NY chicken lover!!!!

Evening all. The game cam has caught a raccoon poking around the last couple of nights. Dh may have to eliminate that problem. Fortunately the coops sit up off the ground so the coon cant get access. Dont need any problems. Have a good night all.

For nest boxes i jave 4 of the grey ones from tsc that mound right to the wall. I also had two tidy cat litter ones that they didn't use so i took out today. I leave wooden eggs and plastic golf balls in them. I think turkeys just go in and out of coop too much not letting them rest as they lay.

I had 2 lay under that sled and another lay in the little brooder/grow out box behind it. I dontmnd as long as i know where to look.

Turkeys wasnt suppose to be in big coop but they desided to sleep with girls and fluffed up when wife tryed to move them. Next year they get a coop with big run no free rangeing really. Dont like toms chasing my roo and worried of him trying to mount the hens later. So one rea of yard for turkeys only.

I thought that I read that it isn't good to keep Turkeys and chickens together? Something about black head disease? Does anyone else have turkeys? I was thinking that in the future I might like to get some.

Yes they can get blackhead. It kills they're liver then them. I haven't heard any out breaks around here so hoping they don't get it. We never got the run going on small coop so they already ran around with chickens some. I don't know how long black head takes to kill though.

Next year they get a better set up just for them. I forgot we was getting them so wasn't ready for them really.

You do know that vinegar is a good and much safer disinfectant don't you? White distilled might be much less potent.

thanks for the tip, I did not know. I hose down and scrub everything 1st then I used a very mild solution of the chlorox--(lite spray job-couldn't smell it at all after an hour) I have both apple cider and white in the cupboard! thanks!

Busy busy busy around here. Snowmobile season starts early around here. Grass drag season is in full swing so we spend most weekends at the races.

Finally got a floor put in the outside grow out pen and moved the 2 silkie mommas and their 3 chick's into it. Everyone is getting along fine surprisingly.

Here's the coop/run made from the bottom half of the duck house.

That is what I want to build for my three girls, wanna make that 1hr 40min drive and help build LOL J/K it looks great.

Glad that raccoon isn't causing a problem, hope you can eliminate it before it starts.

Lynzi = thanks I love taking pics of everyone it was hard though the hawk was hardcore over the property so they were chickens were hiding in the coop and run so I felt like my poor roo didn't get much to eat since he was always looking up. Thanks he is such a good boy we got lucky but he's gentle and nice to my girls scared warey of people but he isn't disrespectful to me or my son so all is well. But most of them came running out of the coop when they saw me along with the roo of course. The silkie coop was just lazy today. My leghorns are getting too big but there is a part of me that doesn't want to split up the buff orp from them so i'm trying to wait till she is big enough to go in the big coop and give the silkies and brabanter some rest from them. Yes dogs do help from what people tell me I mean we have raccoons, possums, other dogs as our main issue but my two big ones mark up everything and chase everything away.

Jlaw - I hope it works out for you, Can you lock the girls up for a day and scavange the yard and make sure they aren't laying anywhere else and maybe block everything off? Turkeys can be the problem as well, but as long as there are no bullys you should be okay until you can get things changed.

Quote: 1/2 & 1/2 Comb looks like a pullet ...wattle looks like a Roo..what is its temperament ? Is it docile ? or did it fight you ? probably a pullet

Well Limpy was a Roo ...We processed 3 of our Roos today .
I cant see paying someone to do it ...even though it traumatizes me ..
which it does alot ..I shed tears for them & miss them ..I get too attached I guess .
It will be alot quieter tomorrow & food will last a little longer ...2 of them weighed 4 1/2 pounds after processing
Im sure the young hens will appreciate the peace ...young Roos are always trying to grab them ..

Sally8 has chickens with turkeys and had no problems. I've read about black head but not how its spread.

It's spread by the poo from what I read. I've looked into it before and so far my turkeys don't show any signs of it but keeping an eye on them. I was worried about my tom cause his neck and head wasn't red like normal. Then I found out he makes it flare red by blood rushing to the areas when he's upset or impressing a lady.
