NY chicken lover!!!!

Today while I was cleaning out the coop Duane was crowing (I had them free ranging the yard) and right after he finished a lady neighbor on the chicken coop side of my yard yells "F**K YOU!" the first time it happened I thought it may have been coincidence, the second time it happened I was curious, the third time it happened I was angry, and the fourth time it happened I was still angry but I laughed and kept biting my tongue, the fifth time it happened a male neighbor from the other side of the yard yelled "Shut up!" to the woman after she let out her swear word.

*sigh*

It may be a moot point soon, I may need to cull Duane. He has some kind of wound all down his leg, exposed pink flesh, no blood though. Going to hit it with blu-kote tonight and see how it looks over the next few days. A friend of mine who is seriously into birds is worried that it may be some kind of bacteria that birds can get. :-/ not happy about that.

I suggest the next time she lets loose with the word you call the cops and report her for harassment. As for Duane, I'd put some hydrogen peroxide on it and then an antiseptic. If you can quarantine him.

I don't process birds (yet) bit if I did I'd feed it back to the hens. The heart and liver are good for them. I would freeze some also.

a chickens favorite food is dead chicken. They ALL come running when I am butchering. They must smell the blood.

My girls love chicken wings..... They pick them clean. Their 2nd favorite is turkey. After I've taken all the meat off they get the skeleton and pick it clean as well. The bones all go in the compost pile.

Tell me, does anyone hold a yearly "swap meet"?

See the thing is we all have talents and things other than chickens. I was just wondering if there was a yearly swap meet where folks brought their goods to swap with others for their goods? Plus chickens of course.

Plus I have another question.

When you process your birds, what do you do with all the guts and everything? I have my concerned about the smell attracting predators.

AND

I do know that Vermont has a traveling processing set up. Does anyone know of such a thing in NY? Is there anyone here who does a once a year processing?

WOW ! you guys have been busy today !! Lots of stuff going on. Today I spent the day with my dogs at a weight pull in Lafayette. It just amazes me the amount of weight my dogs can pull. We do it for fun, but it has a very practical purpose for me too. My dogs move fire wood, they bring wood pellets to the house, haul chicken manure to the compost pile and move cement blocks for me. My young Rottweiler pulled 2,250 lbs today !

his personal best and my little Boxer pulled 1,050 for her personal best

Where was this held? That's something I would have enjoyed going to! We used to have American Bulldog and would go to the weight pull competitions with the breeder we got him from.

as far as I can see the spoiler alert is not mandatory. BTW talking about moderation is against the rules as well
big_smile.png

Either way doesn't matter to me. This is the only thread I follow so never going on BYC again wouldn't hurt my feelings any. If I am required to do a spoiler alert for a natural act of chicken keeping.......
It's not mandatory just didn't know who might not like to see bloody things. I just think of it as a R rating on movies some people don't watch R rated movies. So spoiler lets them them pick and choose if they want to see or not.

Jlaw, so sorry for your loss, and you did the right thing, being up front with everyone. I fear I would wimp out and SSS. You may wind up shooting that dog. Maybe you should dig a hole now.
No hole needed. Dog gets shot and then I drag it to the street and call cops. I would deliver it but after he tried to say I threatened him I think he can come pick it up.

Lynzi - Our house is white, which might explain why we get so many. The furnace guy said that they were coming in through the exaust pipe, which is bright white.

Brella - I hope Duane will be alright. Bad neighbors always ruin it. She should enjoy it, she could be living next to a noisy highway or construction lot. I'm guessing she is the biggest complainer.. Is she one of the ones that you went and asked if he was bothering her. Couldn't say it to your face. I'm sorry that people can be like that.

I have a neighbor up the road that on a few occasions has had a dog loose. Luckily it hasn't been when my chicks were out free in the yard. The other day I was in the front of the house and came back around after weeding a flower bed and couldn't find any of my chickens. I called and called, but no answer. A few minutes later I saw them way up on the top of our back field. Right where the baby foxes were playing in the spring. I finially got them down, but I was worried that something might pop out.

We've been cleaning out our garage so that we can move the mower off of my porch in to the garage for winter. Our old mower was smaller and for the last few years we left it out in the snow and just said to hell with it. It was dead anyway. So now we have to get the garage cleaned up so the new one would fit. While cleaning there were a few boxes in the back corner that I haven't seen sence we moved here in 2005. There was a few that were things that I wanted to keep that were suprisingly still in good shape, but I found a box of phone books from 2001. Why did I keep them and why did I move them to our new house? I'm such a pack rat.

