NY chicken lover!!!!

Rancher, will put your DW in our daily prayers for good health!

Armor, we aren't supposed to have roosters either. The town doesn't want the neighbors disturbed. Last summer we heard crowing from the back neighbor! How nice! We hatched 3 gorgeous birds and they are a riot. They live in the kitchen and walk around with us during the day. They are about 10 weeks and they all have spurs but we don't know if they are hens or roosters yet. One makes a little honking noise, so we aren't sure how loud they will get. We are very attached to them. One sits on my shoulder. They cook with us, we play them music and they watch TV with us. Tried to upload a pic of the frizzle, likes to sleep in my lap, so cute! There are a lot of people in the city with chickens and other livestock but since city people keep them inside, as long as the neighbors don't tell, it may work for a while. We keep a separate Dyson vacuum next to their area so that if any feathers drop we suck them up right away. We have to get them some outfits, diapers and those little jackets soon.

We aren't too sure about treats, but I dropped a pot of linguini and some spilled out so I offered them a noodle. Fredo was hilarious, went crazy for the linguini. There was nothing on it, totally plain. Ours had alfredo sauce with baby shrimp, but the birds, nothing. I'm a little worried about the Silkie, the other 2 eat good, but the Silkie appears to be visually impaired when it tries to eat so I let it eat separately sometimes.

Been out a lot, taking care of the folks as best as I can (dressing changes, groceries, medications, dr.s apptmts, etc.), so haven't been on lately. Stay warm everyone!

It's horrible! I keep thinking there is one out there, now alone to brave the night...not knowing if it is on the ground starving to death, or has already been taken in the night :( :(   Everyone else is cozy in the coop and he is out there wondering where everyone is :(  The one I found today has tucked himself away in a nesting box and did not want to come out and the others are perched and crying out...perhaps letting the other one know where they are, I don't know, but I didn't try to quiet them just in case they really do have a connection.

Glad to hear at least 3 made it home. Hopefully #4 will find its way home too. Rough to loose a bird even for a few days. We do our best to keep them safe, but when something happens we are left wondering "maybe I should have done this differently" or oh I shouldn't have done that." I'm sure you did everything you could have, Coop. It's obvious you care very much for your birds. Thinking good thoughts for safe home for the white guinea and for the one that just returned to heal quick.

Morning all. Wind was very chilly this morning but as usual everyone was in a hurry to get out. Already got 2 eggs this morning. The sun is shining so I am hoping for a little warmth today.

Rancher--hope your wife gets better soon. Warmer weather would be helpful.

JLNY83--welcome! Not sure where you are at in the hudson valley but there are a few places around to get cheeps. How old are you looking for? How many? Any particular breed?

Phor---sounds like you might have to trim the feathers around your silkies eyes is you think its having vision issues. I keep them trimmed around my silkies eyes so they see better. You will need to trim their nails as well since you have your birds inside. They will grow too long and make it difficult to walk properly. Keeping the feathers trimmed around the vent area will also keep it a bit cleaner. Just some advice to help you out.

Domestic day today.

Good morning. Welcome to the new folks.

Yesterday I brought my partridge rock girl in to the basement. The others have been pecking the back of her head, and one was standing on her demonstrating while I watched and gave them their afternoon treats. She was all settled, then I thought she might like a pal, so I brought one of the girls she grew up with in. Speckles immediately pecked her on the head, she cringed and started breathing through her beak, so Speckles went back outside to the coop. So I will check Tapistry out today and maybe put some blucote on her, and probably me...resting today as I sat down a bit wrong and suddenly while skiing, giving myself a bit of an adjustment. Twinges tell me that moderation is the word for today.

Rancher, sending positive energy to DW.

My BR is getting pecked on the head as well. The Big Girls don't like that she barrels into the food dish. So I have coated the bare spot with Nustock. Apparently it doesn't taste good since they leave her alone then. I never removed her from the coop tho.

Spring needs to get here so these girls can roam the yard again......

Im Glad most of them came back ...Hopefully they have learned their lesson .
They now know where their bread is buttered & who buttered it ! YOU !
I hope they don't forget that when (if?) the weather ever gets warm

Morning All,
Out bright and early this morning checking for eggs since it's -4 out there! Ugh, when will it end. No eggs yet BUT, I DID find out who's laying in the Orp coop since she's in the nest box as I type this.....

Nervous Nancy! My blue Orp!!! Sooo happy she's laying! Now if only I can catch Gru and her in the act so I can throw some of her eggs in the bator! I would absolutely LOVE to get some Splash chicks from two of them!

It might help to have two food dishes. I sometimes hang to feeders in each run so all will get the chance to eat. Perhaps she knows it's the survival of the fastest to the food dish.

Update on the hatch. Well today is much better than last night.

So far most of the Dels and EE's have hatched. Only two of the Birchen Marans have hatched for a total of 19 out of 30. There are more that have pipped and some nearly out.

I don't understand why the Marans have such a hard time. Only two out of 9. One is nearly 1/3 the way around but seems to have quit. Temp is at 99.6 humidity is at 69 on the highest reading. My guess is it's a genetic thing. Many have pipped but just don't complete the hatch. I am reluctant to help since it would just carry on the problem. I will be giving Marans eggs to every broody that sits this year.

There are a number of lavender EE's in this lot so that is nice. Usually there are a lot of blacks. Good layers mind you but a variety of colors is nice. One may be a frizzle/auraucana cross. I hope.

I will give them til tomorrow. The longest they can go without eating.

I will be setting up the brooder down in the basement. It's cold but not AS cold as the back room where the water freezes.

Congrats on the hatch. Hope more get their act together and come out to play with the other chickies.
