Every good online community forum should have its very own "Gramma." I'm glad we've got you.

It may not be Photo Friday yet, (boy, do I wish it was Friday), but I took this pic of my Delaware, "Pringles", this afternoon. I thought it came out kinda cool. Now I know what the books mean when they tell you look for "clear eyes and a nice, waxy comb" when you're purchasing birds. Look at those fire engine red wattles and her comb! No eggs yet! C'mon Pringles!

Happy Day all. Enjoy the glorious weather. I've taken up enough space here for the afternoon!!!!

Okay silly questin here...Why aren't my chickens molting? My marans are a little over a year and the rest are about 7 months. Are they too young to molt or are they just late? I'm still getting 5-8 eggs a day out of 9 hens I'm not useing any special light, just letting nature do it's thing. Do they skip the first year or will it happen later?
My guess is they are, just not to the point you would notice. Proper diet can help and you may be doing something right. IMO. Mine seem fine too. Orps, BR's and CR's not so much and they're not laying good either. Marans aren't either but then they've been penned up later too.

Oy, you guys have been chatty! BYC wasn't working for me last night, so just caught up on 100 or so posts.
I too am of the 1981 vintage, guess we are middle of the pack on here! Never would have guessed CountyBoy as 16 with the quality birds. Good job kid! lol
Molting: In my 2 years of experience, the first year seems to have a mini-molt mid-summer before they start laying. Then lay right through fall and winter. Some of the 1 year old birds are molting. The Anconas and EE hen have stopped completely, Anconas look terrible. EE stopped a couple months ago but looks fine, so don't know what is up with her. Luna the blue Orp is broody, but looks like she might have a few feathers missing. Her black sister is still laying and looks fine. The 2 NH hens are still laying, although the little hussies are bare-backed.
Took my 4 roos to the Amish processor this morning, will only cost me $10 plus the gas to check in, drop off, then pick up. Still better than the $30 and longer trip for the other place. He is only set up for deer at the moment, so was going to process in the house/driveway to keep them out of the shop. Will be picking them up around 7 tonight.
Today was rough for me. I have been on furlough since Oct 1 and it is really bothering me. Then I get home this morning and the one horse decided he wanted out to pasture NOW, so ran through 3 adjoining paddock fences, stopped in the stall that had the chicken feeder and a stack of hay, licked the feeder out (including oyster shell), knocked over the hay stack, broke the one roost on the feeder, then galloped around the back lawn tearing up the wet grass. They are staying out to pasture tonight, as I need to replace paddock fence and hook up a different electric fence charger. The current one was fried during the Labor Day storm. Thankfully still had my old one at my parent's, hope it runs hot! And all I can think is none of the would be a problem if I was going to work.....

Lap - sorry to hear you had a rough day.

I want a horse more than anything but my husband keeps saying he would rather me get a horse when we have a house of our own someday with LOTS of land where we could house it on our own property instead of boarding it somewhere. When I hear stories like this I just tell myself, ok maybe I can wait out a little while longer until the kids are older and I dont have two little kids AND all these animals to care for.

Evening All,
Well I'm still not sure what's up with the bigger ladies and gent, they've been spending a lot of time inside the coop/run instead of out in the chicken yard. Have yet to see a hawk or anything. It's almost like they're going thru the worst part of their molt and are embarrassed to come out! LOL poor Stella stays in the coop even in the morning when I go out there to open the door and let them out. I open the door, everyone but her comes out, I open the nestbox door and she's standing there on one of the roosts looking at me like "Get OUT!" It's kinda funny.

Still no eggs from my silkie going on 7 months old. The frizzles are 20wks this week. Do bantams take a while to start laying like silkies do?

Keep forgetting to mention, I've been working on a small and simple website that just consists of the animals we are raising, etc here in the country life setting if anyone cares to take a look it's listed on my profile page on here.

Just took a peek at your site -- lots of fun to read how your family's country life started, and the accompanying photo's are great. Nice job, Lynzi!

Thanks! Just something I wanted to start seeing I have all this free time on my hands now. It's just a free site so I'm not sure it'll get much traffic but I plan to use to help my friend out with her rabbitry as well when it comes time to having bunnies for sale and such. It'll be easier to send or post the link somewhere than to constantly have to send photos like we've done in the past.
