Morning all! Sunny and nice here this morning. Forgot to set my clocks ahead last night so my cat was demanding I get up this morning. I let the silkies out this morning to stretch and run around the front yard. Really the driveway and the little bit of grass showing on the edges of the driveway. Legolas son decided he was going to be the man this morning. Challenged his father and his father put him down. He then turned his sights on Little Man. Despite his name, Little Man is bigger than the young cockeral and is three years old. Didnt take long for the youngster to get schooled about who rules that part of the real estate and what the rules are when everyone is out and about. No serious fights took place and I was there to make sure nothing bad happened. Now they are all out enjoying the sunshine digging in the dirt and grass. Grooming will take place this afternoon. Mostly feet and butts. Have to get pics of the youngsters as well.

The terrorists were beating on their front windows because I was late getting out to let them out. We are going to have so much mud with this thaw! Their run is a muddy mess when it thaws. I have to turn over the litter in their coop today. Its been too frozen to do so before. My neighbor came over last night with Timmy to see the terrorists who were in the driveway. He loves the bawk bawks and has missed them all winter. His mom told me he stands at the door looking out at my yard pointing and saying bawk bawks. The boy isnt even 2 yet and he is already a chicken man! Bill was a good boy and kept his distance and didnt bother them.

I definately cant let Little Man and Bill out at the same time. In the past Little Man has buffaloed Bill into backing off but now that Bill is a mature roo, he would probably kill Little Man in a fight. Little Man has a lot of heart but he is only a silky roo and would stand no chance against Bill, a big rir roo. So I let the littles out in the morning and then the terrorists in the afternoon.

Time to get moving before my get up and go leaves without me.

Lap, I called Deb yesterday, want to ask about americaunas, but she hasn't called back. My friend wants to get some chicks. I am trying to resist, but have thought lots about ducks in that place where the water runs all year...and it wouldn't be hard to dig out with the tractor for a black plastic pond form...a little more fencing...

Her CL ad had the BO hatching eggs, with EE also available. I have no way of hatching, but would like some more of her nice birds. My wellie lays a nice dark speckled egg and the SS a light brown, both closer to medium size but expect them to get larger this summer. Definitly let me know what you hear, I'm giving the brooder cage a good cleaning today and getting it set up in case TSC gets something in I want for production birds.
CrazyChick- where were you located again? Couple Aussies would be nice too, of the non-TSC variety. I want/need something that will go broody on occasion, so I can hatch.

Hi everyone! I just learned this thread was here, after spending a lot of time here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...t-of-here-a-diary-of-a-crazy-chicken-man/6180

We are located in the Finger Lakes region of NY.

I am looking for some local hatching eggs and have had no luck on Craigslist Rochester, Syracuse, or Elmira/Corning. I am looking for Black Australorp, Orpington (any color is fine), and Speckled Sussex.

I will be setting the 2nd week of April, probably April 8th or so. If I can't find local, I've got a pending order with Meyer Hatchery, and they are schedule to arrive April 5-7th.

I am looking for no more than 5 or 6 of each breed.

Hope everyone is well! And I don't know about you guys, but I am sure looking forward to spring...it's been a nasty winter, for sure!

Hi Sweetpea! one in a while on craigslist I see the lady with the eastereggs and royal palm turkeys eggs, she is in Mclean and could meet you in Ithaca I think she charges $10 dozen for either.
It HAS been a nasty winter.. worst in my 13 years here I think.

Theres my first little chicks I have in the spare bedroom right now its too cold to be outside for sure!, Mottled Java and Brabanters. The big Brabanter is the boss and I see the other chicks follow that one and learn... there are two younger Brabanter I was worried they were too small to be with the other guys but everyone is getting along good and the little guys are already growing. My two cats are very interested in them but I think in a good way, they sit on the table and watch quietly while I do the feed and water.

Question for someone... when should I worm them for the first time? I have DE in the shavings and the food is that enough? Got a water bottle to teach them to drink from and brought a piece of wood in to cut them a roost.. the bigger guys already want to roost on something. For now I just have a little short cup in the corner tape to the wall for their vitamin water.

Some people never worm, ever. My uncle, an old farmer, laughed when I talked about worming my chickens. He said "why you want to torture your birds like that?" So I have stopped worming twice a year and do it only just before winter. Why then? Cuz they are in the coop more and getting in each other's droppings more. Only reason. IF I were to notice a substantial decrease in egg production I might do it another time, "just in case", ya know. But that hasn't happened yet.

As far as worming chicks? Does anyone worm their chicks or just their adult birds once or twice a year? Your chicks haven't been exposed to worm eggs yet, as they haven't been outdoors. (And even if they were outdoors right now it is far to cold for worm eggs to be viable)

I worm naturally with cayenne pepper, pumpkin and squash seeds. They get them every few months. I have never had a problems with worms in my hens. And all chickens have worms it's just when they forget an overload of them that they have problems.

Afternoon All!
Been running all weekend. About to head out again soon to bring the kids to a movie.

Wednesday is lockdown for my eggs and all 5 are still going strong! I think I found my new method of hatching! I also found a small temp gauge that tracks humidity. Had one here in my house this whole time!

400

I plan to add water on Wednesday and see how the humidity levels pan out in the Brisnea for the last three days of lockdown. Right now the arrow has been pretty steady at 25 with no water in there at all. This is the best hatch I've had yet! I've never had 5 eggs ALL make it this far.

Got my 2nd egg from my Blue Orp today. Still nada from the ducks.

Edited to add: my eggs in the Brinsea are also moving already!!!! I'm so excited!

Now it gets very wet here so I worm twice a year or so. If it's dry where you are worm should not be a problem.

Chicks do not need vitamins. Their feed will have everything they need. Just food and water is good enough. You can destroy their kidneys with all this junk they put out. Lots of stuff being sold is not necessary and is just a way to make money. Don't be a sucker. DO NOT BE OVERLY MOTHERING. They don't need treats and all that stuff. They're not like cats and dogs.

Chicks are babies they eat, sleep and poop. It's not good to pester them 24/7. Stress is the number one killer.

Hmmmmm....I've never wormed my flock. And mine won't eat squash or pumpkin seeds! I've only had my flock for not quite a year, yet...but so far haven't had any issues with illness or anything like that.

Because of the snow pack, our coop is getting quite muddy (we used sand as a substrate). Perhaps I should consider worming them this year? Is there a downside?
