NY chicken lover!!!!

It's been over a year since I had orpington chicks and was doing some research today as to how early you can usually tell if they are hens or roos. Most people said by the time they reach 4-6wks you should be able to tell. Mine is going to be 6wks tomorrow. Pullet?? Or will I have to wait a little while longer?

Pretty! She looks like a pullet to me!

Ill chime in on the chickens and turkeys. I never had a problem with turkey illness but no longer keep the adult turkeys with the chickens. I have royal palms. I have had them kill escapee chicks and juvenile chickens. I have also had problems with them attacking my roo. I'm not sure what happened they started out fine but then I locked the turkeys up because they kept landing on my fiances jeep and scratching the paint. When I let them back out as a group they were mean to the chickens. I do have one juvenile that is in with them right now and is fine. There is also one full grown hen that escapes once in awhile. The problem with her is she tries to establish herself in the pecking order but she's so much bigger I'm afraid shell hurt my smaller chickens.

Marquisella,

Sorry for the delay in getting you this information on preserving apples to use for later baking recipes, but my sister-in-law just sent it this a.m. She gave me a big jar last Christmas along with pre-mixed dry ingredients for an apple cobbler and it was really good. Makes a nice gift for someone who likes to bake, or maybe someone who is just very busy but has young kids who like sweets.

Odor Abatement
The odor-bearing fluid, or musk, is amber in color,
oily and slightly volatile (which chemically speaking,
means it stays around a long time). The musk can
temporarily blind and stun those who are sprayed in
the face. Other symptoms are watery eyes, nasal
irritation and nausea.
Asthmatics may also experience
breathing problems.
If nothing is done, the odor can last two to four
months. Bathing in tomato juice has been the stan
dard remedy for skunk odor. However
, chemically
tomato juice does nothing to neutralize the odor. After
a while, the nose blocks out the skunk odor due to
“olfactory fatigue,” which tricks the nose into
smelling the tomato juice instead of the skunk odor.
Following are several products developed to reduce
skunk odor on people, pets, in homes and on clothing
that work either chemically or mask the odor.
Homemade Solution
If a person or pet is sprayed, take action quickly
to remove the odor. If spray enters the eyes causing
irritation or temporary blindness, first flush the eyes
with cold water. Then apply the following homemade
remedy, which was first reported by chemist Paul
Krebaum of Lisle, Illinois, for use on pets.

One quart of fresh, 3 percent hydrogen
peroxide solution (use fresh, old hydrogen
peroxide turns into water)

¼ cup of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)

1 or 2 teaspoons of liquid dishwashing soap
that is known for its degreasing qualities, or
liquid laundry soap
The first two ingredients form an alkaline
peroxide that chemically changes the musk into
sulfonic acid, an odorless chemical. The soap breaks
down the oily skunk essence and makes it more
susceptible to the chemicals. The mixture must be
used after mixing and cannot be stored. Although the
chemicals in this formula are harmless, be cautious
and keep away from the eyes, nose and mouth of
people and pets. Do not use on clothing – it may
discolor the fabric.
Always mix this solution in a large, open container
.
Do not put in a closed container or store because it
may explode. The mixture will bubble because of the
chemical interaction. Use the entire mixture while
it is still bubbling. Wear rubber gloves, apply the
solution, work it into a lather and leave it on for
5 minutes or longer until the bubbling ceases. Make
sure to remove jewelry
, as skin may be sensitive to
the chemical reaction with metal. When washing a
dog, wash the body first and then the head to keep
the dog from shaking off the mixture. If odor still
remains, repeat two or three times. Then treat with
normal shampoo. Do not use heat, such as a hair
dryer
, as this can cause the remaining skunk oil to
set in on hair
, fur or skin. People can take a shower
between treatments to further remove the odor.
Household Treatments
If the odor is inside or under the crawlspace of
your home, the area will need to be thoroughly aired.
Using fans will help. Wash or apply deodorants to the
source of the odor. Use air fresheners to mask resid
ual odor in the air. If the odor is indoors, change the
air filter for the furnace/air conditioner as odors may
be trapped in the filter and recirculated. Multiple
deodorant treatments may be needed whenever odors
penetrate porous surfaces such as wallboard, concrete
or unpainted wood. Sometimes removing co
ntaminated
materials is the only solution.

Not that it fought others...Did it resist you picking it up etc ?
Hens tend to be more submissive...Roos tend to be resistant to being held ...etc

No, not at all. I mean, they scramble about when I try to "catch" them. And what's funny about this one is when I DO pick it up, all it wants to do is climb up my arm to sort of get closer to me when I have my arm out and I'm trying to get a picture of it while holding it. Even when I have it two hand cupped holding it it climbs up my arms to be closer. It's so cute!

Tomato Juice! I don't know what it is about that stuff but it WORKS! I had a golden retriever growing up and the night it got sprayed by a skunk I used about 4 large cans/containers of it, poured it all over the dog, rubbed it in and all over her, she was back in the house that same night!

Xovan,

That really STINKS! (Bad pun!) Have never been sprayed myself, but have had 2 dogs, our cat and even my horse get the "Treatment au Pepe le Pew." One time, the skunk sprayed the dog directly against the kitchen wall of our cottage. It was horrible, so I feel for you. Nature's Miracle works half way decent, and just frequent shampooing and washing with warm, soapy water help. Like most horrible things, it will get better with time.

Did the skunk actually approach your dog? We had a skunk that showed aggression several years ago. At one point it was clawing at our basement window, trying to get in at the dogs. Creepy. It had either rabies or distemper and had to be shot. My point being, is your dog vaccinated?

We had our one dog get sprayed a few times we tried the tomato juice route didn't work. We settled on peroxide and baking soda so my wife says.

Well this one of my brooder/grow out areas but my son's hen Hero desided its the pent house nest box. She also doesn't believe in sharing if another lady goes in to see what she's doing she jumps out and starts making egg song along with angry chicken song.

Guess my 12x12 nest boxes aint big enough for this girl lol.
