NY chicken lover!!!!

Well thank heaven for no school today! My elliptical came and I spent the afternoon putting it together - ALL by myself! LOL Now I finally have something to do other than tend to animals all day.

I didn't let anyone out today, wayy too cold. I figure everyone is better off staying inside their coops and huddling together to keep warm. The ducks are probably upset with me once again but I don't care. Keep warm everyone! Tomorrow is supposed to be back in the teens here at least.

Meant to add...I'm really worried about my eggs that are due to arrive tomorrow. Rancher you seem to know a lot about the post office, what are the chances they are ok if they spent a majority of the day on a truck or in a post office??

That depends on how they're packed. If like the last bunch I got, I'd say not good. If they have a heat pack perhaps okay. Where are they coming from. These days and express package is not over night. Priority might be better. Bubble wrapped I'd say they might be okay.

They're coming from OH, shipped out yesterday and will be here tomorrow.

Here is inside my coop today at 10 am. Wish I had pics of the girls last ngiht but I was tooo cold to worry about that.

north wall rafter openings
The birds are safe that is what is most important !
You have enough ventilation ! Too much I think ..I would cover / close every opening on the walls .
and only leave 2 very small openings at the top near the roof . it only needs 1 or 2 small openings to vent

I am thinking that chickens in the basement should thaw your pipes

I was out with the chickens in the coop adding more blankets for insulation from the outside .
My coop doesnt have solid walls

It was 3 degrees in there & going down . I left the light on in there ..a 75 watt bulb ...I am hoping it will add some small heat for them .

Are they silkie eggs?

I know the bible says, Love covers a multitude of sins, but I'm not sure that includes silkies.  :lau

I'll keep my fingers crossed just the same.          :fl

Yup, trying to hatch out a nice looking splash to replace the nice one I got this summer but lost in the fall.

I use my roosters (cuz I love my girls and can't eat them) any way I would use store bought chicken. None of my birds are considered a "dual use" breed, either. Stony eats his sumantras....and they are tiny birds, like Cornish Game hens from the store, but smaller breast meat. So, yes, you can do other things with them.....Just remember to let your butchered "meat" to rest in the fridge for 3 days before cooking or freezing it. I forgot that once and the meat was so tough I WISH I had made soup of it. LOL

That is good to know. I haven't started to learn about it yet, but I think that it is time that I start to.

Man it was so cold today. I went out every 2-3 hours to make sure that they had fresh water. I think that my next investment will be some kind of heated water container. Have to think about what would be best for my set up.

The boys were in the hot tubs this morning! I bring out warm water and they love to get in it right away. I call it "hot tub time"

Every loved the other day to be out and about!

They can't wait till later in the week when it is supposed to be warm. I try to let them out, but the cold windy days I get a porch full of chickens. I look out the back door and they are standing on the door mat looking up at me wanting some treats!

Such cuties! I never thought about bringing them warm water outside to sit in. LOL They're always so quick to run off to their pond.
