So everyone dry hatching, how does that work you just don't add the extra moisture?
I'm still wondering why the dozen I gave my friend were all duds. Maybe I'll give her some more to try again with a dry hatch.
She did say the eggs looked porous. But those shells are thick! I have a hard time cracking them.

I didn't add any water in my incubator until lockdown. So days 1-18 it was low at like 25%, no higher than 30%. That was no water, non sponges, nothing. I added water to half the well at lockdown and it brought humidity up to 70% and they all hatched on day 20.

You must cover them with plastic asap. Easy enough to do. I don't always use the blow dryer to shrink it. I just put the plastic up.

Also if you own the house I suggest you insulate. Even one wall at a time as you can afford to do. You can tear out one wall, insulate and sheet rock as you have money to do so. Or if you have an enclosed porch like we did buy and store materials til you have enough to finish the job.

I hung the sheet rock by standing it straight up rather than horizontal like they show in some videos. If you have 9 ft. ceiling just order 10 ft sheets and have it delivered. Cut it to length, stand it up and screw it on. The only seams you'll have are up and down. Remember seams for doors and windows should be in the middle of the window or door. NOT along the edge of the casing.

Can't lift it to redo the ceilings. Do what P. Allen Smith did and use the corrugated metal panels and paint it. They're light and easy enough to screw in.

We did the bathroom with wainscoating strips and polyurethaned it natural. It looked real nice and never will need painting. Just a new coat of poly.

I learned this past summer I could replace a window on my own after our lovely old tree was uprooted and crashed through one during the twister last May. The entire house is lath and plaster, no insulation at all. We are doing just a little at a time. I replaced the mudroom door myself last fall since it really let a huge amount of cold in and I made that very mistake how did you know! So once it warms up I will fix the seams. I love that idea about the corrugated metal panels on the ceiling. The house is almost paid off but we are thinking when DH retires we might just get something smaller and easier to care for and heat.

We needed Sweet PDZ and extra heat lamp red bulbs. I wanted GLW, but think I'll wait to find decent stock, unless they get some in Cortland next week

OMG just came across this video one of my friends in CT posted! She was on the news (the one holding the little girl in the video) because the house across the street had 193 chickens inside of it! Yes, 193! This was in the town that borders my hometown in Ct.

One of the red pullets was looking sickly when I got her home and she passed overnight, not surprised. She stood with wings held out, didn't run or peep like the others, no interest in food or water. The other red is off slightly, but likely to pull through. If this red does pass, I'll talk to Darin at TSC to see how the ones in store are doing.
The tetra tints just plow over the banties. Favorite banty is little lavander looking thing, named Cottonball.

Our old house was the same. What we have always done is to not claim any exemptions during the year, then at filing time we'd get more and would use the money on the house. We had enough one time do have the roof replaced, another to have a furnace installed, and another to buy all the supplies to redo a bathroom.

It's nice if you can save during the year, but it seems there is always something that eats the money up.

Our new house is smaller, and more ergonomically suited for me. Everything is on one floor. Three steps into the house. The yard is pretty much flat. AND it has more land.

Morning all. I was late getting out to let everyone out this morning and heard all about it. I had all three coops yelling at me. Ground is somewhat firm thank goodness cause the mud is horrible. Supposed to be 50 today and 30 tomorrow. March is being very lionlike. Mother nature is seriously menopausal! Candling me eggs tonight to see how many are still perking along. Lockdown is coming soon. Hatch date is the 21st. Cant wait to have some babies!

Work later and already someone wants me to cover their shift. I said no. Probably will get stuck alone again and today is notoriously busy. I need to twin the lottery.

I'm not sure what it means to "TWIN" the lottery but if you do please remember me.

Hybrid chickens are sometimes more prone to health problems and have a shorter life expectancy from what I've read. I prefer to start my chicks on Medicated feed for the first few weeks. Then I switch to unmedicated. I could be wrong but it works for me.

The chicks at TSC may be stressed a bit to far. I suggest starting them with some sugar water, since they've most likely reached the store by the end of their 3 days without food. I dunk all beaks to make sure they all get a quick drink too. Strange as it may seem I taste the water myself to make sure I can taste the sugar and have enough.

Having ducks now I make sure to keep the medicated feed well away from my ducks.
