NY chicken lover!!!!

1/2 & 1/2 Comb looks like a pullet ...wattle looks like a Roo..what is its temperament ? Is it docile ? or did it fight you ? probably a pullet
It is very docile, I haven't seen any roo-like behavior towards the other chick. I think it's still too little to fight anything LOL But just figured I'd see what people's thoughts were on the comb. I'll have to go back and see if I can find pics of my BO at 6wks of age to compare. I thought she was a roo for the longest time because of how her comb wattles developed quicker than the others.

Well steaming the eggs didn't seem to help none then again the one egg I tried so far didn't seem quite done yet. It didn't fall apart but it did stick to it and almost come apart. Not to mention steaming eggs took like 30 min. That is using a plug in steamer not a basket over water on stove. funny thing is steamer said 15-18 on side of it I put in for 25 checked and it would be done for most but I like mine starting to turn greenish yolk so I put in for another 7ish min I think it was.

Is it common for a hen to poo in nest box? I had one do that yesterday. Today I had one laying under the sled for awhile I went to check for an egg but no egg she made happy egg song and all. So I went to talk to her about the lack of egg and tieing up the makeshift nesting area when I noticed she had dry poo clumped under her vent. Vent area was fee I saw her poo. I cut the dryed stuff off and some extra feathers. I only got 8 eggs yesterday I max out at 9 but after seeing her sit then move makes me wonder if something is maybe wrong with her? Her vent leaked clear fluid so maybe she is about to lay. I hope she not egg bound. Googleing egg bound now.

Morning All,
I'm ready for a nap...had to be up super early this morning to get my son off to school in time and bring my daughter to a doctor appt in Syracuse. I am not a morning person. 6am is too early for me but I could never sleep in past 8. And yes I'm sure "sleeping in" would be considered 6am for many of you.

Need to hit up the feed store again later for more rabbit food. While I'm there I'm also going to have to pick up a waterer for the silkie coop. I wanted to go back to hanging the larger gallon sized waterer in their run yesterday but I can't find the red bottom to it anywhere. I had removed them and just used the bucket part of it over the summer and now they're gone. I don't think I would have thrown them out but who knows.

Dog needs a bath before his trip to the vet tomorrow, he STINKS! Maybe I'll give him a trim too while I'm at it.

Hope everyone enjoys their day!

Well go check for eggs and I swear my chickens hate me. One was in the coop nest box earlier but no egg and not wet on inside at all. This is a different chicken than the one from under the sled. To top it off I found a broke/eaten egg under the bush the like to laydown under. building turkeys a coop this week don't care how it looks or anything but they are out of the coop and ladies are locked up till I get at least 5 eggs for a few days till the remember hey this is the egg spot.

OK, here is what I do to hard boiled eggs to get them to come out of the shell easier & be the right color. I bring the water with the eggs in to a boil. Set a timer, lower heat to just a soft boil, and let boil for 12 minutes for large eggs, less for smaller (10 min) . Then remove from stove & put in cold water and keep the water cold. When I can handle them, I crack them so the shell has several cracks in it as if I was going to peel them at that time.l I let them sit in the cold water. The cracked shells allow the water to seep into the egg between the membrane & the egg contents. After an hour or so, I never timed this so it might be longer, anyways when the eggs are good & cold, I shell them. Usually the shells peel off easily. Once in a while one stays tough to peel. If you leave them in the refrigerator overnight, they peel even easier.

The green yolk is due to overcooking.

Hens poop in the nest usually because they roost on the edge of the nest box if they are raised up. If I have a poopy nest box, I'll either put it on the floor, or make it lower than the roosts are, or if they still roost on the sides, of course, they always roost with their butts over the box, not the other way around, I try to use a box that they can't stand on the edges. They are hard to find, so mostly I just dig out the poop every morning.

Probably a dog. They usually just kill for fun. If it was a fox, etc. you wouldn't find the body, and a racoon will eat part of it & leave the rest.

I'll have to try this. We were doing the baking soda in water thing. And I keep a pack of eggs set aside in the fridge, so we have older eggs to work with, at lest when there is excess eggs.
I have an Ancona that poos every time she lays. Just her. And of course the June chicks are sleeping/pooping in the nest box with momma Luna and the new babies.

Anyone ever use one of these http://www.amazon.com/Fox-Run-Egg-P...=1364645996&sr=8-1&keywords=egg+piercing+tool I came across it as I was looking on how to hard boil fresh eggs and found this site http://www.rurallyscrewed.com/15551/2013/03/29/eggs-friday-how-to-hard-boil-a-super-farm-fresh-egg/ .

I'm going to try the pin prick and see if it works then I may buy one of those things to make it easier and faster. Wife wont hard boil any eggs any more.

Actually trying the easier method of steaming them. Eggs are probably 4 days old but I've had problems with them before that old so see how this works let ya know in 25.

On Amer's test kitch. they said folks don't put enough salt in the water when they boil eggs. Now I make sure there is lots in the water and some vinegar as well. So far no prob.

Desiree sorry for your lost yeah sounds like a dog

Jlaw I hope your egg situation works out, I can't wait to see your turkey coop. I just boil my eggs for like 15mins usually a good result.

Stony awesome article we start next year. Honestly I have someone to do it but I'm having someone teach me how as well.

No eggs again I know I just put in the light but all my patients gets used up at work so that I have none at home LOL