The chickens have been enjoying the graden now that it is tilled up. They were scratching aroung like crazy for almost 30 minutes this afternoon before they came over to see what I was doing with the pine needles. I still think that it is bigger then I was expecting, even though I wanted it that big, I'm just excited for next year. I can't wait till my seed cataloge gets here. I'm planning on planting my flowers in December or Janurary this year to make sure that they are nice and big come spring. My back room turns into a big greenhouse come March! Can't we just go from Fall to Spring!!

I have no intention of feeding my chickens cleaning back to the rest of the flock. That's just gross,

but to each his/her own.

I can hear them now. "Does this taste familiar to you?" " Yeah it kinda tastes like Julie and Rob . "

OMG your a trip.

Sorry, that dog needs a good lesson. My husband had kneed replacement
and I was at the hospital today. I should have put the chickens in...but I did not.

Came home to find 3 of them GONE...and as I was walking near the coop...out flew the hawk.

NOW THEY ARE LOCKED IN THE BARN. Cannot take any more chances. Hawks seem
to know when no one is arouind. Regards, Aria
So sorry about that. I know what you mean some days when I have to go out we just lock them out I made my coop big enough that they can just be locked in it if need be.

I would agree with Rancher call the police and file a report. Then put duane in quarentine I call it sick bay to keep the mood like at my house. THe dogs protect sick bay and I keep it on the deck so I can easily hear and check on the bird. I hate it though. but when they are close to be 100% I move sick bay to the flock and keep them in there but with the flock so it is easy to reintroduce.

Rock on That is awesome.

My girls love chicken wings..... They pick them clean. Their 2nd favorite is turkey. After I've taken all the meat off they get the skeleton and pick it clean as well. The bones all go in the compost pile.

Yes I was told that the bones were great for compost.

OMG I get yelled at when people find out I feed my chickens chicken. They are omnivores and cannibals. Works for me. If they could they would probably eat me! Don't bother me none that is far more eggs for me.

My roo is a blessing him and I were chasing a baby back into the coop she didn't listen when it was time to get in and I was down a bird and sure enough she was out and scared oh it was laughable to see me trying to catch this bird I was done trying coax her back my roo was call her and we finaly got her in. Normally I would of waited and let them do it themselves but I had to go and wanted to see my Dad.

Rancher your definately right the roos role is awesome I've seen him break up fights and give the younger girls some worms and bugs. I want him to do his job but sometimes I was want to feed him a bowl of worms, knowing him he would just give it out to the girls. I do love my roo his name is Rajesh. I'm a big bang theory fan.

or it could have been a predator wound. I had a hen 4 years ago survive a possum attack. Missing her skin and feathers from under her wing all the way down her one side of her breast and her leg. She is a ferral bird and I could not catch her. She healed fine all by her self and went broody a few weeks later. She lived until a little over a month ago. I have this feeling your friend might be over reacting a bit. Just my .02

I set up some QT crates, because I need to get my poor molting hen somewhere that the other girls can't peck at her new feathers. She's starting to be more skin than feather. I do hope he will be fine, he's a sweetheart. Hopefully tomorrow AM I can catch him in the coop before he goes out for the morning and give a good looking at. I try not to hold the full grown chickens, except for the ones that seem to like to fly onto my arms (a leghorn and a barred rock seem to think I'm a perch)

I also redid my roosting situation and tomorrow I will have to make a new ramp since they are now higher than before. For now I moved some milkcrates.

OMG I hope they are not in my basement! That is the last thing I need. Today I realized there weren't as many, and I'm thinking because it wasn't nearly as sunny as it was yesterday. I read somewhere that they are attracted to white. My house isn't white but the trim is and the front porch is. And thats where a majority of them are. Not so many today though. I'm hoping that was the worst of it.
Lost lady bug project

We all know ladybugs are supposed to bring good luck to the farm, particularly when they play a role of predator to other insects, such as aphids, that mischievously lie in wait to devour that prized crop when your back is truned. Did you know, however, that many ladybug species, which use to be common in the United states, are dwindling, some even on the verge of extinction?

The lost ladybug project was founded to better understand the disappearance of the insect and to conserve today's populations. This not for profit organization needs your help to document the lady bug varieties in your neck of the woods.

Participants are asked to photograph the ladybugs they encounter and then upload them to the Lost Ladybug Project website. If you'd like to contribute to the cause, please visit www.LostLadyBug.org for more information.

This from the Grit magazine. To bad your are so far away, I'd come down and get a box and let them go here. When we bought the house there were lots of dead lady bugs inside the front window. I don't see so many these days.
