NY chicken lover!!!!

LOL. Did the roo get higher than their ankle? Chase him around with a big stick and if you can land a few wacks close to him while doing it, all the better. (Don't actually hit him, because he is so small it might kill him) Right now those roos are teenagers. Once they get through that icky teen stage he will be a WONDERFUL roo, very protective of the flock and very aware of the surroundings to protect the flock from aerial attacks. Unless he actually is causing damage to people try and stay the course to see how he is in the spring.
I agree, however my sebright roo never grew out of the nasty teen stage. He finally spurred my dad right in the leg and as soon as he drew blood he was gone. He was great with the girls but we couldn't have a mean roo chasing us around the yard when we already had 3 nice ones to choose from. I don't want friendly roo's but I have also learned not to tolerate the mean ones..there are too many respectful ones out there.

Speaking of Roos, the frizzles have been out free ranging with the Orps and I'm totally surprised at how much they are getting along. Especially with Gru! I thought for sure he'd be going after them but since he's such a gentleman, and if he does goes after anyone and they run, he'll stop right away. This is why I gave it a go to see how the frizzles would do with them...here is Evanora next to him, so funny seeing their size difference.

Well Rosita is doing fine, She hasn't whistled since the other night. Must have goten what ever it wasout, still looks like the dogs got to her with all the missing feathers from molting. My other BM has finially started to lay eggs with shells. They are still real thin, but at least they aren't egg farts or egg ballons.

The kids have been sick last week with a nasty cough. I found homes for my baby banana trees, but didn't get to the post office to get the boxes and mail them out. I'm going to try to do it early this week. If anyone is interested in the Momma tree, I'll part with her, but you need a big van and need to come get her!

Sorry..I don't remember who it was that was looking for a hen for their/a grandson, but if they haven't found one I might know of one or 2 that they may be able to have. PM me

Lynzi - Your newbies are awfully cute!

I just gave the girls the insides of the kids pumpkins and they loved it. It took them a bit to figure it out, but when they did it was a free for all!

Ditto...nothing tastes better than "Mean Roo Stew".... I won't have a mean roo in my yard....one made me so mad, I cut off his head and threw him away. I didn't even want to eat him. Actually I chased him until he was wheezing, caught him and chopped his head off. And by "mad" I mean he came after me so many times he had to go.

With that said, Sumantras are more "wild" than other chickens and all of mine when through a randy teen stage and have been the best roos I have ever had since they got to be about 9 months old. One of them died fighting off a hawk attack on the flock. Talk about fierce defense of the flock.

Well do I ever have a case of lice over here. Almost killed my little black silkie. Found her laying in the yard, cold to the touch, not moving, and thought she was done for. Still, I had to try, so I picked her up, dropper fed her some nutri drench, dusted her with Sevin, got her with Eprinex too since I'd been planning to do the flock anyway, and stuck her under a heat lamp. Three hours later, she managed to struggle to her feet and gulp down water like crazy. Now she's sleeping, and she has a dish of scrambled eggs for when she gets hungry. Seriously, this is one tenacious little bird. I thought she was a goner.

Checked some other birds too and yep, we have lice. Lots of lice. Don't know how I missed it since I handle these guys daily. Anyway, they're all dusted. Has anyone else almost had a bird die from lice? And these are lice, not mites. I did read that body lice in chickens will chew through the skin to drink blood from the developing quill of a feather, so if that's really the case, then blood loss would explain what happened to my silkie.

I'm thinking I'm giving her a bath tomorrow to get all the eggs off her since she's covered in those too and the last thing she needs is a repeat in ten days.

Well I come home
My husband says my little Sumatra Roo is attacking him & my son ..( <- not a baby ...is 30 )
my husband said he kicked at him a few times before he stopped ...
from a Sumatra roo that is down right strange behavior. I've can't even begin to figure out how many Sumatra roo's I have had. A couple hundred over the years and I only had 2 who attacked me.

A little while later I am outside ...my husband goes it s this one ..I go over he is pecking at the toes of his shoes..
I told the roo : No Skiddy No & I chased him away .
I told my husband ...reach down & pick him up & tell him No if he tries it again .
I am interested to see what tomorrow brings ...
I plan on keeping him & his hen ..as they have paired .
He is the head of the babies .
I think he is just trying to see where he fits in in the pecking order . this is the 1st time he has shown any aggression at all towards people (or MEN )

I'm a little bummed I bought what I thought was two Leghorn pullets they looked the same at the time of purchase.I started to noticed a disproportion in growth rates and got worried that the coop/run they were in with the silkies was too small and someone wasn't getting enough food. So I moved them to the big coop. Well Today I took a really good look and One is definitely a leghorn but the other I want to say is either a Rhode Island White or maybe a White Plymouth Rock. Mix ups and mistakes happen so I'm sure someone has my leghorn and I have someone else's Rhode Island White. I really wanted two leghorns, at this point I will take any color variation in a pullet. I'm not even mad at the guy he was sick and his helper was trying and did the best she could. But ugh ugh ugh ugh It's winter and getting someone close to me that has one is rediculous. I was thinking about just getting an Ancona but in the end I would still want the leghorn as well. I understand that I will be okay and can probably wait till next year but I don't want to wait I want her now!!

So another chicken owner got her chicken's stolen, **** two legged predators.
