That's going to be the big test this summer. I've done a lot of searching around this winter and managed to find a nice splash pair that I'll be traveling to Albany for coming up soon. I have a nice lavender pair that came from the chicks Geri sent me last year. I'll probably add a blue hen if I can find that lighter color blue that I love and not the dark blue that almost looks black. I've put more money into the silkies than any other breed which is why I finally decided to downsize the larger birds and work mainly with the bantams this year. I will definitely be waiting for weather before having any other eggs shipped. I was just hoping to have a good foundation flock by this Spring/Summer to start working with the colors I wanted to work with. I'll have some but still looking for more.Lynzi--sorry to hear about your hatches. It may be best to wait for warmer weather before trying again. I wont ship eggs in this cold. Let me know if you want some eggs in the future and I will put you on the list right behind Pyxis.
Silkies arent freeloaders. I sell chicks and eggs, both for hatching and eating. I have one young lady who buys them for her kids as they think its great that they fit in their hands. You just have to find that market to do what you want with them. Thats why I invested in top lines to start with and have made my return already. The bonus...they are my spoiled rotten babies and I love them to pieces!
truck 95% done. My brain is fried trying to fix it's brain. Think I'll split wood to clear my mind.
As a few said JLaw. Genetics. My entire bio paternal side (when I refer to my father here it is my step dad I am refering too.) were alcoholics. It killed my bio dad at 53 and his dad at about the same age. His entire side of the family, every male anyway had it. My son is dealing with it now. It is genetic. BUT the mind is a powerful thing. You CAN do it.
Is this something that runs mostly in the paternal side of families? This is the same story with my family - My grandfather passed away before I was born because of alcoholism, I'm sure his father was the same, my father was more of a drinker as we were growing up than he is now, just a beer or two at night now, he still works so he can't afford to be waking up every morning hungover. And now my brother.
I forgot to mention in my earlier post, IF anyone in the Albany area or along the way from Syracuse to Albany has Silkie (preferably in splash or blue) hatching eggs available, I will be making the trip out that way on an upcoming Sunday (not sure when exactly yet) and I'd be able to pick them up if anyone has any for sale.
I do not know for sure. It is to a lesser extent on my Maternal side as well. My great grandfather was an alcoholic. But in all honesty, he went through 2 German occupations in France, and with my grandmother witnessed D day in her home town. So his drinking might just be a life thing and not a genetic thing. I do not know enough of my French side of the family as I have never been there. It runs on both sides of my family I think. I know I had an uncle who had diabetes drank until he died from it lost fingers and toes. Sorry to hear about your daughter stony. I worry about that with my girl all the time her heart condition makes me worry a lot.
How about this weather I hope the pipes unfreeze I don't know about the one from well to house will or not but heres hoping. Also no wind today so house got up over 65F!!!
I think we will get a pellet/corn stove come taxes I just have to figure out what all I have to do to install it and have it legal. I think we have to take the stack all the way to top of house so 2 stories will cost a lot for pipe i think.
