So Sorry ! How disappointing .
Did you ever put them back on layer ?
Do you think you have a egg eater ?
Rancher usually has extra..we will be in Syracuse tomorrow..you want one of our dozen ?

Talking about disappointments..
I put plastic on the back of the coop ..The wind we had tore most of the plastic off ...The staples . staples are securely in though

Miquid I took boxes out because of lack of use. Maybe if you put the nesting boxes on the floor or at least one, where they lay on the floor maybe they would use them?

Give those silkies lots of garlic and oregano to help their Immune systems build up. And I wouldn't put them with my flock either in case it contagious. I've heard of silkies getting ill from paint chips. It had lead in it and made them Ill but not contagious. They ended up testing the carcass. I can't remember how they got the lead out tho. :/

Yes the are in quarentine. That is exactly what i was thinking of giving them. It is believed that the one had head trauma very similar symptoms as my girl had.

With portabello mushrooms, onions, garlic and butter in the frying pan! Don't over cook it or it will get tough quick. I eyeball it but I'm sure you could look up the appropriate temp for venison. When the juice runs clear it's done for me.
Stony might be able to give better directions...

Thanks im just nervous i can only cook chicken n fish well. I need a cooking lesson on red meat though i can make a mean meatball lol.

I'm just finishing up my grower mash now and recently picked up two bags of layer pellets, so they'll be started on those this week. No egg eaters, just no layers. LOL
Love the way it looks I might do something like that.

No chicken friends around to get eggs from?
x2 I really liked those lights too! Wonder how well something like that would stay on poultry netting....
My neighbor emptied her farm stand including eggs about a week ago. I think she took her egg sign down as a matter of fact. So since we did grocery shopping last night, figured we better pick some up.

Would have been nice if layed all summer into fall and THEN stopped laying but I don't think I ever had more than 2 dozen at a time in my fridge where as last year I always had at least 4. Owell....

House – yes, thanks so much for the heads up on propane prices – just little increases can really affect a bottom line !

I think I am going to find a tire and make it a wood ash bath for the winter - I am going to keep them inside the 3 hoop coop most of the winter with a few sunny days with the door open. Deep litter method for their floor - so I think they will need a dust bath area.

I feel your pain Lynzi. Still only one egg a day. Tho when I looked at the few eggs I had today it seemed they were all different and one pullet size. I wonder if Sophie started laying? It had dark speckles like Lucy's had when she laid. Hoping Sophie started laying and they get darker. She is BCM.

I need to tell my egg customers they won't be getting eggs for a month or so. OTs almost time for me to,start,Christmas cookies and I refuse to buy eggs !!!

I might try putting some lights around the coop as well since my solar powered spot light is only good for one or 2 times turning on at night with the sunlight being so scarce. Their water was frozen before 7 tonight. It's going to be a cold one. At least I got their pop door moved to other end. All I need to do tomorrow is put the "porch" over it to keep the snow off the door and make a wind block with it once I get plastic on the sides. Everything else coop wise for winter is complete. But I still refuse to put their heated water bowls in. The cord is ran but I am holding off as long as I can

Have you told us what breeds you have ? My Dels have let up a bit but I'm of the opinion it's due top the nipple waterers and them not getting enough water. Chicken eggs are not as dense as duck eggs because they contain more water.

I still use the nipples for back up but may start putting the gallon waters back in. At least one or perhaps the black rubber tubs. It's till means carrying hot water to the runs but at least they get a good drink once a day. The rubber tubs are easy to break the ice out of in the morning.

On another note. I'm considering ordering chicks from Whitmore farms. I'm looking to get some Dels , but they have a mix order too. Is anyone interested and willing to commit to buying all the non del chicks?

If I ordrer 10 Del chicks the other 15 MAY be a mix of Amer, Welsummer, Marans, and Olive eggers. All chicks are unsexed.

I figure the order to cost about $160.00 Shipping will be divided per chick. $45/25 = $1.80 per chick.

I collected eggs today and found out that I have a new layer.

found eggs on the floor there are two nest boxes that they will not use ugh
th.gif
at least the egg wasn't buried it's a step up I guess. so I thought I would make two more nest boxes that way they will at least have some more options. I'm gonna have to start selling eggs and barter with them. I have a neighbor in construction and one who is an awesome hunter.

So a friend gave me two siklies about 3 months old the one is sick and she asked if I could try and nurse it back to help and I said I would give it my all. These are two blue silkies believed to be 1 male and 1 female. The male is the sick one and the pullet isn't but seems to deterioate when seperated along with the male. They ruled out most diseases and figure either head trauma or genetic issues. Regardless they are cute and I got some venison backstraps for it.

So my question is how do I cook the venison backstraps? I'm terrible at cooking red meat I'm a chicken girl LOL
What are the symptoms. I usually find that if I have one sick chick, they have coccidia. Not all get it or get sick from it I should say. A friend of mine treats with milk. Something in the milk prevents the cysts from eating or something like that so they die. Try to sprinkle powdered milk on feed, or just give milk to drink. Old time dairy farmers fed their chickens milk products. Cant hurt.

4 Partridge Rocks (18 months old) 1 BR, 1 BCM, 1EE & 1 BCM/EE cross. All but the BCM have laid. But the EE who was a daily layer stopped 6 weeks ago shortly followed by BCM/EE mix and the PRs. All were hatched this May except the PRs. Only the BR is laying now. Everyones molt is taking forever it seems

Another question I should have asked is what are you feeding them? What are their ages?

The reason I asked what breeds is because different breeds lay at different rates and keeping a mixed flock insures, to some degree, that while one may not be laying another might. Right now my EE's are on top.

To I think some breeds, such as my BM's are not happy being inside. I have two that are not ranged and they've stopped, while their sisters who are ranged are laying. I expect to move them to where I can let them out to range. They of course do have a run but it may not be enough for them. I also have one with the Dels and she hasn't laid in a while either. I suppose they could be unhappy.

Anyhow, if you believe they are not too old and your feed is sufficient, they may just be taking a break. If they're not being ranged perhaps let them for a week or two and see if things pick up.

This is what I intend to do with the BM's. Last year even in the coldest of winter they laid well, though they were younger then.
