NY chicken lover!!!!

Tab, I send my sympathy for the death of your dog. You did the right thing. We so love our dogs, they ask for so little and love us so much it leaves a hole in our hearts. Luckily we have an unlimited capacity to love again.

Lynzi, your chicks are adorable!

Our snow has been coming down for days but wouldn't reach four inches. Overnight we finally got to six! Yay, snowshoes! The girls won't come out. I leave the door open, but they just stay in there. Yesterday no eggs, the two days before there were three each day. Gonna go back and read that link now.

It's been a busy couple days. My dog Cleo (10 1/2 yrs) didn't eat all week and I saw her try to poop with no success. I brought her to the vet on Friday. She had xrays done. I opted for the surgery because I refuse to give up on my dog. I hugged her goodbye so they could prep her. That was the last I saw her alive. The doctor when he got inside discovered that her intestine had twisted cutting off blood flow. She had 2ft of dead tissue. He could have removed it but because it was so close to the cecum successful reattachment was not likely. He offered me the possibility to take her to a specialist in Syracuse but told me it could cost upwards of $5000 (It cost $777 for what was done). Survival not guaranteed. I could have had him close her up and took the family to say goodbye. I couldn't wake her up to be in pain just to say goodbye, that would be selfish on my part. I chose to have her just not wake up from surgery. Travis brought her home and buried her yesterday.

I am so heartbroken. She was the first living thing solely dependent on me for care. She was my first child. This year has been just awful. My one shining star event of the year was having Nora.

Sorry if I missed anything. I didn't read the posts I missed. Now I still have to make 18 somethings for the pre K gift exchange and 14 somethings for the kindergarten exchange and cookies for both also.

Tab, I am so sorry for your loss. It is always difficult to loose something that you love. You made the right decision. Closing her up and bringing her home would have been painful for her. You did what was humane, even though it was a difficult and painful for you.

Many hugs to you and your family. Your story brought tears to my eyes. We recently had to have a dog put down as well. He was almost 15 and in September an x ray showed an extensive mass in his chest. Given his age and the extent of his tumor, it would have been cruel to do surgery. He lived until 2 weeks ago. I had a vet coming for a lame horse and he put the dog down while he was here. Grief is hard. I'll send some healing thoughts your way. Ginny

Tab - I am so sorry to hear the news of your dog! That is just awful. This HAS been a terrible year for you with the exception of Nora...I really hope good things come your way in 2014. You deserve it after all you've been thru.

So sorry to hear this. You did the right thing not waking her even if it was hard to do.

Well don't remember if I posted about my turkeys I raised or not. Hen 22lb tom 34. We cooked the hen on 325 in an electric roaster she was done within 3 hours wings burning to side and blackening. We froze the tom. Well we had 2 store birds in freezer so I made one last night in the roaster. It was a 12.5lbs I cooked at 300 and it was done in hour and half but I cooked longer almost 2hr total. Nothing burned on it and temp in brest was like 170 so not over cooked like first bird. But man it was so tuff and dry compared to the one we raised. We desided last night we wont do a store bird again we are going to raise our own turkeys every year now.

I love the table top roaster cooks so fast. I was trying to research why and best I found was because the heating element surrounds it and there is less air flow than your standard stove. Sadly tom is going to have to be in oven cant fit him in the thing the hen was almost too big.

Jlaw very nice I was thinking about getting a turkey or two next year I mean it is just my son and I so I don't really need much plus with the chickens and hopefully ducks soon I should have plenty of meat.

Gramma thanks that is very good information. Even with the light on laying has gone down dramatically. But that is okay I checked everyone out that look healthy so I'm not worried right now as long as I get some eggs.

Rancher glad your chickens are doing better.

I can't wait to build a permanent brooder outside these chicks are driving me nuts LOL. Well I shoveled a path and still no one will go out two stepped out the run and went right back in. At least they will go in the run well they don't have much of a choice that is where their food and water is LOL. Like why am I leaving the door open and shoveling then for? LOL it's cool My lil girl is just fine much happier out there.

At what age do you plan on putting them outside? When I had Pearl, the white silkie that is now with Breella, sitting on eggs in December, she hatched them out on Christmas day and I recall putting them outside with the others around 8wks(?) of age in February sometime. There were only 3 chicks so those were a little easier to keep inside longer. Now that I have 7 I'm not too sure how this is going to work. I'm hoping I can rehome some once they are fully feathered so I can move the 3-4 I want to keep into the coop with the Orps. If not, 3-4 will have to go into that coop and the rest will have to have some sort of set up in the shed.
