NY chicken lover!!!!

FYI - I will be posting Delaware chicks to CL. $3 each.

I intend to order eggs and/or a new rooster if I can find a nice one.

I'll be taking a trip to TX next month and if I can bring back some hatching eggs. Not sure what kind or why. Just cuz. The plan is to go to a county fair. If I do I hope they're as nice at the TX airport as they were at the Birmingham one.

Thanks for the ideas ...  I didn't even think about Craig's list.  and I'm going to talk to DH to see if he would be interested in building some of the ideas you guys had.  thank you!!  I was having a hard time envisioning something.  :)

Also check homedepot they have older models on clerance but even then a nice wood one 8x8 is like 700. Or if you dont jave high winds one of the cheaper tin arrow sheds.

Hi everyone!  I just learned this thread was here, after spending a lot of time here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...t-of-here-a-diary-of-a-crazy-chicken-man/6180

We are located in the Finger Lakes region of NY.

I am looking for some local hatching eggs and have had no luck on Craigslist Rochester, Syracuse, or Elmira/Corning.  I am looking for Black Australorp, Orpington (any color is fine), and Speckled Sussex.

I will be setting the 2nd week of April, probably April 8th or so.  If I can't find local, I've got a pending order with Meyer Hatchery, and they are schedule to arrive April 5-7th.

I am looking for no more than 5 or 6 of each breed.

Hope everyone is well!  And I don't know about you guys, but I am sure looking forward to spring...it's been a nasty winter, for sure!

There is Deb in Pompey that has buff Orp and speckled Sussex. She had an ad on CL last week or two for hatching eggs. Nice birds, GlassHen and I both have birds from her.

Gorgeous birds! Thanks for sharing! What is their temperament like? Are they flighty or calm, social or talkative? How are they with the cold? Are there any more common birds u might compare them to? Not tons of info out there on brabanters.

I love my Brabanter, Gertie (I got her as a very young pullet last May from Marquisella.) She is super sweet, easy to handle (my easiest bird to pick up)...she's very vocal, too, and sounds as different from my other chickens as she looks. She just started laying, much later than my others; a nice sized white egg.

I have Coronation Sussex and Lavendar Orpingtons.

I love my Coronation Sussex and Lav Orp hens I got from you, Marq. They are good birds all across the board!

PS: there's the Lavender's pic in my icon. She is my cuddly girl! So pleasingly plump, LOL!

For the emergency move --

I would put one or two of the $20 cattle panels in my pickup truck bed - you can bend them into an arch and then tie them down. Spend $20 -$40 on tarps and zip ties .... and arch up the cattle panel next to your house and tarp them up TIGHT - and then just worry about the door - it is NOT pred proof - but will give them room to move without picking on each other and if you crack your window so you will hear if something is trying to rip through the tarps.

That's for an emergency - then once you can breath and think - you can place where you like and all the material you used in that emergency - can be reused ! :) You can put up that wireless hoop coop in one afternoon. some say just an hour .... but really - they do have to be manhandled into a solid arch and you do have to fuss with sliding the tarps tight and overlapping them and such. Then just spread a bale or savings on the bottom and who cares about nest boxes for a few weeks - you can get the eggs off the ground. You won't have time to build a proper wood frame for the bottom -so you will have to anchor it down like a tent .... all will take an afternoon I recin'

Lap, I called Deb yesterday, want to ask about americaunas, but she hasn't called back. My friend wants to get some chicks. I am trying to resist, but have thought lots about ducks in that place where the water runs all year...and it wouldn't be hard to dig out with the tractor for a black plastic pond form...a little more fencing...
