NY chicken lover!!!!

Well I've managed to collect 3 eggs from the big coop - 1 from Stella the Lav Orp and 2 from the BR. My Buff Orp was in there today but she got out for a minute while I was adding hay to the coop and Gru got in there. Not sure what that was all about. I took some pictures of him in there cuz I thought it was just so weird he was trying to cram in there.

Silly thing...I definitely can't give him up yet.

Anyway, my Buff Orp and BR are leaving here on Tuesday. I've managed to collect some eggs and I think I'll give my LG one more try with their egg I have now and the ones I'll get tomorrow. I'm just still so curious as to what I'd get from them if they would just make it all the way and hatch!

Here's my Blue Girl, almost full grown. She'll be 20 weeks on 1/8 so she should be laying soon.

Oh - let me clarify - I have Direct TV .... so if anyone is thinking of it - I can give you some pointers and how to set up so you get $10 off your bill the first six months - I get the same for referral ...

BUT it has its tricks and tips to get the best bargain ... I just called it cable because it is not free TV :) ha ha

OH ! and I know how you can get some fairly reliable internet service without getting Hughs Net or WildBlue because they charge a FORTUNE ! There are a lot of ways to get internet out in the country now - and I can't understand why people don't believe me ... I even told the town manager and he still thinks they need to lay fiberoptic cable. ARGH.

Rancher - I think the winter just has you down, but I could take any Marans if no one else closer wants them. I plan on joining in at the picnic ! So maybe the spring will have you thinking differently. I don't think I would breed for the same goal in the Marans as you ... so keep that in mind if you do pass them on - I am going for mostly hardiness and egg color! :)

One of my resolutions is to reduce our debt.

If I reduce the chickens I may be able to do so and then increase the chicken count at another time. Certain breeds I can get again, which is why Tabs is coming for the Orps next week end. The Birchens however are not so easy to replace.

Trouble is everyone only want's the hens and would be happy to leave me with all the roosters. I won't be hatching anymore unless there are broodies for the marans and perhaps not even then.

It really is a losing proposition to keep chickens, even if I do sell eggs.

Is it really that bad?

What about selling hatching eggs? This is so sad to hear.

How are other people making it work out? Is it that food for chickens is too expensive? Yikes, what are we in for?

We saw a you tube tutorial where a turkey farm lady was making $$$$. She seemed to have a system down. I would think that an egg business is good but now I'm rethinking. We were thinking that longer term, we would make food ingredients, eggs, herbs, etc. and sell the cooked items, something people like to eat, and do some kind of catering. It's a LOT of work but hey everything's a lot of work. I find that people in my area would rather buy the cooked burger than the raw dead cow. Maybe sell cookies, or cakes or something?
