NY chicken lover!!!!

Well I just fit six goose eggs and fifteen silkie eggs in a brinea eco 20. That was a squeeze, and it forced me to move all my mutt eggs from my layer flock to my homemade incubator. Which is fine, I get great hatches from it - when it behaves itself. Sometimes the thermostat 'forgets' to turn off the light. This is what happened to me and ruined my NYD hatch. It forgot to turn the light off on the 31st and killed all the chicks but one, which was devastating because a bunch had pipped and were perfect and would have hatched otherwise.

I'm debating moving them to my LG, which is affectionately call the murder box, because it does fine right up till lockdown when suddenly, with no changes at all, it kills the chicks just before they hatch. I can't figure it out. But I'm thinking of letting it do the incubating up till lockdown and then locking down in my homemade, reducing the chance of it forgetting to turn the light off, since it seems to happen only after it's been running for a while, like three weeks. Ugh, I should just buy a darn water heater or wafer thermostat for it and figure out how to wire it up.

Chicken Nugget, one of our "lap chickens"... Luv, we tried putting our chicks on their back to see if they are male or female. All 3 would gladly have fallen asleep like that. They love getting little chest and back rubs. They all have spurs and our frizzle sizzle is making a honking noise. They may all be roos. So that concept of putting the chick on it's back didn't work for us. We have 1 silkie and 2 cochin/silkie mix.
Chicken Nugget is Adorable! What type is she? Frizzle sizzle did u say? Is that frizzle silkie? Sorry for my ignorance, I don't know anything about silkies or frizzles. He/she looks like a wonderful bird.

Thanks Phorda! Chicken nugget was from a black frizzle cochin rooster and a silkie hen. We still are not sure of the sex. It is about 9 weeks old. We got hatching eggs on Ebay, we are totally new to chickens and the eggs were marked silkie and sizzle and the Ebay sales person had the photos of the "parent" birds. So far they are very friendly. We play with them every day.

question. has anyone had a chick that barely had any feathers at 3 weeks? We did our first hatch ever and there is one that kind of concerns me. when it hatched its eyes kept getting crusted over so every few hours I had to clean them with a Q-Tip so it could find the food and water. now its eyes seem fine just no feathers. Any one have ideas? Here is a pic I took today.

Might just bee a real slow grower. looks almost like the runt of the litter. I've bought a few that took awhile to feather out namely my barred rocks. Also my rooster ee is taking longer than my 3 hens did not sure if it's the barring or just wanted to take his time. Should be fine just make sure has plenty of food feathers take a lot of protein to make.

I've had it happen before with roosters, especially brahmas. The males feather in much much slower.

Jlaw my brooders are too small but that is a good idea. If I move them to the pool I'll give it a shot.
Another idea I saw when looking up duck drinkers was someone using some sorta sour cream type dish. What they did was cut like a U shaped hole on one side then put a rock in bottom then filled with water. Lets the ducks get face in water good. Or you could use a half gallon instead of a gallon and then use like a butter bowl instead of the 9x9 baking pan. I just googled duck waterer and saw some nice pics of different ideas.
