NY chicken lover!!!!

Finally got a good picture of "Nervous Nancy" while I was outside trying to get some better pics for my website. She is definitely going to be bigger than her momma!

Really happy with the way she feathered out, she seems to be calming down a bit too which I like. She now struts along at the same pace as Gru and Stella, isn't as frantic anymore. It's like she's finally matured from Chick to Hen!
She looks a lot like one of my Blue Maran! She maybe just a touch darker.

Man it is nice to see green..Hardly any here.

Just a little at the back of the driveway.

When next week? I've only been east as far as Syracuse 3x in my life. lol Actually, my dil and grandson are flying south and I'll have the twins. I don't think I'm up to a 4+ hour trip with two 3yr olds. Depending when I might be able to make it work. I'd love to have it.

I'm leaving on a jet plane on Wednesday.

I think it's about a half hour from me. I'm ok with buying hatchery eggs for this year, but would prefer local to avoid all of the shipping hazards, kwim.
Do you have other breeds?

I can't remember who all offered me what now, lol! Somebody gave me a number for a non BYCer who had buffs and I think SS, there was somebody else in Syracuse with Australorps. But the non BYCer never called me back and Syracuse is a far trip for just the Australorps.

Anyways, we are in Pittsburgh until late Wed for my husband's sialendoscopy and I probably won't be back on BYC until we get back. I pledge to bring warm weather with me when we return!

ETA: I forgot to add that we are in Penn Yan, about 30 min south of Geneva. Both Rochester and Syracuse are a bit of a hike, but if I can get two of the breeds in one trip, it would be worth it!

No sorry not right now. Perhaps in a month or so.

Well, I annoyed some of my hens tonight by spraying bluklote on their vents. I'm going to hatch chicks for a nice man who has bought from me in the past and he wanted chicks out of specific birds so now the hens are marked. I'm wondering how often I'm going to need to reapply it before it rubs off. I'm hoping to gather enough to set them for Easter. I also blukoted one of the cochin hens so I can solve the mystery of who's laying once and for all. Not that it really matters; either way I'm setting eggs. I'll either get birds for my mille fleur project or I'll get sex links. Can't lose

You can't be serious. Is there such a thing?

It will be on their butts for a while.

Morning all. Lots of egg sounds coming from the terrorist coop this morning. They are laying well and orders are coming in from my egg customers. I do have to save some eggs for starting another hatch this week. I am expecting my second set of rir eggs tomorrow. Hopefully the post office calls early. The chicks are doing well and are so funny to watch. The sexlink roos alway run up to peck my hand when I reach in. They will probably be frozen or canned when the time comes. Ordered some leg bands for the chicks so I can keep records on my heritage rir birds. Since I will have two different lines, I will need to keep track of who I am breeding with whom. I may use zip ties when they get much older as I can use different colors to signify different things. Its a learning process. My aim is to breed true or as close to true. Still have no interest in showing.

Lynzi--I am wrestling with the same issue in my bator right now and am not sure what is going on. I have to candle the eggs my broody silkie is sitting on to see if there is any difference as the eggs are all the same age. By the way, the broody silkie is one of the pullets you are getting. I think. Have to look at her again.

Rancher--you crack me up. You need a sign or something to sell all those eggs! I hope you find homes for your hens. Mine will be finding freezer camp and glass jars when the newbies start laying.

Gramma---people might start jumping off bridges if that is the forecast!

Pyxis--good luck with that. I always end up with more of it on me than on the birds. Still working on your batch of littles.

Off to sling java today. Long days this week but gotta take the hours when I can. Later all.
Well I did talk to someone today and she'll take 2 doz a week. Her husband puts them raw in his smoothies for the added protein.

Hi all! I am new to this site, as well as to chickens. I have made the chicken coop, now I can't find the chicks! Does anyone know where I can get chicks in the Long Island area ASAP. I've called a few places and they all say May. I would like to get my chicks started under the lamp so they can go out in 6 weeks. If no places in LI, is there a website that will deliver relatively soon? Thank you!
Ron

When you guys have broodys and they are currently in the coop with others, do you leave them in there and let them hatch in the coop or do you remove them and place them away from everyone else? Last summer I ended up moving Stella when she was sitting on eggs. I'm wondering if I only have 3 birds in a coop/pen if I should let that broody be in there. Will she protect the chicks from the others or no?

If I can take more birds I'd let them hatch, but segregated is best I think. If you have enough nests and the others will leave her alone. I plan to hatch as many Marans as I can this year and sell any hens I have to cull.

My next stint with the incubator will be the last only because I'm getting Columbian rock eggs.
