will!

There might be a dog that wonders close to your property that is keeping predators back. Also someone could be trapping as well. Glad all is well for you on that front. So far so good here minus the hawk but that's life, everyone one goes back in the coop until the coast is clear.

Good luck!

THANK YOU! THAT'S what I keep forgetting to ask everyone about the predators staying away! I have a male dog and I also have this three legged yellow lab that comes up to my property every week and marks everything in site! It annoys the crap outta me, I usually shoo him outta the yard, but can all that marking be keeping the night animals away? It's the neighbors dog from way down the road, he hobbles up here, and hobbles back down to his home. Checks for traffic too as he's crossing the street. He's a really friendly dog so I really don't care that he's doing it, I worry more about him getting hit by a car which looks to me like it may have already happened.
