NY chicken lover!!!!

Miquid my BR was just making her very loud egg song........apparently she wanted to wake up the neighborhood and let them know she laid an egg. I honestly thought something was wrong she was so loud

I was up around 4 so I did take a walk back to the coop with the Br's and the SLW's. I hear a sound coming from a SLW hen and at first thought she was spooked by me. After I walked away she was still stretching and making a noise like she's trying to cough up a hairball. I turned the light off inside the run but she was still at it this am.

She was fine last evening when I let them out for a while. I wonder if she got something stuck in her craw. I'll go out later and have a better look at her.

On the whole dead chicken thing and kids not being able to see it is just unreal. If kids are old enough to be on BYC they should understand that chickens dieing is just a part of life. Yes, it can be sad, but when the are on a website specifically about chicksn and other birds, what do they expect to see. They should know that these dead chickens pics on here lived a lot better of a life than those drugged up birds in the super market. Besides, a lot of times we need to post pics to get others input on whats wrong with them.
yes agreed 100%. Kids see much worse than a dead chicken watching prime time tv or reruns during the day on cable tv. An episode of friends is far more offensive than a dead chicken. I'm sure you were taught as I taught my son. He was about 4 and wanted to help me drag a deer I just shot. He was super excited to see where I shot it. So I showed him the tiny entry hole and the massive exit hole the .308 150 grain did to the deer. He had INSTANT respect for guns and death. As I explained to him THIS is why you only point a gun at something you want to kill , this is where our food comes from and meat was once a living thing. He later in the week ran the meat grinder to make burgers from the cuts set aside for that reason. Hiding children from a dead animal but allowing them to watch tv or play video games is not only just plain silly but is being intellectually dishonest with ones self. And I'll get off my soap box by saying if you can't handle blood or death you had better NOT think of owning chickens.
You make me proud Country boy that at least some of your generation has been raised with common sense and respect for real life. I tip my hat to you and your family.

Yes- I was taught a lot like that. I didn't help drag a deer until I was 6 or 7 but have helped skin them and cut them up since I can't remember when. I have helped butcher cows, pigs, and chickens for a long time. I remember going down and watching as each animal would come next. I felt kind of bad but as I aged I got to where I understood why we butchered. We gave those animals just as good a life as they could ask for and in return they would feed us. But, I think as long as you have the animals, your always going to feel bad when the time comes but you have to know why you even own them. And thanks on the comment about how I was raised. I'm happy about what I know and can do and happy my family raised me like this.;)

I think the way people look at death now is just plain silly as you said, look at the tv shows they watch.

yes I agree and the emotional part of killing animals we raise. I recently wrote an article about that. The day it does not bother me to kill a living thing it will be time to be buried myself.

I hope she is ok.

I was totally raised on TV but my dad did try and teach me where food came from and he had me pick a bull to be slaughtered and eated by us. But that is as far as my mom would let that go. But im teaching my son differently. We dont have cable and the antenna doesnt work so tv is severly limited at our house. He never plays his psp and he feeds the animals at 5am. He does all the laundry cleans the bathroom cleans the coops washes the dogs vaccums the house mows the lawn. Im working on teaching him were food comes from he knows it gets killed and processed. Its hard living in the city to teach this but I have friends who help. He's ten hopefully we will be processing soon. He keeps showing me our heaviest bird im like put her down shes a good layer.

Ok- I missed reading this thread one day and have that much to catch upon.. Well, sorry if I missed anybody but here is my input on what seemed to be big conversations.

On the dog, if the owners can't control them they need to get rid of them and find a pet or possibly pest they can control. Yes, our dogs run loose and run off occasionally for days but we always find them and there really is nobody around us for them to bother and they actually guard the chickens. So, I guess if the dog continues to come back, it's time to get rid of it.

I know I missed a lot more but I will try to go back later and catch back up.

This may be yours and others opinion, but you can't force it on others. It's not right. It's call respect, something I find is sorely lacking these days.

That's what I'm putting out their- MY OPINION. It may not be yours but or others but I think people's opinions should be heard. If they aren't then how can we advance in life? I'm not sure if the respect thing is being directed at me or my generation in a whole, but you've got that all wrong. Yes, I have a lot of respect to a lot of people and things and respect everybody's opinion, but respecting a certain person, they have to earn it. People say I'm to young to know what I'm talking about a lot of time, but I know a lot more about certain things than others and there are others who know a whole lot more than me about other things. But, for the most part, I stick to the way I was raised and when people ask for opinions I'm going to put mine out there for them to here. Like it or not, it could help them or others who are interested in listening. But, this thread seems to be about helping others in NY and opinions can be a lot of help in deciding what to do.;)

I agree...And also, anyone should be able to voice their opinions on here, it helps us learn and gain knowledge of and thru others. If someone has an opinion of something and I just keep reading.

I know - it is pretty cool here on this thread .... I am most like Stoneykill and Rancher Hicks in my outlook; but more silly in my personality ....

and I love the mix of serious and silly here.

I'll tell you, I was surprised at Country Boy's young age (pleasantly so).

and love the sharing ....

respect is a 2 way street. This is what is forgotten today. When someone chooses to not respect mine I will not respect theirs as like I said...respect is a 2 way street.
