NY chicken lover!!!!

I have some rose comb leghorns if you want some eggs, once they are laying again. I can tell who lays what, and I can grab eggs from the friendlier girls. My rooster was hatched from rcbl hen and Wyandotte mix roo. He is shown in my avatar, but that was taken over a year ago, he has filled out a bit since then. Fertilized eggs from him x rcbl eggs I have will be mostly rcbl. The girl I have hatched from him and one of my leghorns is slightly larger than my others and lays a nearly white tinted egg. Other than the slightlly off egg color, you wouldnt know she isn't all rcbl. That may throw your egg color too much, but if you're interested I can help out. Also want to let you know that the hens are hatchery birds from my first ever chicks (mcmurray). PM me if you're interested.

Just took a look at your "Woods on Wheels" coop, that thing is awesome! Every time I see a trailer for sale on CL somewhere I can't help but think how much sense it would make to build a coop on one just for the ease of trailing it when it needed to be moved. Genius!

Morning!

Today is catch up on chores day.  I've washed dishes and eggs, 2 loads of laundry so far,  and fed everyone. Next is wash up, floors, and more laundry (bedding).  Then tonight DH and I are going to my company party.

We have been tackling our house today as well, the kids room got really out of hand lol

Hey everyone busy at work. I send love n prayers to all! My dad just got the hospital in time for the superbowl so im making him special chicken wings. My next roo is gonna be a rosecomb i was thinking an amerucana since they are ride or die for their flock. I have such a small flock i can only have one roo at a time.

Anywho have a great day back to work.

Ack!!! Seriously, none of the other hens here are crazy lizzie borden murder hens.. no wonder they kicked her out.. of course, the other cochins are LF and twice her size. How the heck could a little hen be such a psycho? So sorry pyxis =(

Don't worry about it! Like I said, I don't know for sure it was her, and she didn't bother my MF bantam cochin pair when I put her in with them. So maybe it wasn't her. It's just suspicious since she had been fighting with her. I like her, she's really cute, so if she settles in now she'll stay, as long as when broody season comes about she doesn't go after chicks!

The problem with filling wells is it don't take into account out side temp or humidity which will highly affect your incubator humidity. I'm trying to find one that has a prob that would fit into it but not seeing luck I am seeing here someone had humidity over 45% following directions because of they're out side heat/humidity.
If this thing is right, my office temp is 71 and the humidity is 30. The thermo on the wall is 71 too or pretty close. I don't have the incu going....................... yet.

It's day 18... is it just me or does this guy look like a runt? The egg is big, but the chick is barely taking up half of it. I know it's alive. It put its foot on the egg and wiggled its toes at me. All the other eggs are blue/green and impossible to candle at this time because color and they're so full of chick. It's just this Leghorn/Dark Brahma that I can see well and what I see makes me wonder.

In my experience all eggs don't finish at the same time. Some early, some late. That's why I keep the chicks in the incu for the full three days they can go without eating. I have my brooder set up with food and water ready for them. I put some sugar in the water and stick their beaks in immediately. If I have to I take the first chicks and leave the other eggs to give them time. 21 days is not a hard fast rule so don't go by that alone. Be patient.

Single combs are recessive, so if you breed them to another comb, like a rosecomb, all chicks will have rosecombs as long as the rosecombed bird doesn't have any single comb recessive genes lurking about. Of course, doing that blows the breeds standard, and egg color.

I know the standard for Dels but that don't matter if you want eggs. Now if I cross my Del hens to a NH of good size the hens will be red the roos Del pattern and I can work them back to the Del hens. I suppose.

I'm not into showing, but I'd like birds that don't get frost bit.

As for the marans they're not shown here are they? So since that is the case working for a Rosecomb line won't matter and then I can work to the egg color later. From what I've seen egg color isn't consistent anyhow. Plus a hen that lays an occasional egg of 4 is not as important to me as one that lays more eggs on a 3-5 scale.

I won't do any of this of course but wish there were lines of rosecomb for us northerners. If I was 10 years younger I might.

Well the wake went on longer than most I suspect and I doubt I'll get done anything I wanted too. DW is still not home from the church as folks hadn't arrived yet after the funeral. It started at 10 and I left before even getting to the family cuz I couldn't stand longer. I'd been there an hour and still had a ways to go.

I don't expect her home til about 5pm.

The young man was only 24. It's very sad.

Well tried to get water again. I went to the well put a blow dryer down it as we went to the store. Came back cut the wires in the well and redid the connection they had them capped but taped together so that if water or rain got in it could sit in the cap. Only one was taped by it's self but even it was taped weird. So I taped all wires by them selves, then folded the wire so the end of the cap was up and the opening down and then taped them to the line so water couldn't get into the connection. Still no water. While I was sitting there checking lines inside I see water starting to come in through the wall alittle under where a line comes in. So I may have a break and a frozen line what fun!!!!!! Hard to tell since snow is melting and its raining some could just be run off water. I did notice the line coming through the wall into basement is black plastic kind that looks like it will be thinner walled than pvc pipe. Have a propane torpedo style heater blowing on that wall maybe with the warm weather and me heating it from inside it might unfreeze.

Had a chicken decide she wanted to lay on dirty floor and let it get kicked around silly thing.

I HAVE WATER!!!! not sure if I have a broken line out side but I found the one that is broken inside in heater area now to figure out how to fix a heating line.
