NY chicken lover!!!!

Good morning,

Jlaw I'm sorry for your lost that sucks.

Lynzi & Stony a spoiler alert for the aliens that's funny LOL

Chickens are good, one was flying up in my face like hurry up and feed me girl, I'm tired went to the bar around the corner last night it was interesting. The babies that were introduced to the group are doing great, the larger of the three seem to protect the other two. Everyone is off tearing up my backyard.

I'm excited though my Dad is home from the hospital and just in time for the Walking Dead yayyy, I can't wait. I got some homemade tomato sauce I think I will make baked ziti for the special occassion.

Well I lost one of my ee chicks last night in the small coop. I've been running a heat lamp in there cause they was feathering out but it looked like they was all good so I left it off last night. Today I find one dead no feathers missing or anything just laying on ground dead in there. Think i'll just lower the watts down to an 85 watt bulb and wean them off it I guess.

Got the 12 gage and 30-06 loaded in safe now waiting for a dog or fox to come along.

OMG I was out on the deck drinking my coffee and I see my roo circling one the hens and shaking his wing at the same time. I definitely laughed it looked so funny. The best part is that my hen was totally not interested and proceed to eat the garden I've let them have at much of the garden. I'm building a new and bigger garden. That's what I like to see in the morning not TV.

Miquwid am glad your dad is home and I love just watching the birds they are so comical at times will usually change a bad mood to a good one.

Jlaw sorry about your EE chick.

Nice but breezy here this morning today will be a day of baking around here and getting stuff ready for next week no work at office for the aging but do have a class tomorrow night so not like I get the whole day off but that's ok cause I can at least sleep in.

Hello. I am in Texas. I am having the worst time trying to post anything. So I a replying here. I love my chickens. I started 3 years ago with 4-3 month old Buff Orpingtons. Miss Priss,Blondie, and the twins Omelet and Scrambled.

I just met someone on the "What are you canning now?" thread who is in Conroe, TX.

Well welcome to BYC sorry your having a problem with post. Are you doing it from your phone or computer? Those are some cool names. What part of texas?

Good you were able to trade! Sorry for your roo. That is good your sussex pulled through though.
The Dels your ordering are they eggs or chicks?

Lynzi our ladybugs don't make it long in our house the spiders or the cats or dogs kill them. Only moths seem to be around and only one or two. Well if you win the lotto you could send a duck or silkie my way!!!!

They will be chicks.

I don't understand why BYC has a spoiler alert. If someone can't handle the images of dead chickens then they better not own chickens. Nothing against you JLaw. I just don't understand BYC's thinking. Dead chickens are a fact of chicken raising. Funny....I just wrote an article about that

Because there are children on this forum and some folks can't handle the sights.

A short time ago, the pastor was mentioning some medical stuff and one of the young girls passed out twice before she got to the door. He has since been careful not to get too technical.

However what I don't understand is that while the original post shows no pictures the side bar "Recent Images in this Thread" shows the pictures anyhow. THAT to me makes no sense.

AS FOR Jlaws, situation I agree that it is most likely a dog. The fox that snagged my Sussex took her and ran off. It dropped her when it saw me coming. She had no wounds that I could find and did recover. Though I'm aware Stony has more experience with foxes.

Lynzi would you share your Apple fritter recipe with me? Everyone around here is on an Apple kick and now they all want apple fritters.

Rancher so sorry about your Rooster. So glad you went to the doctor to have the chest pain checked out it is not something to fool with.

Jlaw sorry about your birds.

Tonight I made a Homemade apple pie didn't even cheat by using the canned stuff and it is the best apple pie I have tasted in forever. I normally cheat and use the roll out Pillsbury crust and canned pie filling but decided this year to do a crust from scratch and actually pick apples off of my trees that I normally just let fall off and the deer eat them. I have 5 different types of apple trees plus we also have crab apple and wild apple trees. I used a mixture of tart and sweet apples and it was delicious. Now that it is starting to cool down I love to bake.

Not sure who else on here has pigs I know I saw some one did but I have Hereford Pigs and the crazy things act like dogs they even wag their tails when they see me and come running up to be scratched. Today I was scratching the male whose name is Bacon and he sat down the next thing you know he is falling asleep and almost falls over but woke up as he started to lean LOL!

Today one of the teeny boppers graduated and is now a layer an olive egger. That is 2 new layers in 2 days soon should have a bunch of the teeny boppers laying.

Ok am off to get ready for Midterms this week.

I wrote to Carol Bradford about my neighbors apples and pears and she says they're fine to eat. So I expect I'll be peeling pears, though I have no idea what I will do with them. I'll have to look at the recipe books.
My side still hurts so I don't do much. I do have a lot to do though.

You might like to put a thermometer in there and monitor the temps. Nights are colder so that may have been it. I have plans to put two lights in the brooder so if one goes out the other will still be there. Even the brand new lights don't always last.

Keep in mind you can order lower wattage red heat lights on line. I am sorry for your loss.

yeah I have the 120watt they sell at tsc then I have 85 watt that I use when its little cooler in the house but they are starting to not need a light. Keeps me from having to move light up and down I just change bulbs out.

Well I went checking yards and I didn't see any feathers at peoples houses or yards walked most the fields and grape vines around me. I'm still missing 4 birds bodies so wondering if it could have been a pack of foxes we do have coyotes but they cross further down the road normaly neighbor said.

Tried to get some barred rocks from natureberry farm but they're site's bill needs paid. I only have one hen I can use for sexlinks next year and so far these ee's are a pain to tell which is which even at month and half old.

Going to get some traps once I get paid.
