NY chicken lover!!!!

Now I had considered Legbars but figured they lay a blue egg just like my Amers so it doesn't  matter.  The only difference is if you intend to deal the male chicks right off.

As far as I know they're not show birds. I'm not sure what the American standard is.

I have my own standard.  Lay lots off egg and get big and meaty.

They entire reason for the "Bar" development was for hatcheries to sex chicks without have to pay someone to look in their butts.   However the "Bar" crossing just never took off.

There were more "bars" developed than just Creams.

Of course I work toward improving my birds, but EE's are all I need to get blue, blue green, and olive eggs.

If I had a bunch of sex link chicks, what could I do with the males right off?   I couldn't cut their little heads off like some can do.  I'd still have to feed them and grow them out if I ate them.

Right now Creams are rare, but in the future like the lavenders there will be plenty to go around.  Then some new breed will take their place in being rare.  Quite frankly I can't afford them.  Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

If you get some I wish you well,

Rancher

There isnt an american standard yet. But im with you a simple ee will do me just fine, when i choose to get one. I have my leghorns n hybrids that are doing their job.

Did anybody else get tons of snow last night? The chickens are throwing a fit and didn't even come out of the coop today, sigh. I'll have to shovel out their run tomorrow morning before work so they don't totally poop up the coop and the nesting boxes.

Got about 9" they only go in the run to eat drink n lay eggs. Will not leave run n usually just go back in coop the yard is shoveled well a path is shoveled.

Will my jersey giant ever grow lol probably not the breed for me. Still looks like a raven eating chicken food. Same with my orp so slow growing. Probably between 5-7 months. Oh well i just need to be patient i know.

So Sorry Tab ...you did what was best for your dog .

Do you have a dollar store near you ? sometimes you can find some nice stuff there ..thats inexpensive ..as you need 32 somethings .

Miquid - Your welcome for the info ...

We got maybe 4 - 6 inches here ...by the time I got to the coop today at 3:00 ...they didnt care if they didnt get out .
They made due... with the run sifting everything . it was warmer in there anyway ...I spent some time with them in there instead ....

I have a hen molting .my second ...with the fermented feed her feathers are growing in so Fast ..
This is her a couple of days ago before the snow

Morning all. We got a foot of snow and spent yesterday shoveling out the 3 coops and the driveway. I told dh that we are getting a snowblower next year. Between his back and mine, we barely made it though. Thelma and Louise came out and strolled the pathways we made in the yard to get to all the coops. They poked around the driveway for a while they wandered back to the terrorist coop. The wussy terrorists would only come out into their run. I sent out a bowl of melon and broccoli as an incentive for them to come out into their run once dh finished shoveling it. Thats as far as they would go though. Still only getting 4 eggs a day from them. My youngest is flying in tonight from GA for the holidays. Cant wait to see my baby girl.

Tab--many hugs to you and yours. You made the right decision. We had to make that decision last year with our boy. Never forgotten, always loved.

Back to work today. Gotta love retail this time of year...not. Everyone have a good day and stay warm.

I hear ya about the snow blower I have to find parts for mine I just remessed up my lower back shoveling. I have a problem with left hip locking up. Don't know what I did to it today went from shoveling right handed to left and as soon as I pushed the shovel in lower back locked up. Then wife gets the van stuck at back of driveway by road. I swear she cant back that thing up at all.

I think I got 3 out of the 9 layers I have yesterday. haven't gotten over 4 in a few days since they desided to strike and stay in the coop 100% of time.

Good morning,

Well i love the heated dog bowl the water is perfect temperature. I refuse to put food and water in coop atthis point they can venture out into the run that is what i built it for. No one goes past the run they just peir out and run into the coop the good thing is the are working the deep litter for me big time.

Pharm omg i hear ya after tomorrow i work till xmas i have no soul

Stony how is Pat the duck doing?

Ugh my chickens stay in as well for the most part but they aren't very good at working the deep litter. I throw scratch down and some BOSS and meal worms and they are still lazy and leave it alone...ugh I'm jealous.

The good news is that I can play musical coops with some of them and since they don't venture out they just stay where I put them. I'm finally getting my coops balanced out the way they should be.

I agree, drive safe everyone! Apparently there are accident's all over the place here in Albany.

Morning!
I've about had it with this LG incubator and cannot wait to try the Brinsea when I get it for Christmas! Candled the 5 eggs I had left this morning and the last BR egg I have is not developing any further. The Buff eggs gave out and have blood rings in them. I'm down to one egg from Stella that seems to be doing alright. Lots of veins, lots of movement. I did have three silkie eggs set aside from last week - cracked one open this weekend and the bullseye was clear as day so I decided to place the other two in the incubator seeing as how a majority of the eggs weren't doing well. I figured if they all gave out I'd at least have these two to keep going with. I just don't get it. Incubator has been at a steady 100-102 and humidity has been between 37-42%. Owell, IF that egg of Stella's DOES hatch, at least I have the EE chicks to keep it with. Actually one of the EE chicks is really small compared to the others so even if I had to take that one small one and move it in with this chick they'd both be fine.

Sorry about the eggs, Lynzi. I always put in more than I'd like since the odds all will never hatch. If I get to many chicks I just give some away. 102 is a bit high though. 99.5-101.5 is okay I'd say. Are you using a turner? Also I'd say 37-42 is a bit high on the humidity. I've had a hard time keeping mine at 35 this time around. Perhaps I'm not paying enough attention.

Now for those considering a snowblower, DON'T cheap out. DON'T buy used. This is an important piece of machinery and most likely those selling used are doing so for a reason. You don't want to buy another persons problem.

DO buy an electric start, DO buy the warranty that covers parts AND labor. Our washer broke the first year and believe you me, I was glad I had that warranty. $600 is alot of money. The repair bill claimed the repair would have cost $1100. Just shy of what we paid for both pieces.

You must consider what it would cost to REPLACE it. I learned this from our first repairman years ago, God rest his soul.

Unless of course you're handy and I'm not in that area. Burnt my eyebrows off fooling with a furnace once.

Now I call a professional even to change the filter. Just kidding. Now where did I put those filters?

The snow was high so I just did around the horn the the chickens out and take them water. Not extra paths. I do have to do the drive and DW wants the tree inside when she gets home. I hate real trees now. Never thought I'd say that, but I'd like a good artificial or someone to put it up for me.

She's making ginger bread to night for a Ginger bread house decorating party for the Queen and her little friends. I really should have plans to depart for all of this stuff. SHE BOUGHT EGGS! The girls just aren't up to the Christmas baking. Lord have mercy I'd need 1000 hens to cover sales and her baking. It's to bad you live so far away Tabs, the girls would have a good time. DW always succeeds at what she does. Except picking husband.

She needed a man with lots of $$$$. I always say , why couldn't I have been born rich instead of handsome.

I also say , the person who says money can't buy happiness , just doesn't know where to shop.
