NY chicken lover!!!!

yeah I have the 120watt they sell at tsc then I have 85 watt that I use when its little cooler in the house but they are starting to not need a light. Keeps me from having to move light up and down I just change bulbs out.

Well I went checking yards and I didn't see any feathers at peoples houses or yards walked most the fields and grape vines around me. I'm still missing 4 birds bodies so wondering if it could have been a pack of foxes we do have coyotes but they cross further down the road normaly neighbor said.

Tried to get some barred rocks from natureberry farm but they're site's bill needs paid. I only have one hen I can use for sexlinks next year and so far these ee's are a pain to tell which is which even at month and half old.

Going to get some traps once I get paid.

jlaw

what does that mean? They do have a phone don't they? If there stock is hatchery you could just order from one, right? I expect to order eggs from Jeremy to replace my rooster at least. I have to worry that the older breeds are losing out to the newer Lavenders and others.

I should get on those BR's right now.

ttfn,

It looks like their web site isn't working, Bummer, I like seeing what they have in.

Jlaw, Last I looked they had salmon faverolles, some ducks and I think some barred rocks. I have Jim and Sandy's email if you want to get a hold of them.

Sorry for everyones chicken losses.

Miquid, glad your dad is coming home!

Rancher, hows the chest and arm pain? Have you thought about seeing a chiropractor, It could be a rib out of place.

Having x rays tomorrow. Still quite sore considering it's been over a week since the accident.

Nothing keeps a body prisoner like old age.

Thanks for thinking of me.

Because there are children on this forum and some folks can't handle the sights.
children number 1 should NOT be allowed on this site. Wait, that aren't allowed by the rules. The rules CLEARLY state you must be 13 to be on this site. But I digress. ....... children should NOT be sheltered from real life.
So to doubly make it clear. Children are NOT allowed on this site via the rules of the forum

A short time ago, the pastor was mentioning some medical stuff and one of the young girls passed out twice before she got to the door. He has since been careful not to get too technical.

However what I don't understand is that while the original post shows no pictures the side bar "Recent Images in this Thread" shows the pictures anyhow. THAT to me makes no sense.

AS FOR Jlaws, situation I agree that it is most likely a dog. The fox that snagged my Sussex took her and ran off. It dropped her when it saw me coming. She had no wounds that I could find and did recover. Though I'm aware Stony has more experience with foxes.
you got lucky. Foxes generally kill while grabbing the bird. They grab it and do the death shake. Your fox was probably bringing your hen back for her young to slowly kill

Well I have an update i'm like 99% sure it was the neighbors dog. My rooster was going off with weird sounds I've never heard before so I check on it and I see a rot mix (had white chest) on edge of my yard in the long hay. So I go in and get my gun and come back out but it's gone I don't see it any where. I fired a round into my barn and it took off across the street. So I go to the guys house and ask him do you have a black and white dog. He said yes so I told him its loose. "again" was the reply so I said yes and I lost 8 birds yesterday if the dog goes on my property again i'm going to kill it. As I was walking away it started barking I told it to shut up then it came after me and chased/followed me across the street into my yard barking and growling hair up. while I yell for wife to get my gun it finaly turns around and runs back to it's house. We call the sheriff and they come out and we explained it all to him. He goes and talks to the guy and the guy claims theres another rot running around here and that I threatened him. Cop didn't buy it he told him if he see his dog loose any where he's calling animal control and he informed him I have the right to kill his dog if it's on my property. So for now on i'm not talking to neighbor just calling the sheriff.

I also talked to my other neighbor that owns the over grown yard inbetween me and the street if I could cut it down he said he will his tractor has just been broken. He's going to borrow one to cut it next year he's ok with me cutting it down. I'm still going to get some security cam but now I know where to point them.

Jlaw sounds like you have a bad neighbor and unfortunately are going to have to kill his dog as he will not keep his dog under control. But you need to do whatever it takes to keep your flock safe

This is true. I've learned this the hard way with my neighbor's dog. I was going to kill him this last time but his owner showed up. Now I'm going to scare him with animal control but I'll be waiting for the dog to come back because it's apparent they just don't care. Next time even if the neighbor shows up I'm getting rid of the dog.

Jlaw sorry that you have a bad neighbor well at least you now know what you have to do to keep your flock safe and your neighbor has been warned.

Thanks I can't wait to see him and watch the walking dead tonight.

My girls are tearing up the garden I'm so excited I'm going to have a bigger one next year.

Since my son has no school tomorrow he's going to help me rearrange the backyard.

So my hen was laying an egg and I noticed the rooster watching over her and seemingly keeping everyone away while she did that. She's the top hen of the flock and you know she's going to lay an egg because she makes a big loud fuss and runs to the egg box, then comes out with a cute little song. It's my fiesty barred rock.

Some folks don't realize roosters play an important role in the flock.

Today I witnessed my BM rooster break up a hen fight. A BM hen and CR hen were getting into. He came up and got between the two and that was that.

Plus with at least eight roosters on this place it is generally quite.
