NY chicken lover!!!!

So I was cleaning out our "Junk Drawer" in the kitchen today and found this loose light/plug that used to belong to my son's robot lamp. I found a light bulb that fit it and seeing as how I moved the chicken coop close to the porch, I can now have light in the coop for an extra couple of hours a day!!

Hopefully this will help with their lack of laying this year!

While I am concerned with some of them not laying and not having been laying for a while, I refuse to put a light in the coop. I still get a few eggs each day.

Well I'm getting NONE. I haven't been getting any for a while now and I would say that everyone is pretty much done with their molt too. So this is all I have left to try before I go back to buying store eggs.

Also, I wouldn't have done anything with light either for these guys but since I moved their coop yesterday and came across this cord today, it was a 2 minute set up and I'm just seeing if it works. If it doesn't, I'll save the few cents on my electric bill and discontinue using it.

Tab, I too am sad to hear that your gram has died. Perhaps it could be a sign that they are together. I know that when I remember one of the people I have lost, somehow I think of them all, so having your gram and your brother be connected by special days special to each makes that connection very strong. I may have said that poorly, but I do believe in connections.

Hug.

agreed. No lights for me. I see no point in burning out the hen by making her lay eggs when natures says she needs a break now. I'd rather have them lay later in life than burn them out young. I have a couple of 7 year old RIR's that still lay a few eggs a week most of the year.

Quite honestly I think some of my girls are just to fat. Fat hens don't lay well.

Now my Dels do give me eggs more than the others. You need to get some Delawares. They do well in the winter and in confinement in a run. If not crowded of course.

You said that just fine. I understand. Thank You

yes, I hope she knew the newest girl member had arrived safe and that knowing that gave her some satisfaction before she passed !

My alpha male just doesn't mark - so I have to mark the border lines ! ha ha ha ha ha ha He does his part, but he is too city to add that to his list of chores. snicker

I would have no problem giving them a break but I barely got any eggs from them at all this year. They were off and on like no other between being broody, molting, whatever other issues they were having. Like I said, if this doesn't help then I'll call it quits with the lamp. I just want to see if it helps at all.

It usually takes my wife a few adult beverages before she starts marking the yard :)

that is so awesome!
I was called to the nursing home at 4am. My gram passed on at 6:45am and it's my brothers birthday today too. I'm tired.

I'm so sorry for your loss, I know it's tough right now but I know your strong and I wish you all the best.
Guilty as charged! Before we leave for long weekends, I like to personalize the exterior of the chicken's area with a little of my private stock. Anything to keep them safer!

TOB

That is so cool! My 10 year old and three dogs do it for me just fine LOL But if I have to go for awhile I will probably do it too!
Oh he only does it at night when it's quiet.

I'm so guilty of the lamp but hopefully with all my new layers coming up I won't need it next year.
